This invention relates to vacuum pumps and provides an improved construction thereof, which is also capable of being converted into a vacuum enginmwhen required..
According to the `inveintion the pump has a cylinder adapted to oscillate on trunnions, and a slidevalve With hinged flaps at the ends7 Working on a valve face on the cylinder.
The cylinder is caused to oscillatebelovv4 the valve by the operation of the piston rod, said valve being held against reciprocating motion by a rod pivoted to a liriture.
The interior of the slide valve is connect ed with a vacuum pipe line, either through a central port opening;v through the `valve face and a passage through the cylinder' Wall and a hollow trunnion or by means of a flexible connection.
A rear and a iront port opening` into the back end and the trent end of the cylinder respectively also open through the valve tace one at each side of the central port and are alternately `connected With or opened to the central port, or the interiorfoi the valve7 by the oscillation ot the cylinder.
ln order to cause a vacuum to be produced the crank shaft, is rotated in the opposite direction, to which a pump crank yshaft is usually rotated.
.As the pump piston travels its tirst strolre the cylinder becomes filled with rareied air, Which has to be compressed to atmospheric pressure be'lore it can be driven out.
The hinged llaps prevent the entrance ot air to the cylinder through the rear and front ports, on the exhaust side et the piston, thereby preventing the creation ot back pressure in the pump and making same easier to drive.
At the same time the hinging ci the flaps permits the latter to lift and allow the Specification of Letters stent.

ln Figures and G the central port 5 is dispensed with, and the connection from the pipe line is made direct to the valve 15 by means of a flexible connection 23.
By removing the flaps i8, and connect-- ing the machine up with vacuum creatisource through either the hollow trunnion 2, passage d and port 5, or the flexible connection 23, so that vacuum is caused to act continuously in the interior 17 ol the valve 15, the cranlr shaft is caused to ro# tate in the usual direction and develop power as a vacuum driven engine.
lWhat We do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is l. ln a pump, an oscillating cylinder provided with a valve seat, a piston reciprocally mounted in the cylinder, said cylinder having ports extending,` from the valve tace to the opposite extremities of the cylinder, a hollovv valve movable on said valve tace, and linlr pivotally connected at one end at a point removed from the axis oit m vement ot the cylinder and connected its opposite end with the valve whereby the latter is moved across the valve seat co-incident with the oscillation of the cylinder.

In a pump, an oscillating` cylinder provided with valve tace and ports extending` from the valve face to the opposite extremities of the cylinder', a piston reciprocally mounted in the cylinder, a valve movable over said valve face to alternately un* cover said ports, means for limiting the movement ot the valve With respect to the cylinder whereby, during oscillation of the latter, the ports are alternately uncovered, and pivoted flaps' carried by the valve arranged to cover the ports and adapted to be opened by the internal fluid pressure iu the extremities oi' the cylinder.
