Description

N. A. HELSLEY. RECORUI'IOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 3l I922.
Patented Sept. i2, 1922.,
Patent-ed Sept. I2,
NIMROD A. HELSLEY, OF GRAFTON, WEST' VIRGINIA.
RECORD Application filed April 3,
10 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Nririaon A. HnLsLnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grafton, in the county of Taylor' and State of Vest virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ilecord Holders. of which the following` is a full, clear, and exact description. i
My invention relates to improvements in record holders of the disc type, and has for its object to provide means whereby the records may be stored in a compact manner so as to take up as little space as possible and yet be easily accessible so that any desired record may be extracted for the purpose of sale or for use on a phonograph.
Another object of the invention is the pro'- vision of a holder which may be partly withdrawn from the inclosing case in order to display the title.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description when takenin connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figurel is a perspective view of two of the holders and the base member therefor'.
Figure 2 is a vertical section through a holder and a portion of the base member, and
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the holder, parts being broken away.
Referring to the drawing more in detail, the numeral l designates a base member provided with a plurality of paralleled dovetailed grooves 2 which receive the dovetails formed on the record carriages later to be described. The rear ends of the grooves are closed by means of rubber bumpers or the like 3 which absorb the shock when the carriage is returned into the case. This vbase member l. may be the floor of a phonograph cabinet compartment or a shelf or compartment in a store in which records arc kept for sale.
The record carriage proper consists of a substantially semi-'circular member a which is provided with a lined groove or channel This semicircular member is positioned with its terminals in substantially vertical alignment and has extending tangentially therefrom at its lower terminal a projection 6. The projection 6 may be formed as an integral part of the semi-circular member or may be made as a separate part and secured thereto in any well known manner. A dovetail 7 is provided on the lower side of HOLDER.
*1922. serial No. 549,031.
the projection G and is slidably positioned lion the dovetail groove 2 of the base memer l. Y
n Pivoted tothe'semicircularmember 4 at its lower terminal is an arc-shaped member S, which is also providedwith a llined groove 9. The hinge between the members t and 8 is of the ordinary type and provides shoulders which limit the upward movement of the member '8 to the position shown in lfull lines in Figures land 3. l In this position of the member 8 it forms a continuation of the curve of the semicircular member 4. A coil spring 10 has its terminals abutting against the top of projection 6 andthe bottom of thel arc-shaped member 8 and thereby normally holds the latter at the upper limit of its movement. A knob 11 is attached to the projection 6 for the purpose of operating the carriage o n the base member l.
In operation the carriage is drawn forward over the base member 1 to the extent permitted by the dovetail groove 2, and in this position of the carriage the record is presented to the operator in such manner that the same may be readily extracted from the cabinet or other container. In withdrawingy the record from the carriage the. latter is expanded by pressure of the edge of the `record on the arc-shaped member 8 which is moved on its pivot against the pressure of the spring 10. T o replace a record in the cabinet it is only necessary to force the record into the carriage against the pressure of spring 10 and return the carriage to its retracted position in the cabinet.
In accordaucewith the patent statutes. I have described what I now believe to be the best embodiment of the invention, but I do not wish to be understood thereby as limiting myself or the scope of the invention, as many changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention; all such I aim to include in the scope of the appended claims.
`What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: l. In a device of the class described, Vai horizontally extending base member, and a plurality of individual record holders each independently and slidably mounted on said base member, each holder comprising two relatively movable parts.
2. In a device of the class described, a horizontally extending base member, a plurality of individual record holders each independently and slidably mounted thereon, each holder comprising two members pivoted together, and means for normally urging,` one of said members toward the other.
3. In a device of the class described, 'ahorizontally extending base member, a record holder slidably mounted thereon, said holder including a substantially semicircular A record holder including a Substau tially semicircular carriage and arc-shaped member pivoted to one end of the semicircular carriage, and resilient means for normally urging 'the arc-shaped member lo Ward the carriage.
6. A record holder includingj` a substantially semicircular carriage, a projection on said carriage extending tangentially therefrom, an arc-shaped member pivoted to said carriage, and means positioned between the projection and arc-shaped member for non mally urging the latte-r toward the carriage.
7. A. record holder including;- a. substair tially semicircular carriage, a projection on said carriage, an arc-shaped member pivotally attached to one end of the carriage7 and a resilient member positioned between the projection and arc-shaped member.
