State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Valve Devices, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention has for its object the construction of a valve for controlling a. motor device suitable for various purposes, but particularly useful in the operation of guiders such as employed in btenter and other textile machinery and controlled by the selvages, for the purpose of properly guiding the fabric into the machine. I
My object is further, to provide a construction in which themotor is quick and responsive in action and. controlled by a valve mechanism which may be operated under the most delicate manipulation.

.proved valve that these mechanisms shall be capable of easy adjustment to insure thecontrol of the motive fluid without any appreciable binding or friction comin upon the valve piece which controls the flow of the motive fluid. I
My object is also to provide a quick-acting valvedevice which shall be, relatively inexpensive in construction and durable in operation,'so as to eliminate material repairs.
With the above and other objects in View, the nature of which will be more fully understood from the description hereinafter, the invention consists in the novel construction of a valve device as hereinafter more fully described and defined in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a vertical section through my improved valve device as applied to a motor taken on line of Fig. 2; Fig. 2, is an elevation of the same with part in section, taken on line y-y; Fig. 3 is a plan view of my improved valve device with the upper part of the motor removed; Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of the same, taken on line 2-2 of Fig. l; and Fig. 5 is a perspective View illustrating the movable valve piece.
2 is the body of the motor,made in disc form and provided with a cap 3 screwedupon the body at its perimeter 4c. Clamped between the body 2 and cap 3 adjacent to this union is a rubber diaphragm 5, which is connected at its center with a plunger 7, the latter guided in a hub 9 on the central outerportion of the cap 3. This ,plunger, provided with. two discs 6, screwed Y upon it and arranged. respectively on oppositesidesof the rubber diaphragm so as to make a 't lght joint between said dia phragm and the plunger; and a nut 8 on the lower end of the plunger locks the parts together in firm relation. A light coil spring 10 isarrangeol about the plunger 7 and between the upper disc 6, and the hub portion 9 of the cap, said spring acting to return the rubber diaphragm to its nor malposition when pressure below the diaphragm is relieved. The central portion of Downwardly projecting from the body 2 are two parallel arms 13, forming aspace 13 between them in which a .valve piece 15 is located and adapted to swing or os :illate under, the control of a rock shaft L4 journalled near the lower or free ends of the arms. This valve piece is clearly shown in the several figures of the draw-; ing and more particularly in Fig. 5 thereof and comprises a hub portion secured to the rock shaft 1 1 and provided with a radial arm 15 terminating at its outer end in a head 16, having opposite parallel surfaces 18 and 28 There is also a transverse hole or port 19 through this head 16, and upon each side of the said port on the face 18 of the head there is provided a vertical parallel groove 17, which grooves are for the purpose of exhausting fluid pressure from the motor device. .The supply of fluid pressure is controlled by the port 19 in the manner to be now described. u
20 is asupply port for the fluid pressure and opens transversely through one of the arms 13; and may receive its supply of fluid pressure from a-pipe, 21. The head 16 of the valve piece has its fiat surface 28, working in contact with the inner face of the arm 13 through which the port 20 opens so that the port 19 of the head, when brought into alinement with the supply port 20, will permit the passage of fluid pressure from the pipe 21 through the port 20 and through the valve piece on its way to supply the motor through the port 27.
