Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 27, 1922.
Application filed June 16, 1921. Serial No. 178,067.
Closing Mechanism, of which th'e'followin'g is a specification.
This inv'entionrelates to gates, and the primary object of'the invention is to provide an improved and novel means for opening and closing gates at points remote therefrom, whereby persons in vehicles approaching or leaving the gates, can open or close the same, without the necessity of getting out of the vehicle;
Another object of the invention is the provision of a novel means for'supporting the gate, to permit the sameto'be readily opened and closed, and toxpermit'the same to be raised and adjusted in relation to the ground or road way, so as. to overcome any sagging in the gate, or tolift'the same over obstructions in the roadway.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel (iperating device for gates comprising means arranged laterally on each side of the gate, and means arranged forwardly or rearwardly of the gate, whereby the gate can be conve'niently used on cross roads and the like; i
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved gate operating mechanism of the above character, 4 which will be durable and efficient in use, one that will be simple and easy to manufacture, and
one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost. I
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction,
' arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming apart of this specification, and in which drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of theimproved gate and operating means therefor, the gate beingshown in partly opened position.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary detail perspective view of one of the supporting uprights for the gate.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical section through one of the supporting posts or up: rights for the gate illustrating themeans for attaching the operating ropes."
Figure 4C is a similar view showing the means of associating the supporting rollers therewith.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary side elevation of one of the standards for carrying the operating ropes. V.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary side elevation of the shears utilized for supporting the supporting rod for the gate.
Referring to the drawings in detail,
wherein similar reference characters desig nate corresponding I parts throughout the several views, the letter A indicates the gate; B, the gate carrier; and C, the operating device for the gate.
The gate A can be of any preferredconstruction, and is adapted to slide trans-- versely across the roadway D, which is shown branching off from a main roadway E. This gate is adapted to normally close an opening in the enclosing fence F, which as shown includesend posts 10, one of which can be provided with a suitable guide 11 for the gate A. r
As shown the gate A includes end posts 12 connected by panels 13, but as heretobefore stated, the gate can be constructed in any 12, if so desired. While the uprights 14 can I be of any desired construction or formation, the same have been shown solid and pro vided with the vertically extending aligned slots 15.
The gate carrier or supporting means B comprises a pair of shears l6 and a pair of shears'17, and theseshears are located on the opposite sides of the roadway. Each of the shears include a pair of. legs 18 which are pivotally connected adjacent to their upper ends by means of a pivot pin or bolt 19. These pairs of shears 16 and 17 are adapted to support the rod or supporting cable 19, which is adapted to extend transversely across the roadway D above the gate A and is extended through the slots 15 formed in the uprights 14. The opposite ends of the spaced transversely extending openings 21,
certain of whichoare adapted to receive suitable removable bolts 22, which support rollers 23 which are adapted to engage the sup:
necessary to move the lower portions of the legs 18 of the shears closer together, which will effectively raise the supporting rod or cable 19. The upper ends ofthe uprights 14 are braced by an upper beam'24, the terminals of which .are'also extended in the side portion 15 of the uprights, and these terminals can be held infplace by means of or on horse back.
The operating means C for the gate A includes a plurality of pull ropes, and these ropes are so disposed as to permit the gate A'to be operated atv either side of the gate, laterally thereof, or rearwardly of the gate, as clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawings.
Thus it can be seen that the gate A can be operated from three different points. Standards 27 and 28 are arranged on each side of the gate laterally thereof, anda standard 29 is arranged rearwardly of the gate. The standards are disposed a suflieient dis tance from the gate to permit the gate to be conveniently operated by persons in vehicles Each of the standards 27, 28, and 29 is provided with an outwardly extending arm 30, which is suitably braced in order to prevent sagging thereof. The standard 27 is provided with a pair of guide pulleys 81 and 32, the standard 28 with a pair of guide pulleys 33 and 34, and the standard 29 to a pair of guide pulleys 35 and 36. An intermediate standard 37 is arranged at one side of the gate opening and between the standard 27 and 28, and this standard can be secured to one of the gate posts 10 or form a continuation thereof. This post is also provided with a laterally extending arm 38, to which is secured a triple block 39. The upper end of one leg 18 of the shears 16 is provided with a pair of pulleys 40 and 41, while the upper end of the oppositeleg is provided with a pair of pulleys 42 and 4 3. In order to open and close the gate I fromthe left-handsideof the read, an ad jus ble rare 4 p ov ded. which is trained amen he P} 1l y- .l ,;a ,oun 11 e lower P111- ley 41, around one of the pulleys of the triple block 39 carried by the intermediate standard 37, and then back and secured to the bolt 25, which is arranged at the upper end of the standard 14 at the forward end thereof. It can be seen that by giving this rope 44 a downward pull, the gate will he slid rearwardly on' the cable or rod 19. When it is desired to close the gate from the left hand side, the rope 45 is pulled, which will be trained around the pulley 32, around the upper pulley 40, and then extended directly to the bolt 25 at the forward end of the gate. Thus it can be seen that a pull upon this rope 45 will move the gate to its closed position. i
In order to permit the gate to be operated from the right hand side thereof, a pair of cables 46 and 47 are provided. The cable 46 is trained around the inner pulley 33, around the pulley 48 carried by one of the legs 18 of the shears 17, around pulleys of the triple block 29 and then back to the bolt 25 carried by the upright 14 at the rear end of the gate. It can be seen that when a pull is exerted on the rope 46, the gate will be slidto its'closed position. The rope 47 is trained around the pulley 34, around an upper pulley 49 carried by one of the legs 18 of the shears 17, and secured directly to the bolt 25 of the upright 14 arranged in the rear end of the gate A. It can be seen that when a pull is exerted on the rope 47, that a direct rearward pull will be given to the gate thus pulling the same to its open position.
In order to prevent opening and closing of the gate from a point rearwardly thereof, pulling ropes 50 and 51 are provided. The rope 50 is trained around the pulley 35, around the lower pulley 43 carried by one of the legs, of the shears 16 and extended directly to the bolt 25 carried by the upright 14 arranged in the forward end of the gate. Thus it can be seen that when the rope 50 is pulled, a direct forward pull will be given to the gate, which will move the same into closed position. I The rope 51 is trained around the pulley 36, around the upper pulley 42 carried. by one of the legs of the shears 16 and thence around one of the pulleys of the triple pulley 39, and then back toward the forward end of the gate, and secured to the bolt 25 earriedby the post 14 arranged at the front end of the gate. It can be seen that when a pull is exerted on the rope 51, that a rearward pull will be exerted on the gate, which will move the gate to its open position.
From the foregoing description, it can be seen that a novel gate has been provided, whichcan be opened or closed at three different points in a convenient andexpeditious manner, and which can be easily raised or lowered without undue difficulty to permit the same to ride over obstructions in the path thereof, such as stones, snow or the like.
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of this invention; but,
I claim:
