fo all ywhom t may concern.'
Be it known that li, Animer l. Moiinfics, a citizen of the United States, 'residing at liass:iic.. En the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful 1in provenients in Vegetable Cutters, of which the following is a specifican tion.
This invent-ion relates to new and useful improvements in vegetable cutters and graters, the primary object of the invention being` to provide a simple and inexpensive device which can be used in hotels and households as well as other places where vegetables `are cut oi grated for commercial purposes. f
Another important object of the invention is to provide a simple casing for enclosing the cutting element whichniay be readily taken apart foi-cleaning purposes and will provide a guard for the cutting element so as to prevent the operator from being accidentally cut by the element during the operation of the machine.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a device, all of the parts of which can be easily and readily disassein bled for cleaning purposes.
Other objects and advantages ofthe invention will. become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of the description and wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention with the cutter and its casing shown in section.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the invention.
Figure 3 is a plan of one form of cutting disk.
Figure l is a similar view of another from of cutting element.
Figure 5 is an enlarged section taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 3; and
Figure 6 is a section taken on the line 6 6 of Figure 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention7 the numeral 7 designates an attaching device in its entirety for the inven tion and which consists of a clamp 8 having a wing screw 9 associated therewith so that the device may be clamped on supports of different thicknesses. This clamp embodies a Usshaped frame 10', the bridging portion 11 of which constitutes one jaw of the clamp. The two arins of the U-shaped frame each have their upper end formed into a bearing 12, `through which is adapted to extenda horizontal. shaft 1.3. One end of this shaft is formed into a crank 14?: by which the shaft is rotated. The other end of the shaft projects beyond the arms of the Ul-'shape From this construction, it will may be connected to the shaft when desired.
'The cutting element consists of a hub section 19 having a plurality of arms 2O radiating therefrom to Join an annulus 21 which 'is provided with apertures 22 atspaced intervals therearound; rThe cutter disks 23 which may have a punched out grating sur*- face 2st-5 radiating cutting blades and slots 25, or crescent shaped cutting edges and slots 26 and each is provided with a central square aperture as isth'e hub 19 of the cutting elenient to fit upon the square portion of the wing screw 16. The disks 23 are each provided with a plurality of apertures 27 to align with those in the annulus 21 so that these two elements can be secured together by rivets, bolts or any other suitable fastenings.
The casing 28 of the device is adapted to enclose the cutting element and the wing screw for removably fastening it to the shaft 13. This casing consists of a pair of separable sections or guards, the rear guard 29 consisting of a circular plate equipped with a central aperture so that it can be received on the shaft 13 in back of the cutting element 18 and fastened by bolts and wing nuts 30 to one arm of the U-shaped frame 10. This plate 29 is provided with an outwardly extending annular flange 31 which is provided at spaced intervals with interior grooves 32 for a purpose which will be presently described. The lower end of the guard 29 is extended forwardly and slightly down-` wardly as at 33 to provide the casing with a discharge chute.
The other section of the casing consists of a plate 34C provided with an annular lange 35 which is provided with outwardly eX- tending projections 36 arranged similar to the grooves 32 in the rear guard `for cooperation therewith to retain the two guard members together. The lower end of the front guard 31k is cut away and spaced from the bottom of the chute as at 37 to permit the cut vegetables dropping ott to the chute to be delivered to a suitable receptacle placed beneat-h the chute. The front guard 34 is also provided with an opening 38 into which is :ted the vegetables to be cut or grated.
in operation, the article to be sliced or grated is inserted into the casing 28 through the opening 3S in the front. guard and held against the cutting disk. The crank 14- is then turned to rotate the cutting element so that it grates or cuts the article, the cut or grated material dropping through the cut out portion 37 onto thechute 33, from whence it is directed into a suitable receptacle placed therebeneath. h
In order to change the cutting element or to disassemble the device for cleaning purposes, the :front guard 34 is simply turned to release its projections from the grooves 32 in the rear guard, whereupon the front guard can be removed. The wing screw 16 is then removed from the shaft 13 so that the cutting element can be displaced. After the cutting element has been removed, the rear guard 49 can be slipped from the extended end of the shaft and these parts readily cleaned.
The foregoing description and the accompanying drawings have reference to the preferred or approved embodiments of my invention. It is to be understood however,
that such changes may be made in construction and arrangement of parts, materials, dimensions, etc., as may prove expedient and tall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described and illustrated my invention what I now claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A vegetable cutter comprising a casing consisting of liront and rear separable guards or sections, the rear guard having an annular flange projecting theret'roi'n, the flange at the bottom ot the guard being extended t'orwardly to provide a chute, the liront guard having an annular i'iange to lit the 'liange of the rear guard, the lower portion oit the ifront guard being spaced from the bottom of the chute and cut away to cooperate with the chute in forming a discharge opening, one guard having a feed opening adjacent the top thereof, and a cutting element mounted within the casing.
2. A vegetable cutter comprising an attaching device including a bearing, a sha-ft journalled therein, a cutting element carried by the shaft, a casing enclosing the cutting element and consisting of front and rear detachable concentrically arranged guards litting one within the other, the rear guard having a central opening to tit upon the shalt and being secured to the attac-hing device, and one guard having a feed opening therein whereby the vegetables can be pressed into engagement with the cutting element.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence ot two witnesses.
