To all whom it may 0012 oer-n Be it known that I, GEORGE K. HENDERSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of'lndiana, have invented a certain new and useful Carton Sealer; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
This invention relates to a carton or box ea'ling machine of a semi-automatic type, wherein the knock-down cartons or boxes are placed on forms and their end flaps sealed by clamping them downafter adhesive material has been applied, and holding themclamped 1n position llllllll the adhesion is complete. i
The main object of the invention is to pro vide a semi-automatic device whereby the operator simply places the cartons or boxes in position on the form and arranges the flaps, after which the machine is turned to bring another form into position, which causes the clamping of the flaps and secures them is sealed position until the form again reaches the operator, after which the clamp is automatically released so as to permit the removal of the carton and replacement thereof. a
One feature of the invention is to provide a cam means for causing the releaseof the clamping plates and their complete removal from the form so as to permit the box or carton to be replaced.
Another feature of the invention is the guiding member for causing the sealing plate to return to sealing position after it has been elevated therefrom by the cam member.
The full nature of this invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.
In the drawings Fig. 1 'is a plan view looking down upon the machine. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
In the drawings there is shown a revolving table lOpivotally supported upon the standard 11, at about the same height as an ordinary table. The table 10 is free to rotate on said standard, and is revolved thereon by the operator who sits at the point A. The standard '11 extends up through the table and has clamped to the upper end rality of upright form supporting members,
17 upon which are slidably and removably mounted the carton or box forms 18. Said box forms are slidably mounted in the la eral guideways 19 so as to be laterally adjustable thereon whereby a form of varying widths may be centered beneath the sealing plate.- The sealing plates 20 are secured to the lever arms 21 on the end of which are mounted metal weights 22. Said platesare mounted in such a positionthat, when the arms-21 are horizontal, the plates 21 rest upon the top endof the forms 18, with a cushion 23 between them. Said cushion is secured to the bottom surface of the plate. The arms 21 are hinged at the rear top of the supports 17 by hinges 2d, and have extending rearwardly therefrom the cam engaging members 25 which maybe rotatably mount ed on the exmnsions 26, secured to the arms 21. The cam engaging members 25 are provided with an annular flange 27 at their rear end. Each of the forms is provided with adjustable guide members 28 which enable the operator to'quic kly slide the carton on the form and guide it in position thereon.
Beneath the cam member 18 there is mounted a guide member 29 which is rigidly secured to the standard 11 by the collar 30. The member 29 is provided with an upwardly extending flange 31 which is so curved and positioned as to engage the cam engaging members 25 when the arms 21 are in tilted*positi'on,"as shown at the left of "Fig. 2, and cause said members 25 to be the engagement of the members 25 with the projecting flange 15. lVhile in this position, the remaining cartons are under pressure of the clamping plate and the weight 22. After properly positioning the carton and flaps and applying suitable adhesive, the operator turns the machine a one quarter revolution, causingthe member 25, which is extending downwardly, to :engage the upturned flange 31 of the guide member 29 so as to force it outwardly as its movement is permitted by the cam 13. The weight 22 then causes the arm 21 to drop into horizontal position, and the clamping plate 20 rests upon the sealing flaps under the pressure of the weight 22. Duringthis quarter movement of the table the form on the right approaches the operator. The engaging member 25, connected with said plates, engages the downwardly curvededge 16 of the cam 13, causing the clamping plate to be elevated. Upon said form coming in position opposite the operator, the said member 25 is then engaged by the outwardly extending flange 15 which forces the arm 21 to'substantiallyan up right perpendicular position. The clamping plate isthereby moved from in the way of the-operator so as to permit free access to the form, after which it is actuated inthe same manner as above setforth. It will, therefore, be obvious that it is only necessary for the operator to replace the boxes or cartons on'the form, arrange the flaps andturn the table, no attention being needed to operate the-clamping plates. The clamping plates are, as above described, entirely operated and controlled by the movement of the table.
' The invention claimed is:
1. A sealing machine for paperreceptacles having means for supporting a receptacle, means for clamping and sealing saidreceptacle under pressure, and a separate means for actuating said clamp and sealing means for causing the same to automatically release said receptacle for permitting its removal and replacement, and thereafter causing said clamping and sealing means to be auto matically brought to operative position.
