IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR ROLLING ROUND TAPERED BARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. .l 2,372, dated September 2, 1873; application filed July 26, 1873.
To all whom t't may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. BROWN, of Bristol, in the county `of Bristol and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machine for Rolling and Straightening Tapering Forms, of which the followin g is a specication:
My object in the present invention is tofacilitate the manufacture of spindles for factories, axles for carriages, and all other articles of tapering form; and it consists of two eccentric or cam-faced disks revolving in opposite directions on a central arbor in a suitably-constructed frame, so beveled as to roll hereinafter more fully set forth and described.

A represents the bed-plate. B is the frame which rises from thebed-plate. C is a central arbor, supported at top and bottom by the bed-plate and the frame B. D is a disk attached to the upper part of the frame. E represents the horizontal driving-shaft, which revolves in the tubular box F, with a bevelpinion, G, on its inner end. Hand Iare the main operating-disks, to which are attached the cog-Wheels J J, which engage with the pinion G. The disk H and the bevel cogwheels J may be cast in one piece. The faces of the disks H I are beveled from the center to the periphery, and are cam-shaped or eccentric from the offsets K K, and are revolved in opposite directions around the central arbor C by the revolution of the pinion G. L is a vertical guide attached to one or both sides at one revolution by reason of the beveled and eccentric surfaces of the disks. These disks are duplicates of each other, and revolve in unison. The eccentric surfaces have t-he effeet of inclined planes upon the spindle, approachin g each other in one part of their revolution, and receding from each other in an-r other part, while the spindle simply revolves and receives its form and shape from the pressure imparted by the beveled and eccentric revolvin g surfaces.
This machine is used for straightening spindles and other articles as well as forming them, and performs its Work, Whether in forming or straightening tapering forms, in the most perfeet and expeditious manner.
I do not confine myself to the precise form of the parts shown, as variations may be made in many ways without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A machine with two disks, having cam or eccentric faces revolving in opposite directions on a central arbor or spindle, and beveled in such manner as to roll or straighten a taper-spindle or other article, substantially in the manner described.
