The present invention relates to spark plugs for explosion engines and has for its object a spark plug comprising means for adjusting the sparking gap.
The spark plug according to this invenpoint and a stationary part havingaspiral sparking edge, the gap between said point and edge being thus adjustable at will by rotating said central rod.
This invention comprises also means for manipulating the said central rod and locking it in the desired position as well as an arrangement of the spark plug and ad acent to the sparking parts for the purpose of providing a chamber opening in the engine cylinder and passed through by the explosion gases which act to clean the sparking parts,
In the accompanying drawing, which shows by way of example some embodiments of this invention, Figure 1 is a central section of a spark plug according to this invention; with portions in elevation; Figure 2 is a bottom view of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a central section similar to Figure 1 of a modified construction; Figure a is a top view of Figure 3; Figure 5 is a transverse section on line 55 of Figure 3; and Figure 6 is a central section of another construction, with portions in elevation.
In the construction shown by Figures 1 and 2, 1 is an insulating sleeve seated in a body 2, having a screw threaded portion 2 for engagement in the'cylinder hole. Said sleeve 1 is fastened in the body 2 by means of a screw threaded ring 3 and gas-tight joints are ensured by washers 1213.
Centrally in the sleeve 1 is located a rotatable rod-4t having at one end a, radial sparking point 5; at its opposite end said rod is screw threaded to receive a nut 6' for clamping the current feeding wire and a split pin 16 adapted to engage a connecting sleeve or socketfastened on the end of a feeding conductor as used in a number of cases.

the engine cylinder and the rod 4; is connected with the ignition current distributor, the operation is the usual one because when e feeding circuit is closed the spark jumps the gap between the point 5 and the portion of the edge 7 facing it.
Should it be required to modify the gap between the sparking parts, it is sufficient to rotate the central rod 4, the sparking point 5 being thus carried in front of other portions of the edge 7 which leave diflierent gaps owing to the spiral contour of said edge.
The construction 3 l--5 is similar to the above described one, but for making easy the manipulation of the rod 4c this rod carries a proecting arm 9 adapted to resiliently engage a row of teethlO (Figure 4) provided in ring 11 secured to the sleeve 1; Said ring 11 may be provided with a stop projection 10 engaging said arm 9 just before the sparking point 5 contacts with the radial portion of the spiral edge 7.
Figure 3 shows 1 of the arm 9; in this construction said arm 9 is carried by a disk the rod 4 but free to move longitudinally along it, by means of square section portions on both parts, and a spring 15 is located between said disk 8 and the connecting pin 16 for resiliently holding the arm 9 in engagement with the teeth of the ring 11 and the rod 1 locked against rotation.
Said connecting pin 16 is preferably provided with manipulating wings 14: for screwing it down on the rod 4 and looking all the parts in the adjusted position.
In this construction for adjusting the sparking gap the pin 16 is unscrewed to release the arm 9 and the arm 9 is operated to rotate the rod 1 and to carry said shown by Figures a preferred arrangement 8 fixed to rotate with 2 is provided in its portion projecting into the engine cylinder with a row of radial orifices 17 located above the sparking parts 5-7 this causes an amount of gas to pass at each explosion with high velocity through the gap between said parts 5-7. Thus the electrodes or sparkin parts 5-7 are kept clean. I
In the spark plug according to this invention the gap between the electrodes may be adjusted at will for the purpose of modifying the character ofthe spark and the time at which it jumps, as required for obtaining the best efiiciency under different conditions of operation depending upon the nature of the engine, ignition magneto, carburetter and also of the fuel, as well as upon the value of the compression in the engine cylinder.
What I claim and desire to secure by U. S. Letters Patent is 1. A spark plug comprising a body having a sleeve provided with means for mountingin the engine cylinder, an insulating part in said body, a rotatable rod passing through said insulating part and having means for connection with the current feeding conductor, an inwardly projecting flange on the end of said sleeve, the edge or this flange being spiral shaped, a radial point on said rod in register with said flange the edge and point forming an adjustable sparking gap, a inanipliilating arm fixed to rotate with said rod, projections adapted to be engaged by said arm, means resiliently holding said arm engaged with said projections, and means for locking said arm and rod in adjusted position.
2. A spark plug comprising a body hav ing a sleeveprovided with means for mounting in the engine cylinder, an insulating part in said body, a rotatable rod passing through said insulating part and having means for connection with the current feed ing conductor, an inwardly projecting flange on the end of said sleeve, the edge of this flange being spiral-shaped, a radial point on said rod in register with said flange, the edge and point providing a sparking gap, a manipulating arm fixed to rotate with said rod, and a stop engaging said arm and rod to prevent said sparking point from contacting with said spiral shaped edge.
