Description

1,. G. PERRY.
Harvesters.
N0. 142,81. Patented September16,1873.
INVENTOR.
WITNESSES.
UNITED STATES' PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN G. PERRY, OF KINGSTON, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,811, dated September 16, 1873,' application filed J une 3, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. PERRY, of Kingston, in the county of Washington and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain Improvements in Harvesters, of which the following is a specification:
This invention mainly relates to the' mode of raising and lowering the cutting apparatus of harvesters, Src., by means of a swinging pulley-block hung to an arm attached to the pole or draft-frame, so that said pulley-block shall swing on a pivot at right angles to the axis of the pulley, whereby it is enabled t0 perform the function ofthe usual spiral sector in raising and lowering the cutting apparatus.
Figure l shows a perspective view of my harvester, embodying the features of my patents of June 21, 1870, with my present improvements thereon. l
The lever A that raises the finger-bar is hung on the axle d. A ring, J, or a segment of one, is made fast to the frame O, where it surrounds the axle d. This ring J has ratchetteeth or notches made in it, into which the lower end of the locking-lever a catches. The
lever a is pivoted at about its middle to the lifting-lever A, and a spring is put between the two levers to press t-he lower end of lever a into the notches in the ring J. An arm, F, is fastened to the pole O. A swinging pulleyblock, o, is hung at the outer end of arm F. A chain, b, is fastened to the lever A, and,
passing through the block o down to the tinger-bar S, is secured to the eye e. This swinging pulley-block o is hung on a pivot at right angles to the axis of its pulley, so as to adjust itself to the degree of inclination ofthe chain in raising and lowering the cutting apparatus, and thereby performs the functions of the usual spiral sector.
By moving the lifting-lever A back around on the axle d, the inside shoe and cutting apparatus are raised to any desired height, and held at any point by the detent or locking-lever a, and notched or ratcheted segment or ring J 5 and by relieving the lever a. therefrom the cutting apparatus will be lowered, and lever A held from going beyond a proper distance forward, by means of a stop secured to said ratchet-ring or segment J for that purpose.
Having thus described these improvements, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The lifting-leverA, hung on or around the axle d and chain b, in combination with the swinging pulley-block o, hung on a pivot. at right angles to the axis of the pulley, and secured to the pole or draft-frame by arm F, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
