Description
s. H. BELLows.
Machinists Gages.
NO. 142,761. Patented September16,l873.
Mass @s @5M NTTED STATES PATENT OEEICEo STEPHEN H. BELLOWS, OF MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINISTS' GAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,961, dated September 16, 1873; application led July 7, 1873.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, STEPHEN H. BELLows, of Middletown, county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Machinists Tools 5 and to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same I will proceed to describe it, referring to the drawings, in which the same letters indicate like parts in eachE of the Iigures.
The nature of this invention will be understood from the specification and drawings, the object of which is to more perfectly and satisfactorily lay outlines, points, or bearings upon the work or article upon a planer or table bed with a greater degree of facility.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is an opposite side elevation. Fig. 3 is a section cut through the line a: in Fig. l.
A is the stock, the base b of which is about the same in width as its length, the under side of which is formed a true surface, and the front edge c is straight, and at right angles with the under surface. d is an elongated slot, parallel with the perpendicular edge e. A spirit-vial, c1, is arranged in an adjustable manner in the center of the base b, and seen from each side of the stock through the opening e. f is a blade, hinged by a pin or screw, g, at the upper end of the stock, so that the edge when closed shall be even with the edge c; and is provided with a segment arm, h, having a scale marked thereon, and a central slot, t', which traverses on and is held in any desired position or angle by a thumb -nut or screw, 7c, fitted into the side of the stock. B
is an adjusting screwbolt, tted to and plays up and down in the slot d of the stock, and is provided with a stud collar or washer, m, having an orice formed through said bolt, between the shoulders of the bolt and the end edge of said washer, to receive the markingbar p, and allow it to be adjusted as desired, and secured in that position.
In the use of this device the shaft or other round, square, octagonal, or other shaped article, upon which the gage is to be used, is first secured in clamps, or centers upon a planen bed or other machine, having a true surfaceplate, upon which the under side surface of this device may be moved from one point to another. The marking-bar is adjusted to the desired position, and by means of moving its point against the work (true surface or irregular) lines or points will be marked upon its surface.
The bevel or angle blade f is designed to be set at any required angle, and moved from point to point to x or mark angles, all of which can be performed quickly and accurately.
By the use of this improvement the mechanic is enabled to proceed with his work more rapidly and with greater accuracy.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the stock A, blade h f, and adjustable marking-bar p, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
