Description

I E. REEVES. VACUUM CLEANER. APPLICATION H'LED APR- 15, 1920.
Patl ltdSept. 19,1922.
EDWIN A. REEVES, OF MILFORD, CONNECTICUT.
VACUUM CLEANER.
Application filed April 15, 1920. Serial No. 374,114.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, EDWIN A. Bnnvns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milford, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Vac uum Cleaners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to new and improved vacuum cleaners of the manually operated type, and has for its object among other things, to provide a rigid, economical and eiiicient means for separably securing the several parts together, more especially the dust bag to the cylinder.
To these and other ends, my invention consists in the vacuum cleaner having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, towhich reference is hereby made, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improvedvacuum cleaner complete and,
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional View of a portion thereof, taken upon line 2-2 of Figure 1.
I have only shown such details of this vacuum cleaner, which is of the same type that set forth in United States Letters Patent No. 1,0923%173 issued to me April 1 1, 191 i, as are necessary for an understanding of the present invention.
The vacuum cleaner as herein shown consists primarily of a vacuum cylinder 10, and a piston cylinder 11, which are separably secured together. The latter cylinder is closed at its open end by a cylindrical head 12, and mounted therein is a piston that is manually operated by a handle 13. The lower end of the vacuum cylinder 10 is provided with an inwardly turned flange 14, and provided with a plurality of threads or ci'nrugation 15 adjacent thereto. The couical head 16, to which is secured the nozzle tube 17 having a nozzle 18 upon the end thereof, is provided with a flange 19 substantially at right angles to the axis thereof, and a flange 20 adjacent thereto parallel to the axis, which latter flange is provided with threads or corrugation similar to those in the end of the cylinder 10 whereby their engagement provides means for separably securing the head 16 to the vacuum cylinder 10.
lVithin the vacuum cylinder 10 is the dust bag 21, which is closed at its upper end 22', and at its open end is secured to a sleeve 23, having an angular flange 24: thereon, which projects radially outward, from the body of said sleeve, and lies between the flanges 14 and 19 when the parts are secured together, as shown in Figure 2. The unscrewing of the head 16 from the cylinder 10 releases at the same time the dust bag 21 for removal from the vacuumcylinder 10.
Minor changes and alterations may be made within my invention, and I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but claim all that falls fairly within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A vacuum cleaner, composed of a cylindrical receptacle having an internally projecting flange at one end with an opening theretln'ough and exteriorly threaded adjacent to said flange, a nozzle tube, a head having a conical portion secured to said nozzle tube, a cylindrical portion, with an open end interiorly threaded, for engagement with the threads upon said receptacle, a flange portion between said conical portion and said cylindrical portion and at substantially a right angle thereto, a cylindrical sleeve the body of which projects into said receptacle through the aforesaid opening of the flange of the cylindrical receptacle, and having an outwardly projecting flange at one end that is held between the receptacle fiai'ige and the flange on said conical head when the parts are all. assembled and entirely enclosed and substantially air tight without the use of packing, and a cloth dust bag stretched over said sleeve and thereby held in frictional engagement therewith.
In testimony whereof,-I have hereunto affixed my signature.
EDWIN A. REEVES.
