and is supportedfrom the upperside rails 12and 18 in any convenient manner. Bearings are provided within this frame at spaced intervals to rotatably receive a series of verticallyextending shafts 48, the upper portion of each of which is provided with a gear 49 meshing with the like gears of the next adjacent shafts whereby all of the shafts are driven in unison from a gear 50 on a vertical shaft 51 which latter receives its power from any desired source. A disc 52 is eccentrically mounted on the lower end of each shaft 48 and these discs carrybrushes upon theirunderfaces which wipe the plates as they pass beneath said frame.
After being sprayed and wiped the plates are fed on through the machine by the discs 23 and rollers 21 until they arrive beneath the mechanism for coating them, which mechanism is illustrated in detail in Figures 9, 10 and 11 of the drawings.
The coating mechanism, like the acid spray and wipersv previously described, is located over one of the platform sections 20 and consists of a tubular reservoir 53 arranged transversely of the machine and supported at its ends by brackets 54 rising from the side rails 12 and 13. The lower portion of this reservoir is provided with a longitudinally extending enlargement centrally cut away to provide a longitudinal channel 55.0pening into the lower face of said enlargement. Slidable in the channel 55 is a plurality of devices 56 and these are retained in the channel by plates 57 and 58 secured to the under face of the enlargement with their inner edges underlying the lower faces of said devices. An apertured device 59 projects downward from each device 56.
Abar 60 extends transversely of the ma chine below, parallel to and lateral of the series of devices 56 and is mounted for reciprocation in bearing brackets 61 secured to the respective ends of the reservoir. Rigidly secured to this bar is a plurality of spaced pins 62 which are respectively engaged in the apertures of the devices 59.

tion with the bar 60, are movable in unison to cover or uncover a spaced series of openings 63 in the lower wall of the reservoir and in order that these openings may be uncovered and covered. at the proper times mechanism similar to that for controlling the ejection of acid from the ployed. i j r The mechanism referred toconsists of a vertically arranged lever arm 6% pivoted at its upper end to one end of the bar 60, pivoted intermediately to a'bracket 65 secured to the adjacent side rails and at its lower end engaged in abifurcated portion of a horizontallyrotatable lever 66 which is pipe 27 is em-v also pivoted at an intermediate point andhas one arm 67 thereof projecting into the path of travel of the plates to be coated. Connecting the arm 67 of lever 66 with a suitable fixed part of the machine is a contractile coil spring 68 which exerts an influence to move the parts to a position causing the devices 56 to normally maintain the openings 63 covered.
A tank 69 containing the molten coating metal or alloy is connected with the reservoir 53 by a pipe 70 and through any desired instrumentality maintains a predetermined amount of molten metal or alloy in the reservoir, and in the event the metal so contained becomes chilled or in order to pre vent it from becoming chilled, means in the nature of nozzles 71 may be provided for directing. jets of hot flame against the sides of the; reservoir to heat and maintain the metal therein at a uniform temperature.
The operation of the mechanism just described for supplying a coating of metal or alloy to the plates as they pass beneath the reservoir 53 is substantially indentical with the mode of operation-of the acid spray mechanism. During its movement through the-machine the forward edge of the plate to be coated contacts with and moves theextremity of the arm 67 of lever 66 until the devices56, uncover the openings63 permit ting the metal or alloy in the reservoir to flow throughsaid' openings and onto the plate passing therebeneath. A predetermined amount of'moveinentof the plate results in the extremity ofv arm 67 being moved out of the path of the plate after which it rides against one side'edge thereof and maintains the openings 63 uncovered until the plate has passed by when the coilspring 68 acts toreturn the parts to theirnormal position closing the openings 63 and in readiness to repeat the operation when the next plate moves in position to be coated.
Following their passage beneath the coating mechanism the plates are subjected. to a wiplng operation for uniformly spreading the coating material thereover and burnishing the, same. This wiping means is very similar tov the acid wiping means and consistsof. a rectangular frame extending'transverselyv across the machine and supported in any suitablemanner from the side railslQ and 13 above the platform sect-ions, said frame, as shown, including a pair of side bars 72 connected'at their ends by bars 73.
Carried by each .or the side rails 72 is a setof spaced bearings and rotatable in each of these bearings is a vertical shaft 7 4 which. at itsu pper end, carries a gear 75. Two separateseries'of gears and shafts are thus provided and as illustrated the several gears of'the first series as well as the several gears of the second series-intermesh. Preferably, however; there, does not exist any intermeshing relation between sthe respective series of gears, but the gears (of both series may 'be driven from a common source by a gear 7.6 on a vertiealshaft 77 .jounnaled in a bearing carried by one of the and bees $3. This igear Z6 with one of the pars 15 of each series and the shaft? canrying the same has fined to its lower end a bevel gear 78 which meshes with a similar gear 59 .on a short horizontal shaft 80 which is journailed in a bearingcanried by one of the upper side rails and at its outer end carries a sproeket 81 which may [be connected :to any desired source of power and rotation of which, as is apparent, will result in uniform rotationof all the shatts74.
A disc 82 is eccentrically mounted on the lower end of each shaft '74 and upon their lower times these discs carry brushes which wipe the upper faces of the plates as they pass beneath the rframe, ithe first series of brushes serving to wipe out the coating material to uniform vthickness and the second series serving to complete the wiping process as well .as burnish lates.
After passing heneat the wiping mechanism just described the plates are moved on byithe rollers 21 and discs 23to a'mechanism for scraping and trimming their edges. This mechanism consists of a pair of shafts 83tand 84,-the former extendingitransversely of the machine above the-plane ofithe'platform sections and the latter-eaten transversely of the machine ibelolw the p ne of the platform sections,-said shaftsbemg relatively disposed in parallelism and'preferably .in substantially relative vertical alignment. One end of one of these shafts has fixed thereon a sprocket 85 and both shafts, between the side :rails \12 and 13, have longitudinally adjustable thereon a pair of discs 86 having dine toothed peripheries or cutting edges. The discs of the two sha'its operate in pairs mud as the of the plates pass between them the teeth or cuttin edges {of the discs function to scrape n atrim the .edgesiof all surplus and inequalities in the coating material. Preferably adjustable bearings are provided 501' the shafts 83' and 8.4 sothat the distanoe between the discs 86mm be ivngied,but these hearings :may form the subject matter of a separate application and are JMOI'O not shown in detail. After passing between the edge scraping and trimmingdiscs the plates are ejectedfrom the machine lbyilthfl last-set of discs QBL nd roller 21.

