IMPROVEMENT IN CARBURETERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,545, dated September 2, 1873; application filed June 3, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that we, J AMEs F. and GEORGE E. LOCKWOOD, of Taylorville, in the county of Christian and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Carbureter and Gras-Generator; and We do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which form part of this specification.
Our invention relates to devices for 4generat- `ing and carbureting gas; and consists in certain modifications in the details, and `novel arrangement of parts, in the construction of gas generators and carbureters, as herein shown and described.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of the speciication herein, Figure 1 is a vertical section of our improved gas carbureter and generator. Fig. 2 represents a governor or regulator which may be used therein.
In the drawing referred to, A designates the outer casing. B indicates an upright cylinder stood on the bottom of casing, to which it is attached, said cylinder being closed at the top, and having the perforations c at its upper and lower extremities. bis an attachment to the top of cylinder B, sloping outwardly from same, and causing the gas, as it leaves said cylinder, to-pass downward through the sawdust-'packing with which the easing is filled. a indicates the governor or regulator, in the form of an inverted cup, which has the pcrforations c.
The said regulator may be made asv represented in Fig. 2. A l
It is so constructed that it may rest on the bottom Without closing the mouth of pipe g; and, in case of pressure caused by a sudden 110W of gas, it rises, and, restraining the discharge of gas, causes it to continue steady at the burner.
d is the inlet-pipe for oil, which should lbe poured in till it reaches a point above iiow cock f. gis the inlet-pipe for gas or air, to be used in generating gas. h indicates the gage or indicator, toshow the height of oil within; and k the pipe through which the gas passes from the machine.
By the use of this device as a carbureter, the gas passing through becomes softer and milder, and a great saving is effected in the quant-ity consumed. Gas is also generated by forcing air into it.
In a gas generator or carbureter, the governor or regulator a, provided with the apertures e, in combination with cylinder B, having attachment?) relatively arranged within the lled casing, as shown and described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing We have hereunto set our handsthis 8th day of May, 1873. J. F. LOCK WOOD. G. E. LOCKWOOD.
Witnesses:
