To all whom it may concern;- i f a; 1 Be it known that I, JOHN Burma-citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and. State-of Massachusetts, have invented a newand-us'eful- Adjustable Plug Gauge, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to'a'n adjustable plug gauge, particularly adapted for sizing holes 1n rotating work. It iscustomary to use a solid steel gauge for-such operations, all parts of which are of fixed-diameter. Sometimes these gauges are'made of two diameters representingthe over and under limits of size, which gauges are commonly called"go"and no go gauges.
It is the general'object of my invention to provide an improved gauge of the latter type, which shall not only "have; portions representing the fixed'over and under llmits,
but also an interposed adjustable portion-by which any desired diameter "betweenthe limits may be indicated." My invention further relates to; arrangements and eombinationsiof parts --which "will be hereinafter described and more-particw, larly pointed out in the appended claims;
" preferredfform [of my invention is shown in the drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a side-view, of my-im bv -d gauge shown in Fig.1
Fig. 3 is an end'viewilooking',inthe idi- 1 I 7 taken along the line 4- 1 in Fi'gJ2.
Referring to the drawings, my improved gauge comprises a shaft 10' having a'threaded portion 11, a cylindrical'portion1112;*a conical portion 13, and an outerthreaded end portion 14 A handle 15'is' 'secure'd to the shaft 10 by a taper'pin -16, orin' any other convenient manner. Ahead 17, having a general cylindrical shape, isfirmly seated on the conical portion 13 of the shaft 10, being secured thereon by a key 18, and
a binding nut 19.
The head 17 is provided with a plurality of inclined dove-tailed guide-ways 20 in which tapered gauge bars 21 of dove-tailed cross section are slidably mounted. A
flanged sleeve 22 is slidable on the cylin' drical portion 12 of'the shaft 10, and may advantages andfu's thereof. 51 The gauge bars21- ay be adjilStd rela- 'tively to-thehead l7 bylooseningjthe lock V auras and by moving thecol'lai 23*andfthe 24, to which. a spanner wrenchjmayjbe apg I 'A HaHged meinber-"QS' oniithe 60.

are of course subject to rather'-' rapid wear,
Which may, however, be easily taken care of by supplying a new flanged member and by adjusting the bars 21 as often as may be necessary. The wear on the flanged sleeve 22 is or should be very slight. The parts 21, 22 and 25 are made to interchangeable standards and these parts may any of them be readily replaced if worn.
The handle or sleeve 15 may be removed from the shaft 10'b'y driving out the pin 16, Such removal permits the sleeve 22 to be re moved and replaced if desired, The'hole in the handle 15 is of advantage in preventing rotation of the handle when loosening the lock nut28 or the member 25.
invention as set forth in the claims, and I do not wishto be otherwise limitedto the details herein dis'closed, but what I claim is 1; An adjustable plug gauge, having, in combination, asupport, separated gauge members mounted .thereon, and of different fixed sizes, a-plurality of gauge bars bars positioned between said gauge members,
and means to adjust said bars simultaneously radially of the axis of said shaft.
3. An adjustable plug gauge, having, in combination, a shaft, a head fixed to said shaft and having dove-tailed grooves therein inclined toward the axis of said shaft, a plurality of dove-tailed gauge bars relatively slidablein said grooves, a pair ofgauge members onsaid shaft, engaging the ends of said bars to longitudinally position said bars relative to said head, and means to change the axial positionof said members relative to said shaft and head, thereby adjusting said bars in said head.
4:; An adjustable plug gauge having, in combination, ashaft, a gauge member mounted on said shaft and of a determined size, a second gauge member mounted on the s end of said shaft and of a determined but smaller size,-a plurality of adjustable gauge bars positionedbetween said members, and
a shaft, having,
means to adjust said bars radially to sizes between the sizes of said two members.
5. An adjustable plug gauge comprising intermediate and end threaded portions, a plurality of gauge bars, a head fixed to said shaft and having tapered guide-ways for said gauge bars, said head having a cylindrical recess therein, a member threaded on said shaft and having a projection fitting said recess, a lock nut for said member, a sleeve slidable on said intermediate portion, said member and said sleeve positioning said bars longitudinally relatively tozsaid shaft, and a collar threaded'on said intermediate portion and effective to move said sleeveaxially. v
f 6. An adjustable plug gauge, having in combination, a shaft having separated threaded portions including an end portion and having also an interposed cylindrical portion, a head fixed to said shaft adjacent said cylindrical portion, a plurality of gauge bars supported by said head, and means to adjust said bars axially on said head, said means including a flanged sleeve fitting said cylindrical vportion of said shaft and having an external gauging surface, an adjusting collar therefor threaded to said shaft, and a flanged member mounted on the threaded end portion of said shaft and having a bearing in said head, said member also having an external gauging surface of relatively smaller diameter.
7. An adjustable plug gauge having, in combination, a plurality of gauging members,a' shaft having an intermediate threaded portion, means fixed on said shaft for supporting said gauging members thereon,
and means to adjust said members, said latter means including a collar threaded on said intermediate portion of said shaft, and
a handle sleeve removably fixed to said shaft andnormally preventing removal of said collar from said shaft.
M 8. In anadjustable gauge, a supporting shaft havingaconic'al intermediate portion, a head seated on said conical portion, means to hold said head from angular or axial vmovement on said shaft, a plurality of gauge .bars 'slidably' mounted in said head, and means to move said bars axially relatively to said shaft. In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my. signature.