At the opposite side of the valve piece is an adjustable bushing 22, which provides a seat over which the valve piece is oscillated. This bushing 22 screws into a hole 23' extending transversely through the other ofthe arms 13 and may be adjusted so as to just make a close fit with the head of the valve piece, but with avoidance of objectionable friction thereon. By careful adjustmentot the bushing, the valve piece may be adjusted between the stationary face of the first-mentioned arm 13 and the bushing 22 in such manner as will permit the tree oscillation of said valve piece without any material leakage of the fluid pressure. The bushing 22 is provided with an annular recess about its middle, as at 26, and this part of reduced diameter is provided with a transverse aperture 25 from which opens longitudinal port 24 extending axially through the inner part of the bushing and in alinement with the fluid supply port 20,

It will now be understood, that when the valve piece is brought into such position that the port 19 is in alinement with the ports 20 and 24, as shown in Fig. 1, the pressure supplying fluid passes freely through the valve piece, and through the ports 24 and 25 in the bushing, thence upward'through the port 27 into the motor chamber of the body 2, with the result that the diaphragm is forced upward, carrying with it the plunger 7. When the valve piece is oscillated slightly so as to move the port 19 out of alinement with the ports and 24.,- and to bring one of the exhaust grooves 17 into alinement with the port 24 of the bushing, the fluid pressure supply from the port 20 is shut ofi" by the valve piece and the pressure medium in the motor is permitted to escape or exhaust by passing throughthe ports 27, and 24 into the groove portion 17 of the valve piece and thence escape to the outside atmosphere. When this action takes place, the spring 10 assists the elasticity of the diaphragm 5 in drawing the plunger 7 downward to its initial position. In this manner the plunger is reciprocated commensurately with the oscillations of the valve piece 15.
As it is essential that the valve piece shall bring its port 19 into exact alinement with ports 20 and 24, I provide for this purpose a stop screw 32 which acts" as an abutment to the movement of the valve piece in one direction, namely, that which puts the motor into. action. This screw 32 may be carried by the U cover frame 30 which fits over the arms 13 to shield or enclose the valve piece, said frame being secured in place by screws 31.
While it is preferable for the stop screw 32 to bring the valve piece to rest in open or supplying position, it is manifest that the adjustment of the screw may be such that the valve piece is brought to rest in the exhaust position if so desired, such modification of adjustment being dependent upon theuse to which the valve device is put.
As the head 16 of the valve piece is to be capable otadjustment by action of the seat bushing 22, it is manifest that the hub portion should not be held by the arms 13 against slight adjustment and hence I have provided slight clearance for this hub of the valve piece in respect to the opposing walls of the two arms 13, as shown in Fig. 1.
The rock shaft 14 is preferably tubular for lightness and may be rocked by any suitable means. As a means of actuating it, I have shown a crank arm having a screw threaded rod 36 upon which is secured an aluminum counter-weight, the action of which normally causes the valve piece to move against the stop screw 32 and in this manner bring the ports 19 and 20 into alinement. The counter-weight'37 enables the resistance of the valve piece to movement, as delicate as desired.
As it is desirable to lock the valve piece in open position when setting the valve operating mechanism in the machine to which the valve controlled motor device is applied and also when setting the stop screw 32, I provide the following simple means. 'The arms 13 and valve piece 1.5 are respectively provided with holes 33 and 34 of same diameter and in alinement when! the ports 19, 20 and 24 are in alinementullo (Fig. 1), and 35 is a pointed pin whicha may be thrust through these holes. It will be seen that a very slight oscillation of the val-ve'piece will insure supply and exhaust of the fluid pressure; and as the valve piece has fiat operating faces and also cooperates with fiat seating surfaces the construction is very simple and inexpensive and moreover, is easily adjusted to provide close working relation without undue friction.
It willnow be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction which embodiesthe features of advantage enumerated as desirable, and While I ha re in the .present instance shown and described the referred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that I do not restrict myself to the details, as the same are susceptible of modification in various particulars without departure from the spirit or scope of the invention.
Having now described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is:
1. A valve device for motors, consisting of a main frame having two relatively fixed parts providing a space between them open to the atmosphere, one of said parts having a flat seating surface and a port therethrough, an adjustable bushing held in the other part of the main frame and having a seating surface and a port insaid surface in alinement with the first mentioned port in the other part of the frame, said bushing.
extending to the outside of the frame whereby it may be adjusted when the valve is in operation, combined with a rock shaft journalled in the main frame, and a valve piece secured to the rock shaft adapted to be oscillated thereby, said valve piece unconfined and oscillating in the atmosphere and having its controlling portion made with opposite parallel surfaces of relatively small area having a transverse port extending from surface to surface adapted to come into alinement with the ports in the main frame and bushing, and also having one of its surfaces provided with an xhaust passage close to the port, whereby the valve piece oscil lates transversely to and between the port of the frame and the port of the bushing and so as to bring its transverse port and exhaust passage alternately into operative position.
