To all whom# may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR BoLLiNoKx, a subject of the King of the Belgians, residing at Brussels, Belgium, 1 Place Stephanie, have invented' a certain Improved Pump of Variable Capacity, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a rotary pump of variable capacity or output of which the capacity may be modified in a continuous manner and without stopping the pump by altering the position of an adjustable organ, the main objects of said invention being to produce an imiproved construction of rotary pump of said type which will be strong and economical yand more efficient and generally advantageous in operation than those constructed hitherto, and wherein the frictional and other resistances, so important in an engine of this category, will be reduced to a practically negligible minimum. j
Vith these objects in view the pump according tothe present invention comprises a casing through which passes a driving shaft to which a movement of rotation is imparted by any suitable gearing or other means. On this shaft and inside the aforesaid casing are keyed or otherwise mounted so as to be rotated by the shaft while being able to move longitudinally thereon, two bodies in each of which is arranged a certain number of cylinders. in the said cylinders are lodged pistons, the single pistons of two opposed cylinders being connected by means of a rod to form integral double The bodies containing the cylinders bein rotated by the shaft, the pistons are there ore alsocaused to effect a movement of translation about the longitudinal axis of the rotary shaft passing through the casing of the pump. rlhe pistons also have a rectilinear reciprocatory movement in the cylinders owing to the contact during their movement of translation of skates or friction-blocks with which the said pistons are rovided with the faces of a stationary but adjustable flat ring inclined in relation to the axis of translation of the pistons, the adjustment of this inclination of the flat ring being obtained by 'causing same to pivot about an axis passing through the centre of the axis of translation of the pistons and at right angles thereto. A suitable device is provided to allow the adjustment of the degree of inclination of the flat ring,

and consequentlyto vary the stroke of the pistons and thus to modify the capacity of the pump. It will indeed be understood that by inclining the flat ring more or less the capacity or output of the pump may be rendered smaller or larger or .even suppressed when the fiat ring will have been placed iii a plane at right angles to the axis of translation of the cylinders, as in the latter position the stroke of the pistons caused by the contact of their skates with the faces of the Hat ring during their translation will be nil. lf after having placed the fiat ring in a plane at right angles to the axis of translation of the cylinders, the said ring is moved further, that is to say if it is inclined in a reverse direction, the pump will also deliver in the reverse direction.
The movement or the stroke of the pistons in the cylinders causes the suction and the expulsion of the liquid to be pumped, while the movement of the cylinders caused by the rotation of the bodies which contains theni controls the distribution of the inlet and of the outlet of the liquid, the rotation of the cylinders resulting in causing their opposed ends corresponding to the ends of the casing of the pump to register successively with lateral apertures formed in the walls corresponding to the inside of the pump of distribution chambers contained in the lids or covers fixed on the two ends of the pump, so as to establish a communication between the said ends of the c linders and the said chambers formed in t e covers of the ends of the casing for the suction and the expulsion of the iiquidto be pumped.
ln order that the present invention may be clearly understood, an embodiment of saine is illustrated by the accompanying drawings in which:

Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line A-B of Fig. 1, the adjustable flat ringbeing shown in the posit-ion in which it is in a plane at right angles to the axis of translation of the cylinders.

