Be it known that I, JOSEPH F. BENOIT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Sanford, county of York, State of Maine, have invented an Improvement in lVire Motions for Looms, of which the following To all whomit description, inconnection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts in each of theseveral views.
This invention relates to looms and more particularly to an Timprovemei'it in operating devices for handling and drawing out the cutting wires in a plush or like loom. In accordance with usual practice, wires or thin rods bearing cutters at their outer ends are inserted and beaten in to the fabric at intervals to be then drawn out to cut the warp and produce theplush or velvety effect. It is important thatthe operating device for moving these wires be equipped for a relatively rapid movement in one direction to insert the wires, and for a relatively slow movementin the opposite direction to draw out the wires for the cutting operation, and at the same time that the movement, particularly the drawing out movement be an even regular one. Devices for actuating the carriage which inserts and draws out the wires, iitherto so far as known to me have involved the use of a swinging lever with a link connection to the wire engaging carriage, which in the relatively long throw of said carriage, was required to travel over a center and thus imparting a jerking movement to the carriage tending to jerk and jar the wire and hence reducing the speed at which it is practicable to operate the mechanism. The principal object of the present invention is to provide operating means for the wire actuating carriage adapted to operate the same with a smooth even motion throughout, in each direction and without jerks or sudden changes of speed. To this end I provide in the actuating means for the wire carriage a telescopic pivoted bar or lever which is directly engaged by a crank of the driving train and which directly engages and operates the carriage. The invention will be better understood from the following detailed description, and the distinctive features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claims.

indicates a portion of the framework of a loom equipped, with a usual lay 11 and co-operative mechanism for handling the warp W, and producing the fabric F. 12 indicates the wire guide, pivoted at its rear end in usual manner (not shown) and serving to guide the cutting wires into position for beating up. 18 indicates the carriage for inserting and removing the wires, mounted as usual for sliding movement upon a guide rail 14:. 15 indicates the magazine at the end of the loom proper, in which the heads at the ends of the cutting wires are located while they are beaten into the fabric. At this point it is to be understood that these cutting wires are in practice inserted at intervals, say about every fourth stroke, and there are, usually three of them in the fabric at once spaced apart as stated, as indicated at W" the ones in advance being successively drawn out as another is inserted. The carriage 13 is equipped with usual means indicated generally at 16 for pressing these wires into operative position, and also with a hook or catch 16 for engaging the head on the wire to draw out the same, all in accordance with known and usual practice. 17 indicates a portion of the driving gearing for the loom equipped with a main drive pulley 18 and actuating through beveled gears 19, a transverse shaft 20. The bevel gears. 19 are preferably of a skew bevel type adapted to impart a variable movement to the shaft 20 and being a factor in providing the respective quick and slow movement of the carriage 13 in the opposite directions of its travel. The shaft 20 has fixed thereon a crank 21 which may be in two parts equipped with relative adjustment as indicated at 21 to vary the throw imparted thereby. This crank is equipped at its end with a pivot block 22 slidingly fitted on the connecting bar or lever 23. This connectin bar 23 is pivoted at the base of the frame at 24, the pivot 24 being'preferably and as shown borne by a. projection 25 depending from the frame so as to have this pivot point as low as possible. In accordance with my invention the connecting bar or lever 23 is made in two telescopic and relatively sildable parts 23, 23*, the lower part 23 being shown as mounted on the pivot 24 and providing a channel in which the part 23 is slidingly fitted. The upper extremity of the part 23 is preferably equipped with antifriction rollers 26, which insure the free sliding of the parts with respect to each other. This result may be further obtained by providing a bronze or a like washer or wear piece 27 at the lower end of the part 23 the part 23 having a fairly loose fit in the channel of the part'23, so that the frictional area is limited to the rollers 26 and the wear piece 27. Y The rollers 26 are preferably mounted in bearings provided therefor in lugs 28 at the top of the bar part 23 these lugs for this purpose having slightly elongated slots 28 receiving the pivots of the rollers. While the twotelescopic parts 23, 23 of the bar may be relatively arranged and assembled in different ways, I preferably and as shown,
make the part 23 as a U-shaped channel bar with a cover member 29 secured thereto and completing the channel for the bar part 23 The bar part 23 is pivoted directly to the carriage 13 as indicated at'30, so that the movement of the crank 21 is thus imparted directly to the carriage through this connecting bar with a faster rate in one direction, as the crank is near the pivot 24:, and a slower rate in the other direction for withdrawing the wires, as the crank is more remote from the pivot 2d and near the point 30. The movement thusimpartedto the carriage 13 and hence tothe wires is 'of va smooth,-relatively even and continuous character free from jerks and sudden loom, and operating mechanism therefor embodying a pivoted lever composed of two parts, telescopic with respect to each other, one of said parts directly engaging said carriage. and the other part having an actuating crank engaged therewith.
2. Apparatus of the kind described comprising a carriage mounted for operative movement to engage wires of a-loom, and
operating means for said carriage embody ,ing a lever composed of two parts, one pivoted to said carriage and slidingly fitted in the other part, the other lever part mounted on a relatively fixed 'pivot and having an operating arm engaging the-same.
