UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MOFFET, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN COCKS FOR DRAWING BEER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,860, dated September 16,1873; application filed July 5, 1873.
riod of time, and where it is important to prevent the escape of the gases.
The invention will first be fully described, and then clearly pointed out in the claim.
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a barrel with my improved cock. Fig. 2 is a top view of a section of the barrel. Fig.
3 is a horizontal section of Fig. l on the line a m. Fig. 4. is a section on the line 3 y, and
Fig. 5 is partly a side elevation and partly a sectional elevation of the key used for turning the'cocks.
A is the head of the barrel, and B the drawing-cock. This cock is fitted into the head from the inside, and the plug 0 is fitted in the inside extension. The outside extension is shorter than the chine of the barrel, so that it is not subject to injury, and does not require to be taken out when the barrel is empty, but it may be, if desired. D is the ventilatingcock. It is fitted in the side E of the barrel directly over the drawing-cock, with its plug F also inside of the barrel. G is a vent-passage through the cock, and H a correspond ing passage through the plug. I is an extension of the plug out through the cock, for the application of a wrench, J, for turning the plugs. K is a rod connecting the two plugs, for turning one by the other. Said rod is capable of a slight endwise motion in the plug 0, and a spring, L, is arranged with it and said plug to keep both plugs tight on their seats.
It will be seen that by turning the plugs one way to open cockB the ventilating-passages G H will be brought into line, so as to admit the air; but by turning them the other way these passages will remain closed while the drawing-cock is opened, so that the ventilating-passages may be opened or not, at will.
The full barrels of beer generally contain more or less gas, which will for a time escape, and carry with it some of the beer and foam if the ventilating-passages are open; but when the beer is partly drawn, and the pressure of the gas destroyed by its expansion, it becomes necessary to admit the air; therefore, I have contrived this arrangement, which, it will be seen, is alike applicable to both functions with out change or adjustment.
It is quite necessary to use ventilating-cocks of some kind, particularly for beer, for, if exposed to the air as much as it necessarily is by the common practice of opening the bung to facilitate the drawing, it becomes fiat and insipid to the taste very soon; hence it is important to obtain the simplest and most efficient means of ventilating sufficiently for drawing, and only while drawing.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The combination, with cocks and valve-plu gs B O and D F, of an intermediate rod, K, having play in one of the plugs O, and provided with a spring, L, that tends to raise the said rod out of said plug, thereby holding both valve-plugs securely in their seats.
JOHN MOFFET.
