Be it known that l, JOHN J. HOGAN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of St. Louis and State of lvfissouri, have invented certain new and useful improvements in a. Detachable erm for Reclining Chairs, of which the following is a specification. y
The primary object of this invention is to provide an improved detachable arm for reclining chairs which can be quickly removed so that the seating cushion thereof can be mounted sidewise.
Another object of the invention is in providing improved releasable means to the detachable arm. I
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the arm can be released and swung to an inactive position.
)ther and further objects will appear in the specification and be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, exemplifying the invention, and in which Fig. 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a portion of a reclining chair, showing this improved arm attachment applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged View of fragmentary disconnected portions of parts that are respectively borne by the arm and chairback rest and co operable with one another.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged, fragmentary, vertical section taken on the line lll-111 of Fig. 1.

With reference to the accompanying drawings, the seatinfr portion 1 of the reclining chair is mounted on a frame 2, which is supported by the legs 3, and secured to said frame rearwardly thereof is a pair of opposed side plates 4c, each being provided with a bearing 5 for the reception of a pivot 6.
Extended upwardly from each pivot 6 is a bracket 7 each bracket being secured to the side members of the back-rest 8 by screws, such as 9, each of said brackets having an extending portion 10.
Formed in the extending portion 10 is an angular recess 11, and extended from said portion 10 adjacent said recess is a pin 12.
For co-operation with the extending portion 10 of the bracket 7 is an arm-rest 13, and depended from said arm adjacent one end thereof is a bracket 14: and pivotally se cured at 15 to said bracket 14 is a clamping member 16 having a recess 17 formed in its extending end,v and extended fromk said menu ber 16` between the pivot y'15 andy recess 17 is a stop pin 18. l
Dependcd from the opposite `end of the armrest 13 is a. lug 19 and pivotally secured at 2O to said lug is a swingable member 21, the "lower end of said member being bifurcated as designated at 22, and pivotally se'- cured adjacent said bifurcation 22,` and'to the member 21 is a spring actuated hook shaped member having a finger engaging portion 2d, and mounted over said hook shaped member 23 is a cover plate 25.
T ie hook shaped member 28 and thebifur-` cated end 22 ofthe member 21 is adapted to beengaged over a pin 2G which is horizontally extended from a block 27, said block being secured vtovone of the side members28 of the frame 2.
lVhile Fig. 1 of the drawings disclose only one arm-rest 13 and parts relatable thereto, it is to be understood that a reclining chair to which this arm attachment is to be secured will be provided with a pair of such arms, the main object of the invention being to provide a quick detachable arm which can be readily removed if it becomes necessary to repose a patient or occupant upon the seating cushion 1 sidewise thereof.
In mounting this improved arm attachment to the position shown in Fig. 1, the clamping member 16 is lirst engaged and the recess 17 thereof is mounted over the pin 12 of the extending portion 10 of the bracket 7 which is secured to the back-rest 8. The pin 29 which is borne by the clamping member 1G is'then engaged within the recess 11 of the extending portion 10 of the bracket 7, said members 16 being then pulled forwardly within the seating portion 30 of said recess 11 and the turnable locking member 31 which is pivoted at 32 to the bracket 7 is turned to a position of abutment against the shouldered end 33 of the member 16, thereby affecting a lock on said member 16 so that it will be held in extended position from the bracket 7. The swingable member 21, which is borne by the lug 19 is lowered after the clamping member 16 has been secured and the jaws 34 provided by the bifurcation 22 of said member 21 are engaged astride of the pin 26 of the block 27 which is secured to the side member 28 of the frame 2, the descent of said member forcing the lower end of the hook shaped member 23 to one side as said member 23 is engaged on thepin 2G, the spring 35 oli' the member 23 returning said member to a closed position relative to the pin 26 after the hook end ot said member 23 has passed over said pin, said hook memberI 23 securing the member 21 in position.
When it is desired to provide sidewise access to the seating portion 1 of the chair, the hand engaging portion 24 of the hook member 23 is manipulated in the direction towards releasing the lower portion of said member from underengagement with the pin 26, and the swingable member 21 is elevated, thereby lifting the arm rest 13 and swinging said arm rest on the pivot 15 to a position rearwardly until the bracket 14 of said arm rest abuts against the stop pin 18 of the clamping member 6, the swingable member 21 also being moved rearwardly, as shown in Fig. 1.
In returning the arm rest 13 to a position of use, the swingable member 21 is engaged and moved downwardly, and the jaws 34 off the bifurcated end thereof are engaged as tride of the pin 26 of the frame 2, the downwardly moving weight ol' said swingable member forcing the hook member 23 over the pin 26.
In removing the clamping member 16 from its att-ached position with the back-rest 3, the member 31 is swung from abutment with the shouldered end 33 of the bracket 7, thereby allowing the clamping member 16 to be moved rearwardly so that said member 16 can be swung on the pin 12 so as to allow the pin 29 of the member 16 to be removed from the angular slot 11, and in which the recessed end of said member 16 will be withdrawn from engagement with the pin 12.

1. in a. reclining chair, a back-rest, and a seat portion therefor, an arm-rest, a bracket portion borne by said back-rest provided with an angular recess, a member 'to which one end oi' said arm-rest is secured bearing a recess, each of said recesses adapted to engage a respective pin which is borne by said bracket and said member.
2. ln a reclining chair, a back-rest, and a seat portion therefor, an arm-rest, a bracket portion borne by said backrest provided with an angular recess, a member to which one end of said arm-rest is secured bearing a recess, each ot said rei'esses adapted to engage a respective pin which is borne by said bracket and said member, and there being a depending member swingingly secured to the opposite end or' said arm-rest iiiearing locking means at its lower end for locking engagement with means located adjacent said seating portion.
