T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JosnrH SoLAoK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in boats, the general object of the invention being to provide improved propelling means for the boat, such means comprising rockable members having blades thereon so arranged that on the propelling stroke the blades will be opento bring the maximum surface against the water and on the return stroke the blades will close to offer the minimum resistance in the passage of the device through the water.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the stem to which the blades are attached can be reversed in order to reverse the action of the blades through the water so that the boat can be propelled in an opposite direction.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of theseveral parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illus trated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, ref erence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention.

In these views A. indicates a boat which may be of any desired construction and 1 indicates the propelling members for the boat. Each member comprises a shaft 2 arranged in a horizontal bearing 3 which is suitably secured to each side of the boat. A socket member 4 is secured to the outer end of each shaft and a crank 5 is secured and 6 are detail views of a position.
to the inner end of each shaft. This crank is provided with guideway 6 in which are slidably mounted a flat bar 7 which has a handle 8 at its upper end and a foot piece 9 at its lower end. This bar 7 is held in adjusted position in the guideways by the lock bolt 10. A stem 11 is adapted to engage each socket member 4, the stem being adjustably mounted in the socket member by means of the pin 12 engaging holes 13 in the stem and member. I also provide means for preventing turning movement of the stem in the socket member, such means consisting of a flat piece 14 in the upper end of the stem engaging notches 15 in the socket member, said flat piece having an extension which forms a handle.
The lower end of the stein has hinged thereto a pair of blades 16 for offering resistance to the passage of the device through thewater. These blades have stops 17 thereon for engaging a projection 18 on the stem, these stops and projections acting to prevent the bladesfrom moving beyond a fully open position. The projection 18 extends through the stem sothat it has a portion which is engaged by the bladeswhen they are in closed- Thus the blades can only move a quarter revolution on the stem before encountering the projection.
I forinahole 19 in the stop and a hole 20 in one of the blades so that this blade can be secured to the projection when desired and the device used with but one blade.
In the modification the stem is provided with a rightangular projecting part 21 to which the upper edge of the single blade 22 is hinged. Stops 23 are placed on this blade and part 21 to limit the movement of the blade so as to cause it to present one face to the water when the propelling device is moving in its propelling stroke. On the other stroke the blade will feather and thus oifer the least resistance on the return stroke of the device.
It will thus be seen that the boat can be propelled by the combined action of the arms and legs, the blades offering the maximum surface to the water on the propelling stroke and feathering on the return stroke. In both forms of the device by reversing the stems the action of the blades can be reversed so as to propel the boat rearwardly. By having the handle members ad ustable they can be made to suit persons of different sizes.

A propelling device comprising a shaft arranged in a horizontal bearing secured to'one' side of a boat, said shaft having a socket member secured 'to the outer end thereof and a crank secured to the inner eiid thereof, a guideway provided on said crank, a flat bar slidablymounted in said guideWay and" a handle provided on the former at, its upper end and a foot piece on its lower end, a lock bolt adapted to hold saidbar in adjusted'positionin the gu-idevvay, a stem adapted to engage the socket member and 'adjustably mounted therein, a pin engaging opening formed in the stem and member, for ad ustably mounting the stem in the socket member, means for preventing movement of the stem in =the socket consisting of a flat piece in the upper end of said stem engaging notches formed in said socket member, said flat piece having an extension provided thereon to form a handle, apair of blades hinged to the lower end of said stem for offering resistance to the passage of 'the device through the Water, stops provided on said blades" adapted to engage a projection on the stem and acting to prevent the blades from moving beyond a fully opened position.

An apparatus of the class described comprisin propelling members, each member including ashaft arranged in a horizontal bearing substantially secured to one side of the boat. a socket member secured to the outer end of each shaft and a crank secured to the inner end thereof, said crank having a guideway, a flat bar slidably mounted in said guideway, a handle provided at the upper'end of said bar and a foot piece at the lower end thereof, means for holding said bar in adjusted position, a stem adapted to engage each socket member and adjustablymounted therein, means for preventing turning movement of the stem in the socket member consisting of a flat piece in the upper end of the stem engaging notches in the socket member, an extension provided on the fiat piece to form a handle, a pair of blades hi'ngedly secured to the loWer end of the stem which have stops thereon and a projection provided on thestem engagingsaid stops.