2. The valve devices specified in claim 1, wherein the bushing is screw threaded so as to be adjustable to and from the valve piece, said bushing provided with an annular recess having an opening therefrom through the port end of the bushing adjacent to the valve piece, the outerend of said bushing being solid and forming a sealed end to-the bushing and port, and by which it may be adjusted.
3. The valve devices specified in. claim, 1, wherein the bushing is constructed as plug having an annular groove in its middle, a longitudinal port opening through its seating end and a lateral passage between the longitudinal port and annular groove,'and in which further the frame is provided with a port opening into the annular space of the bushing.
4. The valve devices specified in claim. 1, wherein the frame and valve piece are provided with transverse holes which comeinto alinement when the port in the valve piece is in alinement with the port in the bushing, and combined with an adjustable )in for the transverse holes for temporarily 'ocking the port, whereby the valve piece may operate for right or left hand adjustments.
6. The valve devices specified in claim 1, wherein the valve piece is provided wit-h a second exhaust passage arranged on the same face but on the opposite side of itsport, whereby the valve piece may operate for right or left hand adjustments, and in which the frame is provided with an adjustable stop which may be positioned to enable the valve piece to be stopped in its open position.
7. A. valve device for motors, consisting of a frame having transverse space open to the atmosphere and of fixed width provided at one side with a seating face having a port, combined with a rock shaft j ournaled in the frame at a distance from the port, a valve piece secured to the rock shaft and open to the atmosphere and having at its free end flat opposite parallel faces and a transverse port, opening through said faces and one of the faces also provided with a radial exhaust port groove arranged to one side of the transverse port and having a portion at the same radial distance from the axis of the rock shaft as said'transverse port, and an adjustable seat in the frame having a port carried in the frame and adjustable to and from the seating face of the frame to provide two parallel seating faces between which the valve piece is oscillated.
8v The valve devices specified in claim 8, wherein the frame and valve piece are provided with transverse holes which come into alinement when the port in the valve piece is in alinement with the ports in the seating faces, and combined with an adjustable pin for the transverse holes for temporarily locking the valve piece in open position when adjusting the same to its use.
9. A valve device for motors, consisting of a rock shaft, a valve piece secured to the shaft and adapted to be oscillated thereby saidvalve piece having its controlling portion made with opposite parallel surtaces having a transverse port extending from surface to surface and one of the surfaces provided with a radial exhaust groove close to the port, combined with a frame in which the rock shaft is ourna-led formed with two arms between Which the valve piece oscillates andone of the arms having a flat seating surface and an inlet port therethrough over Which the fiat surface of the. valve piece oscillates, and an adjustable bushing held in the other arm of the frame and having a radial outlet port and a seating end in alineinent with the inlet port but located upon the exhaust grooved face of the valve piece, whereby the valve piece oscillates between the inlet port and outlet port inthe bushing and so that said outlet port is brought alternately in alinement with the port and exhaust groove in the valve piece.

In a device of the character stated, a main frame having two arms with a space open to the atmosphere between them and said arms respectively having inlet and outlet ports in alinement, a rock shaft journaled in the arms, a valve piece exposed to atmospheric pressure secured to the rock shaft and having faces provided with ports and said valve piece arranged in the space between the arms and reciprocating transversely to the inlet and outlet ports therein for controlling the supply and exhaust of the fluid pressure, combined with means extending outside of the main frame for adjusting the inlet and outlet ports relatively apart for assembling and compensating for wear in respect to the valve piece.