. As may be seen from the drawings A(see particularly Fig. l) the pump comprises a.
casing 1 through which passes longitudinally a rotary shaft 2 rotated in any suitable manner, for instance by means of a pulley, of spur or bevel gearing of a motor, or the like. On the rotary shaft 2 and inside the casing 1 are keyed as at 3 or mounted in any other suitable manner so as to be rot-ated by the shaft while beingable to move longitudinally along the latter, rotating bodies 4 and 5, one adjacent each end of the casing. In each of the bodies 4 and 5 are provided any desired number, even or odd, of cylinders 6 and 7 respectively vin which are lodged pistons able to move therein, the pistons 8 and 9 of each pair formed by the pistons of two opposed cylinders 6 and 7 respectively being connected by means of a rod 10 and being therefore solid or integral with each other.
A flat ring 11, of which the inner diameter is sufliciently large to allow the rods 10 to pass therethrough and to rotate therein about the longitudinal axis of the 'shaft 2, and which may be inclined Within the casing 1 between the rotating bodies 4 and 5 in relation to the said longitudinal axis of the rotary shaft 2 by causing the said ring to pivot about trunnions 12 (see Fig. 2) maintained in bearings 13 of the casing 1 and of which the axis passes through the centre of the shaft 2 and at right angles thereto, causes a reciprocatory movement of the pistons 8 and 9 in the cylinders 6 and 7 owing to the fact that during their movement of translation about the longitudinal axis of the shaft 2, skates or friction blocks 14 with which said pistons are provided are in contact with the faces of the flat ring 11 and have consequently to follow the inclination of the plane of the said faces during the translation of the pistons. In order to allow the skates 14 to take a position in accordance with the inclination of the flat ring 11 they take the shape of spherical .caps andare maintained in suitable spherical bearings 15 provided at-the end of Shanks 17 secured in the pistons 8 and 9, the skates 14 being moreover provided with central holes 16 for lubrication purposes. In order to allow the adjustment of .the distance existing between them as the skates 14 wear, the shanks 17 in the pistons 8 and 9 have their ends opposed to the bearings 15 provided with a screw thread 18 and screwed in a threaded portion of a central bore of the said pistons in which locking plugs 19 are also screwed to immobilize or lock the shanks 17 after adjustment.
The' adjustment of the position of the Hat ring 11 may be obtained by any suitable Ameans, but by way of example a suitable device is show n in the embodiment illustrated. l The said device comprises a threaded sleeve 20 secured pivotally at 21 to lugs 22 provided on the flat ring 11.. In the sleeve 20 is screwed a rod 23 suitably threaded on a portion of its length at one end and outer-end of the rod 23 is also provided` with a boss-extension forming a spherical seat 26 adapted on a correspondingly shaped portion of the outer-wall of the cover 32, in order to allow the inclination of the rod 23 rendered necessary by the movement of the flatv rin 11. Indeed, during the said movement,t ie point 21 (Fig. 1) describes a 'curve about the center of the trunnions 12 (Fig. 3) which renders necessary a slight inclination of the rod 23. The suction and the ex.- pulsion of the liquid in and from the cylinders 6 and 7 is effected by means of distribution chambers 27 28 and 2 9, 30 (see Fig. provided respectively in each of the two lids or covers 31 and 32 closing the ends of the casing 1 of the pump, the said chambers being each provided with a 'lateral aperture 33 on the side adjacent the ends of the cylinders 6 and 7, and the latter being thus put in communication with the chambers 28, 27 and 29, 30 when, owing to their'rotation, they register successively with the apertures 33.
, As may be seen from Fig. 4, the portionof the casing 1 adjacent the cover 31 is cylindrical, but the other portion, adjacent'the cover 32, is provided with three longitudinal inner grooves extendin from the centre of the casing 1 and of which one serves to enclose the sleeve 20 and the rod 23, and the two others 35 serve to allow the introduction and the removal of the flat ring 11 with 4 its trunnions 12.
The pump forming the subject matter of the present invention is of superior eiciency and of strong and economical construction, and it is moreover to be observed that in this pump the flat adjustable ring, being subjected to the thrust of the pistons on itstwo opposed faces, is balanced on its trunnions, and the power required to move same is thus extremely reduced, which is a very important point to allow a quick adjustment.
It must be expressly understood that the invention is not restricted to the details of construction and the particular arrangement of parts illustrated by the accompanying drawings, and that the said details and particular arrangement may vary without the principle or scope of the invention being affected thereby.
I claim 1. In a rotary pump of the type compristeasers ing a casing with end-covers having distribution chambers formed therein? an an nnlar series of double pistons slida-bly' mounted in two opposed annular series oi cylinders formed in a pair of rotary bodies havingtheir opposed ends adjacent the end covers of the casing, lateral apertures in the wall oi' the distribution chambers adjacent the rotary-bodies, and means for causing the pistons to be induenced during rotation of said bodies by inclined guiding surfaces in such a manner as to be reciprocated within their cylinders, the combination ot: guiding surfaces constituted by the fla-t annular faces of a stationary adjnstably in-1 clined solid guide-ring having a diametral axis situated centrally between the adjacent end faces or" the rotary bodies, handoperated means for effecting the adjustment of said ring, double pistons having the ends ot the single pistons facing respectively each of the two annular Jfaces of the stationary guide-ring provided with self-adjusting friction-blocks in direct rictional Contact with said annular aces,' Said blocks haw ing the shape of spherical caps fitting a correspondingly-shaped adjustable portion of the pistons, substantially as described.
2. ln a rotary pump of the type compris= ing a casing with end-covers having distribution chambers formed therein9 an annular series of double pistons slidably mounted in two opposed annular series of cylinders formed in a pair of rotary bodies having their opposed ends adjacent the end-covers of the casing, lateral apertures in the wall of the distribution chambers adjacent the rotary-bodies, and means for causing the pistons to be influenced during rotation of said bodies by inclined guiding surfaces in such a manner as to be reciprocated within their cylinders, the combination of: double-pistons with each piston having an axial shank adjustably secured therein, an independent stationary fiat-faced guide-ring adjustably supported in two points on a diametral axis passing centrally between the adjacent endi'aces of the rotary bodies, hollow spherical bearing-cups formed in the ends of aforesaid axial Shanks facing the stationary guidering, semi-spherical friction blocks fitting said bearing-cups and in direct frictional Contact with the annular faces ot said stationary guide-ring, and hand-operated means for effecting the adjustment of such ring, substantially as described.
