' Application filed April 28,
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, GUs'rAvE F. KRIEsEL, a citizen of the United States, resident of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Boring and Milling Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to an adjunct or auxiliary attachment used with the 'type of machine shown and described in my pendingapplications for Letters Patent of the United States, No. 167,819, filed May 10, 1917, and No. 230,412 filed April 24, 1918.
The object of this present invention is to provide means in connection with the hollow feed shaft of my boring machine for easily and quickly centering the work on the face plate and for re-adusting lthe tools cut in boring a cylinder or oth'- er article without the necessity of removing the tool from the machine or displacing the work.
`The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a boring and milling machine embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is a front view of theupper portion of the machine, showing the supporting. face plate and the clamps, thereon, l
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the hollow shaft, the supporting sleeve and a portion of the face plate, showing the position of the work thereon preliminary to the centering operation,
Figure 4 is a sectional' view through the F igure 5 isa sectional view on'the line 5-5 of Figure 4,
Figure 6 is a sectional 6 6 of Figure 5,
Figure 7 is a sectional view showing the centering head in positionin the cylinder.
Figure 8 is a similar view, showing the manner of mounting the tool in the head in place of the centering blocks.
Figure 9 is a detail view of the means for` adusting the tools and the scale by means view on the line Specification of Letters Patent.
'or backward by Patented Aug. 1, 1922.' 1919. Serial No. 293,172.
of which the degreeof adjustment can be determined.
In the drawing, 2 represents the frame of the machine, having an upright face plate 3 secured to one end thereof and provided with an orifice 4 therein. 5 is a work-supporting table mounted on the front of the supported in bearings in the frame of the thereon that machine and having a rack 8 for the puris engaged by a feed pinion 9 I4pose of moving the sleeve forward or backwith respect to the orifice and the work. 10 represents a hollow shaft mounted in bearings in the sleeve 7 and provided with a gear 11 meshing with a pinion 12 on a shaft 13 that is driven through gears 14 and 15 from the shaft 16. this mechanismv the shaft 10 is fed forward the movement of the sleeve and at the same time is revolved in the sleeve to operate the tools.
The sleeve 7 is seated against a shoulder 10'EL provided at the forward end of the shaft 10, and nuts 10b engage -an exteriorly threaded portion of the shaft 10 and the rear end of the sleeve for clamping it against the shoulder 10a forward or feeding movement of the sleeve and shaft, while allowing the shaft to 'revolve in .the sleeve independently of the feeding movement. Bearings 17 are provided in the top of the frame for a shaft indicated in dotted linesV whereon a milling tool- (not shown) may be mounted.
The details of the feed mechanism I do .not illustrate in this application, as it forms no part of my' present invention. l
The hollow shaft 10 has its exteriorly threaded end 18 projecting beyond the sleeve 7 for supporting a centering head or tool carrier 19, according to the work to be performed. A rod 20 is fitted concentrically within the hollow shaft 10 and at its outer rear end is provided with -a finger grip 21 ward ` having ahub 22 that is seated against the end By means of for a simultaneous `means of which the person revolving the rod therein and a loose pin 26 fitting in the wall of the socket and a tapered spindle 27 is threaded at 28 in the end of the rod and is provided with a finger grip 29. VVhe'n this spindle is screwed into the socket, its tapered end will engage the pin 26 and force it out-. wardly against the wall ofthe shaft and thereby lock the shaftand rod against relative movement. When the tapered spindle is retracted, and the pin released, the rod may be revolved in the shaft to obtain the desired adjustment of a centering head or the tools.
The opposite end of the rod has a squared portion 30 to enter a correspondingly shaped socket provided in a bevel gear 31 mounted in the head 19. The head 19 is provided-with a plurality of radial guides 33 in which centering blocks 34 are mounted to slide and are provided with internally threaded sockets 35 to receive the threaded ends of studs 36 on beveled pinions 37 arranged around the bevel gear 31 and meshing therewith. They studs 36 are held against longitudinal movement by the engagement of the gears 37 with shoulders 38 on one side of the gears and abutments on a head 39 held centrally in the head 19 by screws 32 so that the gears 37 and the studs 36 when revolved by the gear 31 will have no longitudinal movement but will feed the centering blocks 34 back and forth in the guides in a direction depending on the direction of movement of the operating rod and the gear 31. Then the centering blocks are projected, they will enlgage the inner surface of the cylinder or other articles to be centered and the clamps of-the cylinder onl the face plate being loosened sufficiently, the cylinder will be moved by thepressure of the centering blocks until it is exactly vconcentric withthe tool carrying shaft. When this has been done, the clamps are tightened and the cylinder securely locked in position to be bored or for whatever work is to be done upon it.
rlhe gear 31 preferably has hub bearings in a ring 40 seated in the head 19, held in place by screws 41, and the gear is counterored to receive a rounded portion of the head 39 as an aditional bearing. The centering blocks 34 may be provided with sockets 42 adapted to receive a tool 43 secured in the socket by a suitable means, such as a set screw 44. en this screw is tightened, the tool will be securely locked in the block and held firmly while at work. rI`he same blocks may, therefore, be used for centering purposes and as supports for the tools, the latter being removed when used for centering the work with respect to the tool supporting shaft. Of course, if preferred, these centering blocks may be rethe blocks are `moved entirely from the head and specially constructed tool carrying blocks substituted therefor.
In case it is desired to readjust the tools in the head, the supporting shaft and the sleeve may be withdrawn until the head is in the position shownv in Figure 3, when the spindle 27 may be loosened and then by turning the finger grip 22 and watching the scale of the hub of this grip and the adjacent'collar, the tools may be projected a greater distance to increase the out in the wall of the cylinder or retracted, if preferred, to adapt the tools for a cylinder with a different bore, all without the necessity of removing the tools from the head or changing the'position of the cylinder or other work on the face plate. I am thus able to save the labor of removing or readjusting the work in the machine and all readjusting of I-the tools to change the degree of cut thereof. Furthermore, the simultaneous adjustment of the 'tools by the mechanism described will insure an exact movement thereof and the certainty of each tool projecting precisely the, same distance from its supporting head.
