To all whom t may conce/m Be it known that l, Grenen ll. vVlloinvnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roc rester, in thek county of ivlonroe and State of New York, have invented certain .new and useful improvements in Engraving llfachines; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilication and to the reference numerals marked thereon.
This invention has to do with engraving machines and relates more particularly to such machines of the type employing a movable tool and a plurality of forms or templets for guiding the movement of the tool7 the chief object of the invention being to provide a machine of this character with a practically constructed andV compact arranged means for holding a large number of templets in such a manner that they may be quickly and conveniently brought to operating position for guiding the tool. To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the speciiication.

rlhe embodiment of the invention herein disclosed by way of illustration of the principles involved and a preferred mode `of application thereof9 is shown as adapted for use with an engraving machine of the templet copying variety well known in the art and comprising a base l0 on' which Lis a pedestal or column 10a Figure l., the top of which has an overhanging arm l1 on the under side of which is pivotally supported as at l2 a pantographic frame f3, Figure 2, one arm or link le 'of which is elongated and provided with means for holding a copying element or stylus l5 adapted to be moved over the form or templet by means of an adjacent handle 16. The pantographic frame 13 also carries on one of its links a depending bea ing 17 in which is rotatably supported a spindle having at its lower end the engraving tool 18, lthe spindle being` provided with a pulley rotated by a belt 19 for rotating the tool. The work is supported on a .bed or table 20 which is universally ad -instable b yV means well known in the art andopcrated by handles such as that shown at 20a.
fFor supporting a templet holding means or carrier the machine is provided with an arm 2l to which is preferably secured a bracket 22 having a depending` flange 28, Figure "6, provided with an opening in which is carried Vone end of a shoulder spin die 24 held inthe opening with its shoulder against the bracket flange by means of a nut 25. ISphidle 24rhas at its outer end a head 26 and rotatably supports between its head and the bracket flange the hub E261 of the main templet carrier or drum 2 having a closed side 28 supporting a circumferential flange 29. A plate 30 secured to the circumferential flange as by means of screws 3l closes the other end ofthe drum to impart an attractive appearance and to serve functions described hereafter.
The circumference of the templet carrier or drum Qpreferably has formed therein a plurality of dove t slots 32 spaced from each other circumferentially of the drum and extendino` substantially parallel with its axis, and siidably iitted within these slots for adjustment longitudinally thereof, and so as to be removable therefrom, are a plurality of forms or templets 33 having formed therein in intaglio the characters to be engraved which Vin the present instance are shown as seriesvof numerals for marking the graduated scale of the dial Lof an indicating instrument. A plurality of short tcmplets are preferably fitted in each `slot and each bearing one character,y but of course a single templet bearing one or a plurality of characters `may be used in each slot. in adjusted `position longitudinally oi the slot by means ot locking plates 3a sliding in the slots and carrying hand screws 35 adapted to clamp the locking plates and the templets in position in the slot.
The copying stylus in the present instance is adapted for movement over a plane surface and therefore the templets have substantially plane surfaces extending parallel with the axis o the carrier or drum, and it is apparent that each teinplet or series or" templets in the different slots maybe selectively brought to position for guiding cooperation withthe copying stylus at the top oi the drum by rotating the latter' on its supporting spindle 24. rhis rotationin the present instance Vis conveniently accomplished by grasping the drum itself butof course a suitable handle may be provided for this purpose, as well as an index and scale for indicating the templet in operat-k ing position. Means are provided for yieldingly holding drum 27 in its various positions o rotary adjustment, with the selected templet under the stylus, comprising a se ries of recesses 36 with inclined sides in the end 2S of the drum, one corresponding` to each oil the templet slots. Co-acting with these recesses is the pointed end 37 ot a plunger 38 sliding longitudinally lin an opening 39 in bracket flange 23. The plunger pointv is pressed toward the end 28 of the drum for engagement with slots 36 by means oit a leai spring 4:0, Figures 5 and 7, supported on the bracket ila-nge by means ot aV screw il and having its end bearing against the outer end of the plunger, Means are provided for raising the spring to remove the pressure on the plunger so that the latter may be forced outwardly by the inclined sides of` slots 36 when the drum is rotated, compris ing a lever l2 having an end 43- engaging under spring 4:0, the lever being pivotally supported adjacent its center by trunnions del rotatably supported in ears 45 on the bracket flange 23. The lever extended upwardly and outwardly to a convenient position adjacent the copying stylus and is provided with a suitable handle ete by means of which the drum is conveniently released i'or rotation to select a'templet.
