Description

1. B. ASTON- Devices for Blackwashing Molds. No, 142,661, PatenfedSeptemberQ,1873.
- WITNESS S. IJV'II/EAJ/TOR I B Q .4it0meys.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. ASTON, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR BLACKWASHING MOLDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,661, dated September 9, 1873 application filed June 20, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN B. AsToN, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for the Manufacture of Cast-Iron Pipe; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
In the manufacture of cast-iron pipes, after the flask is placed in position, the pattern is lowered into the flask to its proper place, and sand is thrown in and rammed down. The pattern is then withdrawn, leaving the mold formed, which mold must then be coated with a fluid paste known as blackin g or black-wash. Heretofore this has generally been done by swabbing, which is not only tedious, but does the work more or less imperfectly. -I accomplish this in a thorough and excellent manner by causing the black-wash to flow in a thin sheet over the whole interior surface of the mold when upright in place; and to this end the nature of my invention consists in a circular board having beveled edges and suitable handles, and lowered into the mold a short distance below the upper edge, so as to distribute the black-wash, which is thrown on the same, in a thin sheet, over the entire interior surface of the mold.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents a circular board, having beveled edges, and
is made somewhat smaller than the interior of the mold to be blackened. For pipes from two feet down to six or eight inches interior diameter, the board A is entirely plain on top, and simply provided with two handles, B B, through which a rod is passed, so that the board can be lowered a short distance below the upper edge of the mold, and be supported by the rod resting on the mold. One or two buckets of the black-wash are then thrown on the board, and flows down around its entire circumference in a thin sheet, coating the entire interior surface of the mold. For larger pipes, where a greater quantity of black-wash is needed to coat the mold, the board A is, on its upper surface, provided with radiating partitions or flanges O O, forming compartments D D, into each of which a bucket of the blackwash is thrown, all being thrown simultaneously.
Having thus fully described my invention, what f'claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A circular board having suitable handles and beveled edges, its upper surface being made plain, or otherwise suitably formed to distribute the blackwash, as is herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of May, 1873.
JOHN B. ASTON.