Power for rotating the various shafts of the machine may be applied in-various manner, but I prefer che sprocket and chain arrangement best shown in 1 of the drawings. I his =mangement consists of a pair of spaced stub shafts 87 and *88 extending laterally 6mm -oneside ofthe frame of the machine andieaeh carrying a sprocket 89 which sprockets are connected b a chain 90. Each of these shafts in adgitiop carvies a plurality of smaller and these latter are connected by chains 91 with the several slperoclcetsfi. A second sprocket on vone of t ahadtsfl is connected by a chain 92 with the'sproclcet 85 on ofthe edge scraping and trimmin carrying shafts and all of the spr ets with'their shafts are rotated from the sha 'ft of roller 17 :by means of a chain 93 teonnectin a sprocket 94 on -this shaft with a sp ct on the stub shait 87.

3. A machine for coating sheet material comprising means for advancing the material through the machine, means including an element disposed laterally with respect to the material and actuated thereby to cause application of the coating substance thereto, said means operating automatically to cut ofi application of the coatin material following advance of the-material past said element.
4. A machine for coating metal sheets comprising means for advancing the material through the machine and relatively independent means for respectively applying a liquid flux and subsequently a h uid coating material to the sheets duringt eir advance, said means bein operable automatically bythe sheets during their advance through the machine to initiate -ap lication of the flux and coating materia and includi elements constantly tending to cut oil t e flow of the same.
5. In a machine for coating metal sheets, means foriadvancing the sheetsthrough the machine, means for supplying a liquid flux to the advancing sheets including a supply pipe having a series of longitudinally spaced openings therein, a series of members arranged in end to end abutting rela tion for controlling the flow of the liquid flux through said openings, and means operable"by the advancing sheets to at predetermined times move said members to uncover said openings.
6. In a machine for coating metal sheets, means for advancing the sheets through the machine, means for supplying a liquid flux to the advancing sheets including a supply ipe having a series of longitudinal spaced openings therein, a series of collars embracing said pipe and arranged in end to end abutting relation, and means operable by the advancing sheets to move said collars to uncover said openings, said means including a member and independent re-' movable connections between said member and each collar, whereby selected connections may be removed to render related collars inoperative to uncover predetermined openings upon operation of the member by the advancing sheets.
7. Ina machine for coating metal sheets, means for advancing the sheets through the machine, means for supplying coating material to the advancing sheets including a reservoir having a series of openings therein, a series of devices arranged in end to end relation and movable longitudinally of the reservoir for controlling the flow of coating material through said openings,

ing sheets, and independent removable connections between said member and said devices whereby selected connections may be removed to render related devices inoperative to uncover predetermined openings upon actuation of the member by advancing sheets.
8. A machine for coating metal sheets, in combination, acid spray means, means for wiping the acid over the sheets, metal spray means, means for wiping the metal over said sheets, and means including a pair of discs for scraping and trimming the edges of said sheets.
9. In a machine for coating metal sheets, a metal containing reservoir having an opening therein, a slidable device movable transversely of the machine for controlling the flow of metal from said reservoir through said opening, and means operated by a sheet positioned to receive metal from said reservoir for sliding said device.
10. In a machine for coating metal sheets, a metal containing reservoir having a plurality of openings therein, slidable devices for controlling the flow of metal from the reservoir through said openings, means for sliding said devices in unison, and means including a plurality of levers operated by "a sheet during its advance through the machine to slide said devices.
