UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
ROBERT STEEL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF HIS RIGHT TO JOHN S. RICHARDS AND HENRY S. RICHARDS, OF
. SAME PLACE.
Spcciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,179, dated August 26, 1873 application filed July 16, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ROBERT STEEL, of Philadelphia, in the coun ty of Philadel phia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Street and other Railway Rails; 'and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in the construction of street and other railroad In the drawings, Figure l represents a side view of my improved rail with portions of the ends shown in section 5 Fig. 2, a perspective view of the same.
My invention consists in Welding to the ends of the ordinary street-railway rail, A, a piece, B, made with the fiber of the metal running at right angles to the web of the main rail A. By this means the rail is prevented from splitting or spreading longitudinally by the tread of the car-wheels.
I have described my invention as only applied to street-railway rails, but I do not limit myself to this particular, as all and every description of rails can be strengthened in the same manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim asnew, and desire to secure Letters Patent for, is
A street or other railway rail having Welded to the ends thereof pieces of metal, the liber of which is at right angles to that of the rail.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of July, 1873.
ROBERT STEEL. Witnesses;
L. HOERMEE, G. WEBER.
