Description

. FQRSYTH DISK WHEEL.
APPLICATION man FEB. 21
H he W GEORGE H. FORSYTH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DISK WHEEL.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pgrtgnted Aug, 29, 1922 Driginal application filed November 26, 1918, Serial No. 264,253. Divided and this application filed February 21, 1921.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it-known that l, GEORGE H. FonsYTH, a citizen of the United States, residing atI Chicago, in the county of C ook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disk llflieels, of which the following is a specification.
This application isa division of my copending application Serial No. 264,253. The invention of this application relates to metal wheels of the disk type adapted for use in connection with pneumatic tires.
The principal object ot the invention is to conform and construct the disk in its peripheral portion adjacent the felly and rim so as to afford ready access to the valve stem of the pneumatic tirefcarried thereby.
l have found it advantageous to construct the disk body of awheel of curved radial cross-section or atan inclination to the plane of the wheel 4in order to impart" thereto a substantialfdegree of resiliency under ioad stresses. As the valve stem` ordinarily lies in the median plane of a wheel, the crossing of such plane by the disk adjacent the periphery thereotl involves interference. between the valve stem and disk and renders the former diflicult of access.
According to the present invention, the aforementioned difficulty is solved by pro riding the disk with an aperture substantially in line with the valve stem axis, through which the valve stem may project or be reached; or, alternatively, by forming a depression or pocket in the disk to accommodate the valve stem or to afford roomy for effecting an air pipe coupling therewith. y
ln order that the invention may be readily understood, l have in the accompanying drawings set forth preferred. and modified embodiments thereof as an illustrative basis for the description of the invention.`
ln the drawings- 4 Y A Fig.' 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a wheel embodying the invention with a portion thereof broken away to show the valve stem;
Fig. 2 is a tranverse section through the peripheral portion ofthe wheel shown in Fig. 1;
Figs. 3, ltand 5 are views similar to Fig. 2 but showing modified provision for the valve stem,
vSerial No. 446,862.
Having particular reference to Figs. 11 and 2 of the drawing, corresponding tb Figs.
1 and 2 of the parent application, the single disk 11 of the wheel is shown, throughout the greater portion of its periphery, as extending radially at 12 to the point 13 and thence horizontally at 121 towards the rear and thence radially at 15, and terminating in an inclined lip for supporting the rear side ofthe demountablerim 16. At'intervals, however, pockets 17 are formed in the rear of the wheel by bending the metal radially at 18 from near the point 13 t0 the point 19 and thence in a general hori- Zontal direction to the rear underneath the rim. The purpose of this pocket 17.1 is to bring the wall 18 nearer the rim-retaining shim 20 to enable the use of short bolts 21 'as a securing means.
TheI crossing of the median plane of the wheel by the disk portion 14 intercepts the valve stem 22 and, to accommodate the latter.l the disk is apertured at 234 for the passage therethrough of the valve stem and cap..
In F ig. 3, corresponding to Fig. 8 of the parent application, a peripheral fragment of a wheel is illustrated having two disks 24 and 25. line of the disk 25 is substantially radial as indicated by the position of the reference numeral` but at the point corresponding axially with the valve stem 22, and permissibly at other points corresponding to the shim securing bolts 21, the disk 25 is depressed inwardly to form pockets 26 for the housing of the valve stem which is thereby rendered readily accessible froml that side of the wheel, the base portion of the valve stem in this case, passing through the horizontal portion 25 of the disk 25 as well as the portion 24a of the disk 24.
ln that form of construction shown in Fig. 4, corresponding to Fig. 11 of the parent application, the wheel is shown as comprising two disks 27 and 28 spaced apart, the disk 28 extending in a sweeping curve as indicated by the reference numeral throughout the greater portion of its peripheral extent. At a point, however, corresponding to the location of the valve stem, the disk 28 is depressed inwardly at 29 to the position indicated in sec-tion at 22a from which posi `tion the disk is reverselv bent intereentin ln the present case the generalY again horizontally.V Here, as in `the vformer instancesy vthe Wheel disk intercepts lthe median plane of the Wheel and the airis of the valve stein, an aperture lbeing provided therethrough for the accommodation of the valve stem and, as in Fig. 3, a pocket housing for the valve cap 22 being provided.
' in Fig. 5, corresponding to Fig. le of the parent application, the disks 30 and 31 embrace the valve stem 22 immediately beneath the rim 16 and for a slight distance therebelovv. In order to give access to the valve stein and cap, the disk 3l is provided With a depression or pocket 32 into whiclithe valve stem cap projects through an aperture 33 in the upper Wall 82a of the pocket 32.
lt is obvious`3 the essential object of the invention being to provide access to the valve stem, that the particular location of the aperture or of the pocket is not ot' moment, and will he controlled by the cross-sectional contour of the disk employed and by the taste of the designer affecting his choice of having a smooth uninterrupted front face with access to the valve stem from the rear, 'or a broken front face ivith access to the valve f rom the front; the terms front and rear and their use in connection with the illustration and description of the invention being relative only and not terms of iimitation. liloreover, it will be understood that the several embodiments of the invention illustrated and described herein are intended as exemplications only, the invention obviously being susceptible of embodiment in various other modifications Without departure from the essence thereof or sacrifice of its material advantages, WhereforeV the illustration and description are to be taken in an illustrative and not in an unnecessarily limiting sense.
l claim:
l. The combination orp a vvheel having a disk body, a telly, a tire-carrying rim, and a tire having a valve stem, the disk body having a portion intercepting the valve stem axis and apertured at the point 'of interception for affording access to the valve stem.
2. The combination of a Wheel having a disk body, a vtelly, a tire-carrying rim, and `a tire having a valve stein, the disk body having a portion intercepting the axis of the valve stein and apertured at said point of interception and the valve stem extending through said aperture.
3. The combination oi a Wheel having a disk body, a telly, a tire-carrying rim, and a tire having a valve stem. the disk body having formed therein a depression spaced from the telly and extending across the median plane of 'the Wheel and including the valve stem axis, that part of the disk body forming the upper Wall ot the depression apertured and the valve stem extending therethrough into the pocket to render the same accessible.
ln testimony whereof l have hereunto subscribed in v name in the presence of tivo siibscrihing Witnesses.
GEORGE ii. FORSYTH.
