ADJUSTABLE :r Ao
Application filed Apri1 17,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER C. Drums, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmette, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Jacks, of
which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had j to the accompanying drawings,' forming a' part of this specification.
My invention relates to electrical connec tors, and-more particularly to an adjustable jack which is adapted to receive plugs of various lengths.
It is a purpose of'the invention to provide a jack which is adjustable longitudinally of its support so that the spring contact member thereof is moved toward and away from the socket portion of the jack, thus making it possible to adjust the jack for plug members of various styles, lengths and contours. Any form of adjustment between the supporting or base member and the conducting member or members may be provided, but preferably a pin and slot connection is used, such as is shown in the drawings.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the description of the accompanying drawings proceeds. However, I desire to have it distinctly understood that I do not intend tolimit myself to the exact details shown or described, but that I intend to include as part of my invention all such obvious changes and modifications of parts as would occur to a person skilled in this art and as would fall Within the scope of the claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation showing my improved jack and a plug associated therewith;
Fig. 2 is an end view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary bottom plan view thereof; and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view taken through the supporting members for the conductors showing the manner of insulating the same from each other and from the base.
Referring in detail to the drawings, in Fig. 1 is shown a plug member 10 having an outer contact 11 and an inner contact 12 which is adapted to cooperate with a jack having a supporting or base member 13 provided with an upwardly extending portion i922. sefi'ai in 553,695.
14 which is provided with prong or other fastening means 15 for securing, the same in position The member 14 is provided with a socket member 16 which is provided with a head 17 having flat faces by means of which the same may be turned, said member 16 being screw threaded as at 18 so that the same may be screw-threadedly engaged with simie lar threads in the opening in the member 14 through which the member 16 extends.
, It will be seen that by this arrangement the sleeve or socket member 16 maybe adj usted lengthwise of thesupporting member or base 13. Mounted on the base13 is a plate 19 which screw-threadedly receives the screw or bolt 20 provided with a head 21 and having a washer 22 between the same and the member 13. The bolt 20 extends through a slot 23 inthe member 13, and it will be seen that as the bolt is moved along in the slot, the member 19 can be moved or adjusted lengthwise of the base member 13 either away from or-toward the upwardly extending-portion 14L. Mounted on the member 19 is a plurality of layers of insulating material 24:, and mounted between certain of said layers of material 24 is a conducting member 25 which is provided with an upturned end portion 26 which is adapted to engage with the spring contact 27 when the inner contact member 12 of the plug 10 is out of engagement with the offset portion 28 of said contact. The members 25 and 27 are insulated from each other by a plurality of layers of said insulating material 2 1, and an additional layer of insulating material 24 overlies the contact member 27. Said conducting members 25 and 27 and all of said layers of insulating material 24: are provided with corresponding openings through which the bolts or screws 29 extend, said screws being provided with heads 30 and with insulating sleeves 31 surrounding the same, so that the screws are insulated from the contacts 25 and 27 and said contacts are insulated from each other. The member 19 is also provided with a-downwardly struck lip 32 in longitudinal alignment with the opening receiving the bolt or screw 20, said downwardly struck portion 32 engaging with the slot 23 to hold the member 19 in alignment longitudinally with the member 13. The contacts 25 and 27 are provided with terminals 33 and 3 1 respectively for securing any desired type of conductor thereto. I
Having thus described my invention, what I I desire to claim and secure by U. S. Letters Patent is:
1. A jack of the character described having a base portion and a contact finger adjustable relative to said base portion.
2. A jack of the character described having a base portion and a contact finger adjustable longitudinally relative to said base portion.
3. A jack of the character described comprising a base member, a socket member mounted therein, and a contact finger mount ed on said base but-insulated therefrom, said contact member being adjustable relative to said base.
4. A jack of the character described comp i ing a ba e, a me be m nted fo justment elative to said base, insulat ng means on said member, a contact finger mounted on said insulating means and means for securing said insulatin means and said contact finger to said member.
5. A jack of the character described comprising a base, a member mounted for adjustment relative to said base, said member being provided with means entering a slot in said base to hold the same in adjusted position insulating means on said member, a contact finger mounted on said insulating means and means for securing said insulating means and said contact finger to said member.
6. A jack of the character described comprising a base, a member mounted for adjustment relative to said base, said member being provided with means entering a slot in said base to hold the same in adjusted position, a projection on said member entering said slot to hold said member in alignment with said base, insulating means on said member, a contact finger mounted 011 said insulating means and means for securing said insulating means and said contact finger to said member. a
In itness whereof, I'hereunto subscribe my name this 12th day or April, AVD. 1922;
OLIVER oQ DENNIS.
