IMPROVEMENT IN wHEEL-PLows.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,964, dated Sfptember 16, 1873; application filed April 5, 1873. f

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, TILGHMAN DARNEY TERRY, ALONZO GAsE, and CHARLES LARKIN, of Knobnoster, in the county of Johnson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sulky Cultivators and Plows, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionl thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which -form a part of this specification. l

The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a sulky cultivator and plow, as will.be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to; enable others skilledin the art to 'which our invention -appertains to make and use the same, we will now procecd'to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan View., and Fig. 2 a side elevation, of our machine. Fig. 3 is a section of a wheel used for-cutting stalks and weeds.

A represents the tongue, which extends back and has the axle B passing through it a suitable distance ,from its rear end. One end of the axle B is bent, forming a crank, a, and on the end of the same, as well as on the.

. 'other end of lthe axle, is vplaced a drivingwheel, C. The wheel -on the crank a is intended to run in the furrow, and can be raised or lowered at will by means of a lever, b, attached to the axle B, and engaging in a segment rack-bar, d', attachedA to the tongue A, and holding the axle with the crank in any position desired. D represents' a wheel to be attached, when desired, on either end of the axle for cutting stalks and weeds. This wheel has two rims, cl and c, the spokes v.being attached to the outer rim d, and this rim form-4 ing a cutter on its outer edge, while the inner' rime is simply' attached to theside ofthe outer rim and spokes', and has the cutter formed along its inner edge, as fully shown in Fig. 3. In a staple, f, attached to the tongue A, a suitable distance in fro,'nt of the axle, is pivcted a beam, Gr, which rests upon the rear end cf the tongue, and has the seat E supported thtreon. At'the outer end 0f the beam G, on

the side thereof, is pivoted another beam, G', to which the plow Hand revolving colter J are attached, the.V` front. end-of said beam G' resting upon a support, k, attached to the tongue. On the 'sideof the beam G, between it and the beam G', is pivoted a lever, J', having ra stud, i', on its'lower end, projecting inward under the beamGr.- Frein the lever J', at or near the pivot-point,- projects an arm, h, forward' at 'right angles, said arm being, at its outer end, provided with an outward-projecting 'stadje'. fThe. studs z' and i' may be provided withyfrictionf'rollers, if so desired. @By means of the lever J'a-nd its arm h, the plow is raised out of the ground, when so desired, -in-ft-he follwingfmannerz The stpd i', the lever'bein'g pulled backward, iirst strikes the `underside of the beam fG', raising its front en'dzso as to lift the point of the plow first. Then the stud i' runs up the inclined rear end of the tongue A, raising the rear ends vof both beams Gr and G1, and thereby lifting" the heel of thefplow also. The upward movement of the beam G is limited by a band or sta'ple, f', surrounding the same and attached to the tongue. Three horses are intended to v be'used with this plow, two on the right and one on the left side' ofthe tongue A, thus bringing the greatest -amount of; force onjthej.,l same sideof .the machine as thevplow. 'On-@ the tongue A is secured arbox, pt ,v-tnrbighf i, the front end of which passes the double-tree K, the same being pivoted by a bolt, n, passing through an oblong slot in the box m, allowing the double-tree to move backward and forward to the extent of said slot. The bolt ln'also passes through and pivots one-'end of an equalizing-bar, L, which is placed on top of the double-tree and Aextends to the right' side. M' M M are three single-trees, attached' one to eachend of the double-tree and one to the outerV end of the equalizing-bar L. In the center of the double-tree is attached a frame or box, s., having a roller, y, and in the rear end of the box m is another roller, z. A

chain, fr, is attached to the box m, passes around the lrollers y and z, as shown iniFig. 1, and then attached to the outer 'end of the equalizing-bar L. By this means the draft of the three horses is perfectly equal ized, and the plow moved steadily without Y jerking to either side, and therefore making a straight and even furrow. v

Having thus fully described our invention,

4what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

.Y 1. The combination, with the tongue A, axle B, and wheels G C, of theybar Gr, hinged atits front end to the tongue and supporting the seat E, and the bar G pivoted to the rear end of the bar G, and having the plow H and colter J attached to it, all substantially asherein set forth. l f
