The modified form of the cylinder head shown in Figs. 3 and 4 is, in fact, the preferred form of construction. The gravity valves are lighter than the valve shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and respond more readily to the discharge pumping action of the cylin- Furthermore, the gravity members 35 of the valves are interchangeable with the corresponding parts 19 and valves and exhaust port, respectively. Thus, the construction of the pump as a whole is materially simplified and cheapened. It will be obvious from the illustration shown in Fig. 3 that the operation of i the modified valves is substantially the same as the operation of the gravity valve 21, the air passages 36 and 37 serving the same purpose as the corresponding passages 2425 and 26 in the construction shown in Fig. 1 l and the passages 38 leading to the valves 35 serving the same purpose as the direct opening into the cylinder of the valve passage 20.
From the foregoing detailed the construction, operation and results of operation of the improved pump will be readily understood by those experienced in this art.

1. In anair pump, the combination, with a cylinder having near one end an inlet port and a valve therefor opening inward, an outlet port and a valve therefor opening outward, and having near the other end an outlet passage and a valve therefor opening outward, of a piston operating within the cylinder between said ports, whereby on the suction stroke air is drawn into the cylinder, on the reverse stroke air is forced out of the cylinder and whereby any air that leaks between the cylinder and piston is discharged through said outlet port when the piston is making its suction stroke, thus relieving the piston of back pressure.
2. In an air pump, the combination, with a structure comprising at one end a cylinder and at the other a closed chamber, an inlet port for the cylinder end with a valve closing outward, an outlet port at said end with a valve closing inward, and an outlet port from the chamber-end with a valve closing inward, of a piston within the cylinder portion and a crank shaft within the chamber-portion, whereby on the suction stroke air is drawn into the cylinder and any air within the chamber is essentially discharged therefrom.
3. In an air pump, the combination, with a structure comprising a cylinder at one end and a closed chamber at the other, an air chamber having an inlet ort and communicating with one end of tlie cylinder, valves for said chamber opening inward, a plate having an outlet port with a valve opening outward, a assage from said chamber leading outwar and a valve therefor opening outward, of a piston in the cylinder and crank shaft in the chamber, whereby air is drawn into and discharged from the cylinder and whereby also any air that passes the piston and enters said chamber is essentially discharged.
4. In an air pump, the combination of a cylinder having a piston operable therein, a circumferential air chamber 17 having intake ports 28, and an annular air channel leadin into the cylinder near one end there-. of, an gravity-action valves normally closing communication between said circumferential air chamber and said annular air channel, and a closed casing at the other end of the cylinder, an exhaust port communicating with this end of the cylinder through said casing, and a gravity action valve for said port, whereby upon operation of the piston air will be takeniinto the cylinder on one side of the piston through said intake ports and annular air channel, and any air within the cylinder on the other side of the piston will be discharged to relieve the piston of back pressure.
