JULIUS WOLFSON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 4, 1922.
Application filed January 29, 1919. Serial No. 273,743.
. To all whom it may concern:
ful Electrically-Operated Valve of a Gas Burner or Gas Supply, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of the valve of a gas burner (-or other gas supplied device) which is adapted to be operated by electrlc means so asto turn on or cut off thesupply of gas to and from said burner, said means including push buttons, electromagnets, and
armatures connected with the valve and adapted to be attracted in opposite directions by said magnets which may be energized and de-energized by the action of said buttons, thus imparting motions in opposlte d1- rections to said armatures and consequently operating said valve in opposite directions.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described, as long as they are within the spirit or scope of the claim.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of an electrically operated valve of a gas burner embodying m invention, the valve proper being shown in vertical section;
Figure 2 represents a side elevation at a ri ht angle to Figure 1. 1
igure 3 represents a top or plan view thereof.
Figure 4 represents a perspective view of detached members of the device.
Figure 5 represents a erspective view of another embodiment of t e invention.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corres onding parts in the figures.
l eferring to the drawings.
1 designates a gas burner, and 2 designates the plug of the valve of said burner, said plug being rotatable and which excepting the features of my invention applied thereto is of well known construction and operation.
Connected with the opposite ends of said plug are the arms 3 on the outer terminals of which are the carriers 4 for the toothed sectors 5 with which mesh the toothed heads 6, the latter being pivotally mounted as as 7 on the bars 8 which are secured to an adjacent portionof the gas conveying pipe 9.
Depending from and secured to the heads 6 are the armature carrying arms 10 whose terminals are in the paths of the cores 11 of the electro-magnets 12, the latter being two in number and supported by the barsl3 on opposite sides of the pipe 9, so that the armature carrying arms 10 may be separately attracted by said magnets, said bars 13 being properly secured to said pipe 9.
14 designatespush buttons which are suitably mounted on a wall or elsewhere and are in electric communication with the magnets 12 by the electric conductors l5 and batteries 16, said buttons being so constructed that when one button is operated it will energize one of the magnets, while the other button disconnects thecurrent from the other magnet, consequently, the latter named magnet is de-energized for the time being.
Referring to Figures 1, 2, and 3, the gas valve is open and the gas is supposedly flowing through the-bore of the plug 2 of said valve to the burner, this havin been occasioned by pressing the proper pus but ton whereby an armature carrying arm, the one on the right of Figure 2, has been attracted by the magnet thereat, said arm in its movement to the magnet having partly rotated the head 6 acting as a lever, whereby the sector 5 has been correspondingly rotated and hence the plug previously in the closed position of the valve has been rotated in the direction whereby its port has been placed in communication with the gas burner and so the latter is supplied with gas, this being most plainly evident on reference to Fi re 1.
hen the gas is to be cut ofl? from the burner, the other push button is operated, hence the magnet say at the left of Figure 2 is energized, while the one at the right of said figure is de-energized, consequently the magnet at the left of Figure2 attracts the armature carrying arm 10 shown dotted in Figure 2 and draws it as a lever to its magnet when the head 6 and sector 5 are so rotated that the plug of the valve receives rotation in opposite direction to that first named, saya uarter turn in its seat causing the port of t e plug to becovered b the adjacent solid portions of said seat an so closed whereby the gas is cut off from the burner.
Owing to the gearing provided by the toothed sector and toothed head, the armature-carrying arms are enabled to easily op erate the plug of the valve while'said plug is I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- 20 held sufficiently gas tight in its seat in the valve casing.
In Figure 5, I show the magnets located I end to end adjacent to each other on comparatively the same side of the gas pipe 9. In
this case a single toothed sector is employed on the plug of the valve, the same being at oneend thereof and so a single toothed head intermeshes with said sector, and a single armature carrying arm on said head is employed, said arm being adapted to be attracted alternately by the two magnets.
The carriers 40f the toothed sectors 5 may act as finger pieces to turn the plug 2 byhand to turn on or cut off the gas without the electric action especially if the latter is rendered inoperative.
Having thus described my invention What ters Patent, is
A rotary gas valve of the character stated comprising oscillatory gears one connected with each end of theplug of the valve, pivotally mounted gears meshing therewith, a support attachable to the supply pip'e, horizontal magnets supported thereby, armatures for said magnets movable with the last named gears and means carrying said armatures and connected with said last-named gears, said means being extended in substantially opposite directions and the magnets being disposed upon opposite sides of
