Description

E. B. 4HILL &. E. 4VAN VALKENBURG.
Spring Bed-Bottoms. N0142,391, Patentedseptemberznavs.'
UNITED S'IAEs EGRERT R. HILL AND EDGAR vAN VALKENBURG, 0E GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
IMPRQVEMENT IN SPRING BEE-BATTOEVIS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. Hlgl, dated September 2, 1873; application filed March 7, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EGBERT B. HILL and EDGAR VAN VALKENBURG, both of the city of Grand Rapids, county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented, jointly,certai11 new and useful Improvements in Spring Bed- Bottoms 5 and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and sucient description of our invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the same are made a part of this specilication.
Our invention relates to a wire brace attached to the frame-work of an ordinary spring bed-bottom, so as to brace and hold firmly in place the upper frame, and at the saine time allow free play to the spring.
Figure l is a perspective View of the spring bed-bottom to which our invention is applied,
the bed-bottom being in an inverted position,
more clearly to show the attachment of the brace. Fig. 2 is a view of a detached brace.
In the drawings, A A represent the end pieces of the upper frame-work of the bed-bottom. B B are the yside pieces of the bottom frame. They are securely fastened to the crosspieces (l C C at some distance` from the ends of the pieces C C C, as shown in the drawings. The braces E E E E are placed at each corner of the bed-bottom, and are each constructed -of a single wire, and attached in the following manner: The wire brace is passed through the part B, and then crossed, and the ends attached to the end pieceA at some distance apart by means of screws, nails, or in any suitable manner.
The result of such an attachment at each corner of the bed-bottom is to hold the upper frame of the bed-bottom iirmly and securely in its place, and at the same time in no way to interfere with the springs of the bed-bottom.
Instead ot' using the single wire, bent as above described, the same result may be produced by using two'wires crossed in the form of the brace above described, and the ends attached to the end pieceAA and side pieceB; but the method of constructing the brace above described We deem the cheapest and best.
Ve are aware that the spring bed-bottom, as shown in the drawings, is not new, except the wire cross-brace, and We make no claim to the same.
What We do claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The cross-wire brace E, in combination with the end piece A and side bottoni piece B, when constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
EGBERT B. HILL. EDGAR VAN VALKENBURG. Witnesses:
