The cap or head 20 is made removable so that the same can be readily replaced when the occasions of practice may se necessitate and particularly when the Saine has become unduly worn. The upper end of the plate or head 20 is provided with the Vshape notch 22 which is in direct alignment with the notch 15 and Channel 18, hereinbefore referred t0.
The upper end portion of the table T or that end portion remote from the carriage 8 is provided with a transversely disposed slot 23 through Which is disposed a threaded shank 24 depending from an upstanding post 25, and coacting with the shank 24 is a clamping nut 26 whereby the post 25 may be readily adjusted in a direction transverse of the table T and efiectively maintained in its desired adjusted position. The upper portion of the post 25 is provided with an enlargement or head 27 through which is slidably disposed a spindle center 28. The conter 28 is adjustable longitudinally on the post or stud 25 and is held in dcsired adjusted position by the binding screw 29 in thraded engagement with the head or enlargement 27 and engageable with the center 28. In practice, the notches 15 and 22 and channel 18 must be in alignment and also in alignment with the working end or point of the spindle 28 and in orderto obtain. this arrangement, it is of utmost importance to provide the upper face of the table T with the guide marks 30 so that it may be readily determined the degree or extent to Which the spindle is out of align ment. The upper portion of the table T and at the side thereof adjacent to the anvil A is provided with an upstanding fiange 31 with the upper marginal portion of which is integrally formed a laterally extending supplemental table S. E denotes a straight edge having a marginal portion imposed upon the table S and the oppositeend portions of said straight edge are provided with the outstanding arms 32. The straight edge "E serves as a rest or support for the digit of a hand, preferably the thumb, of an operator for a purpose to be hereinafter more particularly referred to. Each of the arms 32 adjacent its junction with the straight edge E is provided With a slot 33 through which isdireoted a binding screw 34 also disposed through the adjacent end portion of the table S. By this arrangement, the Straight edge may be laterally adjusted in accordance with the requirements of practice and particularly with respect to the spindle with Which said straight edge coactS. The opposite end portions of the supplemental table S inwardly of 'but in close proximity to the arms 32 are provided with the graduations or indicating marks 35 whereby the requisite adjustment of the straight edge may be effected in accordance with the requirements of practice. The working margin of the straight edge is adapted to be disposed on the incline in conformity with the taper of the spindle.
To further facilitate the desired adjusting movement of the straightedge E, the out-cr extremities of the arms 32 are provided with the depending wings or luge 36 through each of.which is disposed a shank 37 in threaded engagement with a lug or Wing 38 'depending from the supplemental table S. The outer end of the shank 37 is provided with an operating head 39 which engages the outer face of the coacting wing or lug 36. The lug 36 is constantly urged toward said head 39 by an expansible member 40, herein disclosed as a coil spring encircling the shank 37 and interposed between the luge or wings 36 and 38. In practice, the operator, preferably sitting in front of the device, places the spindle Y, after first coating the same with lamp black or other kindred adhesive powder, with the Whirl or base end portion engaged within the notches 15 and 22 with the top of the spindle Y pointing 'closely to the point or working end of the spindle. center 28 and Which center, as hereinbef0re stated, must be adjusted into perfect alignment with said bearing notches 15 and 22. The straight edge E is the adjusted with respect to the applied spindle Y at proper distance therefrein andin conformity to the taper of the Spindle. The spindle Y is 'tlien mannally r0tated and While performing this operatien, the operator places a digit of a hand, preferably the thumb, upon the onter edge of the straight edge E adjacent to the applied spindle Y and in such a 'manner that as the spindle Y is rotated, the thn1nb or other digit of the operator marks or indicates the uneven portions of the spindle Y by scraping off the lamp black or the like therefron1. TheSe marks are innnediately nSd by the operator in straightening out the spindle upon the anvil A and preierably with a composition hammer 01: soit material. After repeating the foregoing operation several timcs and until the operator belieVes lie has sufficiently straightened the spindleY, he removes all of the lanip black 01' the like from the spindle and snbjects said spindle t0 a visnal test and clr 1ring Wl1iCli test, the spindle Y is rotated at a relatively hight rate of speed.
The end portion of the anvil A remote from the arm 2 is provided with an ontstandin late or a.r1n 41. En9:a ed With the arm ll is a spindle base and bolster 4-2,the lower -prtion'of which being disposed throngh a suitble oPening 43 intheplate 41 and with the lowerportion of which coactsa clamping nnt 44. The Spindle Y is rotatably engager]. With said base and bolster 42 when snbjected to the visnal test.
