To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, WILLIAM CORDWELL and DYsoN BARKER, subjects of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and residents of Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain Improvements in Cotton-Combing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to-improvements in machines for combing cotton and whilst it has particular reference to What is known as the Nasmith machine is nevertheless applicable to combing machines of other types, the object being to provide improved means for driving the detaching roller so as to accomplish the backward and forward movements of the latter in a more efficient manner.
Our invention will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which Fig. l is an end elevation of a device constructed in accordance with our invention.

ith the aforesaid objects in view our invention consists in mounting upon two studs a and 6 arranged at a little distance apart from each other and secured to the machine frame 0 two wheels 6 and f of a definite number of teeth say for instance, 20, in gear with each other, the same wheels being compounded with section or spaced wheels 9 and 72,, that is to say Wheels having only a few teeth say 7 and 3, respectively and the rest of their peripheries blank. These section wheels 9 and h are adapted to gear at the required times with another wheel 6 mounted upon a stud 9' above the studs a and 6 this third wheel having a definite number of teeth say 15. The section wheel or toothe'd segment ghas a toothless or blank portion 9 and the section wheel or toothed segment it has a blank portion if. The spaced wheels 9 and hare driven continuously through the agency of the fully toothed wheels 6, f, with which they are compounded, by another wheel is driven in any suitable manner from a convenient source, the arrangement being such that the section or spaced wheels 9 and it come alternately into and out of gear withthe wheel 71 above them so as at one time to turn said wheel a definite distance clockwise and at another time a definite distance anti-clockwise and also allow such wheel to dwell between its movements, all in accordance with the known movements of the detaching roller of the combing machine. The aforesaid arrangement of gears is generally suflicient for accomplishing the objects in wow but as there are times when both gears g and hare out of mesh with the wheel 71 1t is advisable to provide means for looking or holding such gear stationary during the dwelling periods of the detaching roller to ensure the various gears coming into mesh properly at the same point each time, so as not to disturb the sequence of known operations of the detaching roller. To this end We employ in connection with and fixed to the third wheel 73 a star-shaped wheel m cut away on its periphery at four'difl'erent points 9%. This star wheel co-acts with discs or cams a and fixed to or formed in one with the section wheels g and h. Each of the cams has its edge stepped down at g to enable the points 7' of the star wheel to pass when it and the gear wheel i are rotating. On the other hand the edge of each cam is formed with a portion 8 adjacent to the step 9 concentric to the centre of its supporting stud, such parts 8 in each case engaging the star wheel in or about the manner shown at the right hand side of Fig. 1, so as to hold said wheel from rotating during the passage of the concentric part of the cam and whilst the section teeth of the spaced wheels are out of gear with wheel 2'.
The section wheels 9 and it are continuously driven at a constant rate of speed but the Wheel 11 driven by them and likewise the star wheel m are first driven in one direction, remain stationary and are then driven in the opposite direction, the stationary periods coinciding with the stationary periods of the detaching roller of the combing machine. Motion is communicated to the detaching roller (not shown in the drawing) by a pinion t, in gear with wheel '5, fixed on shaft a which has also fixed upon it a wheel v gearing with a inion w on the shaft w of the detaching roller.
lVhat We claim as our invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent is l. A driving mechanism adapted to operate the detaching roller of a combing machine, comprising two toothed driving Wheels, intermeshing With each other, two toothed segments revolving With the respective driving Wheels a toothed driven Wheel arranged in the same plane With the said toothed segments and revolved by them intermittently first in one direction and tien in "the other direction, a star Wheel revolving with the said driven Wheel, andv two cams revolving With the respective toothed segments and operating to lock the star Wheel and driven Wheel when. the toothed segments are out of driving engagement with the said driven Wheel.