In order to conveniently increase the number or range of templets held by the main carrier or drum 27, there is provided an auxiliary templet carrier or drum contained within the main drum and arranged to bring its circumference substantially tangent with the circumference ot the mainy drum at the top ot theflatter, the circumferential flange 29 of the main drum being cut away at one et the templet carrying slots 32 thereof to afford access for the stylus to the templets in the inner or auxiliary drum. For this purpose the end 28 of the main drum preferably carries a stud l? threadedly engaged therewith, Figure @,on which is rotatably supported a hub d8 of the auxiliary drum 50 which has a circumlierential i'lange 5l provided with a plurality of dove tail slots 52 similar to those in the main drum and in which are slidably {it-ted a plurality oli teinplets 53. ln the present instance each slotot the auxiliary drum carries a plurality ot identical.v numerals each formed in intaglio, preferably in a separate templet, and the numerals ot the ten different slots in successive order about the circumference of the drum comprise the numerals l `to 9 inclusive, and 0, suitable for engraving on dials, for example, the serial factory numbers of instruments. The work is secured on its supporting bed 2O and adjusted by movement of the bed to bring the tool into proper position relativeto the first graduation on the dial to be numbered, and with the toolV rotated by its driving means l9 ,the stylus then moved to trace the numerals on the temp'let and the engraving tool engraves corresponding numerals suitably reduced in size on the Work. This operation is repeated for the different numbers to be engraved, as w10, 60,7 etc., the main drum being rotated to bring such numerals selectively kand successivelyto position for cooperation with the stylus. Similarly when it is desired to engrave the dial with the serial number of the instrument, thel main drum isV rotated to bring its point of tangency with the auxiliary drum under the stylus andl the auxiliary drum is rotated to bring the first or left hand figure forming the serial number to position under the stylus. With the Work correspondingly located, the first figure is then traced after which the auxiliary` drum is rotated to select the next figure to be engraved and so on until the serial number is completed. The main drum is released for selective rotation by means of the handle d6, and the auxiliary drum is rotated by finger piece 56 and yieldably maintained in adjusted position by spring 57 and recesses 58. While the invention has been explained for purposes of clearness as applied to one specific use, it is obviously capable of use for a variety of engraving Work requiring various characters and modifications of the templets.
The arrangement of the parts described provides an exceedingly compact and convenient construction for holding a large number of templets in readily accessible condition in a small space. The provision of the inner or auxiliary drum further increases the number and range of available templets occupying a minimum of space, and While but one such inner drum has been shown in the present instance it is to be understood that such auxiliary drum may be duplicated within the main drum if so desired to further multiply its templet carrying capacity.
l claim. as my invention:
1. rIhe combination With an engraving machine comprising a tracing element for guiding a tool, of a rotatable templet carrier having a plurality of templets arranged thereon in planes substantially parallel with its rotary axis and adapted to be brought by the rotation of the carrier selectively to position for cooperation with the tracing element.
2. The combination With an engraving machine comprising a tracing element for guiding a tool, of a rotatable drum having on its circumference a plurality of templets adapted to be brought by the rotation of the drum selectively to position for guiding cooperation with the tracing element.
3. The combination With an engraving machine comprising a tracing element for guiding a tool, of a rotatable drum, a plurality of templets on the circumference of said drum, and means for adjustablyand removably ,holding said templets in position to be brought into selective cooperation with said tracing element lby tlievrotation of said drum.
4. The combination with an engraving machine comprising a tracingelenient for guiding a tool, of a rotatable drum provided on its ycircumference with a plurality of longitudinally extending slots,.a plurality ofteniplets slidably carried in said slots and adapted to bebrought selectively to position for cooperation with said tracing ele ment by', rotation of said drum, and means for securing said templets in adjusted position in said slots.
5. The combination with an engraving machine comprising a tracing element for guiding a tool, of a drum provided on its circumference with a plurality of circumferentially spaced slots, a plurality of templets in said slots, said drum being rotatable to bring said templets selectively to position for guiding cooperation with said tracing element, and means for yieldably holding the drum in its positions of rotary adjustment.
6. The combination with an engraving machine comprising a movable tool and a tracing stylus having universal movementl over a plane surface for guiding the tool, of a drum rotatably carried by said machine, a plurality of templets removably secured on said drum in spaced relation circumferentially thereof and arranged in planes substantially parallel with its axis, said drum. being rotatable to bring said templets selectively to position for guiding cooperation with said element,and means'for yieldably holding the drum in its positions of rotary adjustment.
7. The combination With an engraving machine comprising a tracing element for guiding a tool, of a main templet carrier provided with a plurality of templets and movable to bring said templets selectively to position for cooperation with said tracing element, and an auxiliary templet cai'- rier on said main carrier provided with a plurality of templets and movable to bring its templets selectively into the locus of the templets on said main carrier.
8. The combination with an engraving machine comprising a movable tool and a tracing element for guiding the latter, of a main drum carried by said machine provided With a plurality of templets spaced from each other circumferentially thereof, an auxiliary drum; tangentially arranged Within said main drum and also provided With a plurality of templets spaced from each other circumferentially thereof, said auxiliary drum being rotatable to bring its templets selectively adjacent the point 'of tangency with the main drum and said main drum being rotatable to bring its templets and a selected templet of the auxiliary drinn selectively to )osition for cooperation with said tracing element, and means for yieldably holding each drum in its positions of rotary adjustment.
9. The combination with an engraving machine comprising a movable tool and a tracing element for guiding the latter, of a main drum carried by said machine provided with a plurality of templet holding means spaced from each other circumferentially thereof, a plurality of templets removably secured in said means, and an auxiliaiy drum, supported Within said inaiii cli-uni in substantially tangential relation thereto and also provided with a plurality of templets spaced circumterentially thereof, said auxiliary drum being rotatable to bring its templets selectively into the locus of templets on the main drum and said main drum being rotatable to bring its templets and the selected temple-,t of said auxiliary drum selectively into cooperation with said tracing element.