Depending from a side margin o:E the arm '01 plate 41 is a. plate or flange 45, Hingedly co1incted, as at 46, with the lower marginal portion of the plate or fiange 45 is the lower marginal portion of a plate 4t7 adapted to ce moved in a direction toward or from the plate Or flange 45. In order to efi'cct l'iis movement of the plate 457, the saine is pro- Vided ata ;nitable point along a, side thereof with an ontstanding lever 48. The lever is provided witli an inwardly directed fin ger or rod 49 terminatingg in a laterally di posed extension or lng 50 which overlies the face of the plate or flange and Wth Which said lng or extension 50 contacts to limit the extent of movement ofthe plate 47 away from the plate or fiange 45.-
Suitably secnred to the onter side face of theplate 47 is a motor M, pref:crably electrio, and which has its rotating armature revolving about a vertically disposed axis. Operatively engaged with the armature of the motor is a friction wheel 51, adaptcd t0 engage the whirl of the spindle wl1en said spindle is applied to the base or bolster (l2, saicl friction wheel being of such diameter with respect to the whirl of the spindle to cause said spindle to rotate at a relatively high speed. VVith the spindle applicd to said base and bolster 42 and rotating through the instrumentality of the wheel 51 the operator can urther determine or test the spindleor its aCcuracy and smoothntss by visnal inspection and also bythe application of his fingerS to the spindle.
Normally the plate 47 is at its limitcd niovenient away rO1n the flange or plate l: se thatthe rrheel 51 Will be free of the Wliii'l o tf the spindlc when first applied to the base and bolSter 4:2. 'll1c weight of the inotor' M and the parts carried tliereby serves to mai tain this normal position of the plate 47. When it is desired to rotate a spindlc applied to thebase and bolster '42, the opcrator en- ;gages the lever 4L8 and swings the plate "7 in a direction t'oward the plate or fiange 45 snfliciently to cause the whcel 51 to engage the whirl of the spindle. By this me it will at once be obvions tl1at therotatin et a spindle when applied to the base and bolster is at the nill o:t the operator.
In the straightening of spindlcs nsed in connection with the manufacture of finer yarns, it is essential that the smaller or liner nneven or crooked 'eatnres et the spindles be detcrmined with extreme accuracy and for such pnrposes, I find it of importance to employ the arrangement or construction particnlarly illnstrated in Figures 7 to 9. \Vhen this latter arrangenientor constrno tion is e1nploycd, the straight edge E and the parts for adjnsting it are removed rOm the snpplcmental table and the elongated rods R and 1nounted npon said table. The opposite end portions et the rod arepro vided with lateral extensions 52 which are directed throngh the slots in the opposite end portions of the table 8 with the rod R substantially in contact with the table 8 thronghont its length. Engaged witlr the extensions 52 are the clamping nnts 55: C0
acting with the nnder :ia ce et the table 8 and wherby the rod .l Q may be maintaihed in desired lateral ad;gnstn1ent as may be occas1oned by the taper of the spindle and which adjnstment is acilitated by the gradw ations or marks 35, lrereinbefore referred tu Thc rod B is also provided at itsopposite end portions with the latcrally en l(llllg fin gers or extensions disposed throngg;h the additional slots 56 in the table 5 and ivhich rod B is clziniped in the des 7ed adjnstment thronglithe medinm of the nuls 57. As is clearly illnstrated in the accompaning drawings. it is to be noted that the rod R,
when applied, is positioned above and spaced from the table T and the rod R.
Slidaloly monnted upon the rod B is a plnrality ozt carriers or supports K for the fingers. Each of the carriers or supports K comprises a fiat elongated body portion 58 having its longitudinal marginal portions provided with depending side fianges or wings 59. The flanges or wings 59 are provided with the transversely aligned openings 60 throngh which the rod B is loosely directed so that the carrier or support K may be readily moved or adjusted longitudinafly of said rod. The outer or rear edges of the fianges or wings are substantially perpea dioularly related to the body portion 58 and the free longitudinal edges of said wings or flanges 59. These rear edges a have contact With the rod R whereby the proper 1nounting of carrier or support in Working position is assured. in order to accomplish this (:0- action, it is to be understood that the rod B is positioned inwardly 03? the rod R.
'lhe outer or Workin extremity of the body portion 58 of the carrier or support K l1as disposed therethrough a binding screw 6l which is also directed through a longitudinalb d sposed slot provided in the rear end portion oi a fiat finger 62 partially underlying the forward part o' the body portion 58. By this means, the finger 62 may be longitndinally adjusted with respect to the spindle as the occasions of practice may necessitate.
The finge1s 62 ot' the carriers or supports K, in praotice, take the place 01 the digit of the op rater and also supplant the use of the straight edge E. After the lingers 62 have been properly adjusted with respect to the carriers or supports K, the spindle alter being applied, as hereinbefore stated, is manually rotatcd and the outer or WOIking end et the spindle scrapes the la1np black or the lilze from the spindle t0 mark or indicate the portions of the spindle to be straiglfiened. lt is also to be understood that the carriers or supports K may be adjusted to the 1equisite positions longitudinally of the spindle at Will of the operator.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obv1ous that a gauge constructed in accordance With 1ny invention is parth:uiariy well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and acility with Which it may be assembled and operated, and it Will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible et some change and modification :ithout departing from the principles and spirit thereot, and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the se eral parts herein shown in oarrying out my invention in praetice except as hereina1ter claimed.
