Ee it known that JOHN M. SoHUL'rz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in a Typewriter Attachment, of which the following is a description. Y
My invention belongs to that general class of devices known as typewriter attachments, and relates particularly to an attachment to be placed on the shift key bar of typewriters to lock the bar in a positionwhereby the machine will write caps.` The same is shown as'applicable for use on Underwood typewriters to replace a small lever used on the old types of machines, thereby making the machine up to date so that a locking key may be depressed to shift and lock the machine and cause the writing of capitals, and the shift lever key on the opposite side of the machine upon being depressed will automatically release the device. The invention has among its objects thel production of a device of the kind described that is simple, convenient, durable, efficient and satisfactory for use wherever found applicable. Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled inthe art from the disclosure herein given.
To this vend my. invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

`Referring to the drawings, l represents one of the shift levers provided with an operating key 2, and 3 the other lever provided with an operating key 4t, it being understood that either one of the keys are depressed, the platen is raised or the machine so controlled that capitals will be struck in place of small letters. In the older machines, for example the old type of Underwood machines serially numbered less than' eight hundred thousand, a lever is provided for locking the shifting mechanism to print capitals,'but frequently, and in fact in many cases, thepurpose of this lever is not understood, and whenk so understood the same is inconvenient to use and is not always accurately set to perform the functions.` `My device is an attachment to be placed on machines in lieu of the lever heretofore used, which attachment will have a locking key, the use of which will be readily understood, which will serve to control the lock latch so that the same may be operated to lock the machine to print capitals and prevent its being unlocked in case of the accidental operationof the shift key ad- Iia'cent thereto, but which will permit the release of the shifting mechanism upon the operation of the shift key at the opposite side of the machine. In order that the application of the same may be understood, it may be stated that 5 represents a pin or lug on the lever l, the same arranged to coopr`and arm l0 secured thereto, and a cooperating pin l2 on the shift lever ,arm 3, and this part of the mechanism do not change. My attachment consists of a part 15 which may be tern'ied a lock bar or lever, whichy same is also formed with a hole `17 so that the same may be secured by a screw bolt l or the equivalent to the arm `l,it being necessary, however, in the type of machine referred to, to bore a hole in the lever l. lvlember provided with an` upwardly eiitending part 19" which is formed with a flange 20, having faces 2l and 22. The face 2l is arranged to cooperate with ,the face 9 and the latch 6, and the face 22 with the upperedge 26 of the latch, as will be more fully understood from the description of the operation of the device. In applying the device, the old, attachmentis removed from the machine and a hole drilled in the lever l for the screw 18,A and4 a hole preferably drilled at `25 for engagement or securing of the spring 23, and the opposite end of eachY is secured at hole 24 to the lock arm or lever l5. y l. y i

Referring to this figurdthe lever l is supported at` 28, the same being provided with an arm 29 arrangedto cooperate with arm pivotally secured at 32, the same being operatively connected so as towmanipulate the Aplaten Obviously as the shift key at either side of the machine is manipulated,

The pin 5 will be engaged by the latch 6 until key l isdepressedwVVhen lrey lis depressed, however, pin12 cooperating with the farm l0, roclrs` shaft and with it the latch 6, so that 'pin 5 is disengaged andthe shaft arm raised under thepressure of the weight of the mechanism 'and such other means as may` be provided, not ,considered necessary to `describe in, detail herein.` .ris is obvious, as soon Vasthe latch 6 is dropped out of engagement, it tends to rock member 15 on its pivotal connection 18, this movement being kpermitted as the same is only maintained in position by the leased,.flange 2O returns to the position substantially as shown in Fig. 3, so that the shift key 2 may be used until such time as key 16 is again depressed, locking the mechanism in the shifted position.