- 2. A sealing machine for paper-receptacles having means for supporting a receptacle, means for clamping and sealin said receptacle under pressure, means for actuating said clamping and sealing-means for causingthe same to a utomatically'release said receptacle for permitting its removal and replacement, and means for thereafter causing the clamping and sealing means to be automatically brought to operative position by the relative movement between "said clamping and sealing means and said last mentionedmeans.
8. A sealingmachine for cartons, boxes andithe'like, comprising a support, a plurality of-receiyingf'forms'mounted 'onsaid support, means for clamping and sealing said cartons thereon, a cam member adapted to actuate said sealing and clamping means for releasing said cartons, and means for automatically causing said means to engage said carton after being released therefrom.
l. A sealing machine for cartons, boxes and the like comprising a movable support, a plurality of forms mounted on said sup port for receiving the cartons, clamping and scaling arms mounted in comicction with said forms for clamping and sealing said cartons, and an annular cam member provided with a bearing surface extending from the upper portion to the lower portion thereof and terminating in a radially extending bearing surface, substantially as described.
5. A sealing machine for cartons, boxes and the like comprising a movable support, a plurality of forms mounted on said support for receiving the cartons, clamping and sealing arms mounted in connection with said forms for clamping and sealing said cartons, a weight mounted on the end of each of said arms, and an annular cam member centrally positioned on said support provided with a bearing surface extending from the top to the bottom portion thereof for engaging the guide portion of said clamp and causing it to tilt upon its pivot. and a radially extending bearing surface for engaging said arm and forcing it to substantially an upright position.
6. A sealin machine for cartons, boxes and the like comprising a rotatable support,
a plurality of forms mounted on said support for receiving the carton, clamping and sealing arms pivotally mounted in connection' with said fern s for clamping and seal said carton, a weight mounted on the end-of each of said arms, an annular cam member provided with a downwardly extending bearing surface extending from the upper portion to the lower portion thereof and terminating in a radially extending bearingsurface in position to be engaged by one end. of said arms for causing the same to tilt about their pivot points for releasing said cartons, and a flanged member mounted in connection with said cam member for en gaging the opposite side of the ends of said arms for causing'the same to be tilted back into engaging position after being released by said cam.
7. A sealing machine for cartons, boxes and the like, comprising a support, a plurality of forms mounted on said support, means for clamping andsealing said cartons, a cam member adapted to actuate said sealing means to permit replacement of can tons to be sealed, and a guide member adapted to actuate said sealing means in connection with said cam member for causing the engagement and sealing thereof after replacement of the cartons.
8. A sealing machine for cartons, boxes and the like, comprising a standard, a support rotatably mounted on said standard, a plurality of forms mounted on said sup port, means for clamping and sealing said cartons, a cam member fixedly mounted on said standard adapted to engage and actuate said sealing means through the relative movement between said cam member and rotatable support to permit replacement of cartons to be sealed, and a guide member fixedly secured to said standard and so positioned as to engage said clamping and sealing means to cause them to engage and clamp said cartons after the same have moved past said cam member.
9. A sealing machine for cartons, boxes and the like, comprising a standard, a support rotatably mounted on said standard, a plurality of forms mounted on said sup port, an arm pivoted on said support, one end of which is positioned to engage and clamp one of said cartons, a weight mounted thereon for exerting a downward pressure on said carton when said arm is in horizontal position, a cam member secured to said standard in position to be engaged by the other end of said arm for causing the elevation thereof to a substantially vertical position so as to permit replacement of a carton to be sealed, and a guide member secured on said standard in position to engage the downwardly extending end of said arm and cause the same to move to a horizontal position as it passes said cam member upon the rotation of said supporting means, for causing the engagement and clamping thereby of saidcartons.
10. A sealing machine for cartons, boxes and the like, comprising a standard, a support rotatably mounted on said standard, a plurality of forms mounted on said support, an arm pivoted on said support, one end of which is positioned to engage and clamp one of said cartons, a weight mounted thereon for exerting a downward pressure on said carton when said arm is in horizontal position, a cam member having downwardly extending bearing edges and an outwardly extending flange adapted to be ingaged by the relative movement of said clamping arm to cause the same to be substantially vertically positioned so as to permit the replacement of carton to be sealed, and a guide member secured 011 said standard in position to engage the downwardly extending end of said arm and cause the same to move to a horizontal position as it passes said cam member upon the rotation of said supporting means, for causing the engagement and clamping thereby of said cartons.
