BINDING- POST.
T0 all w 7mm z mag concem Be it known that I, OSCAR A. SMITI-I, a citizen 0f the United States. residing at Cleveland, in Che county 0f Cuyahoga and Stute 0f Ohio, have invented certain new und usefu1 Improvemehts in Binding Post-s, of which the foilowing is a Speoification.
Thie invention relates to binding posts adapted f0r use with the carb0ng of batteries and t0 the method of making the Same, the object 0f the invention being to provide an improved binding post adapted for the attachrnent 0f eiectrical 001'1ductors 01" wires t0 the calbon 0f a battery.
I am aware of the patent t0 E. C. Henn, 813,093 0f February 20, 1903 in which the post is provided with a circuiar series 0f longitudinally extending ribs located ai'ou1ld the shank of the p0st but in practice I found that these posts frequently tend t0 split the carbon, hzwing had eonsidemble t0 do with the making of the post described in seid patent and also found that they were expensive to make.
In the drawings accompenying and forming a art of this specification, Fig. 1 illustrates a. piece oi. stock cut to the desired 1ength t0 form the post; Fig. 2 illustrates the stock threaded at one end for the reception 01 the terminal nut; Fig. 3 illustrates the punched washer in position ngains: the thread; Figs. 1 and 5 illustrate forme 0f dies which may be used in forming this p0st; Fig. 6 illustrates zu completed post inserted in one end 0f a carbon Tod; Fig. 7 illustrates the punched washer; and F 8 is 21 perspective view 0f the compieted p0st.
Simiiar characters 0f reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures 0f the drawings.
The stock 2 cut 130 the desired size is pro vided at one end with a suita.bie threa.d for the reeepeion 0f the terminal nut and upon this post is siipped a suitable punched washer 4-. The post is then p1aced between a pair of meeting dies 5 and 6, euch pro vided with a substantially semi-circuiar recess 7, formed to fit the curved surfaee of the stoek, one portion of which however is 0I" maller radius (see dotted lines 8), t0 stamvg and form the metal and which portion of smaller 1adius terminates in a beveled portion 9 frming a V-shaped recess 10 when the die members are broi1ght 15 0- Specification 0f Letters Patent. Patqgntd Jung 27, Applic ation fi1ed August 2, 1919.

gether. By thismeans, when the bii1ding p0st is plaeed between the meeting dies and pressure exerted 011 the post through the dies e fin 9 is formed at one side thereof, which is suflicient t0 prevent the turning of the post within the carbon while ab the same time the post may be forced into a suitable drilied opening of the carbon without the liability of splitting the carbon as heretofore, especiallyes this fin is of a, V- shaped formation and therefore foimed with a reiatively sharp cutting edge as it were, 0Willg tothe V-shaped recess 10 0f the dies so that it tends to cut its Way into the carbon and thus prevents the splitting thereof.
That part of euch die member having the smaller radius 01 bui1t 011 portion 8, may have this graduaily formed and extending over about 90 0f each member if preferred.
It Will be observed that as hereinbefore stated. the provision 0f the threads form a shoulder for the punched washer 130 rest against while the longitudinally extehding projection 9 al so forms) a shoulder aga.inst the washer after the same is in p1ace toprevent tbe dislocation thereof.
The various details may be more 01 lese changed without departing from the spirit or scope 0f this invention.
I c]aim es my invention:
l. A binding post having a Vshaped I'ib extending along one side on1y thereof.
2. A binding post hewing a single projection extending along the side thereof.
3. A binding post having a single projection extending along the side thereof, seid 1'ib having a V-shaped formation.
4. A binding post having a threaded end, a washer thereon, und a V-shaped rib located along one side only thereof between the end 0f the post and seid washer.
5. A binding post having a threaded end, the major portion of seid post having a smooth surface, seid p0st having' a longi tudinally extending rib ab one side thereof.
6. A binding post having a threaded end, the major portion of said post having a smooth surface, seid post having alongitudinally extending rib a.t one side thereof y adapfed to be forced thereinto und having a projecting end provided with conductor attaching means and having the end projecting into said 10d provided with a single projecaion 0:. rib extending along 0ne side thereof.
8. A battery ce11 element consisting 01. a 1'0d 0f nonmetallic substance having a bore in its outer end portion, a binding post adapted to be forced thereinto und havinp; n projecting end provided wish couductor attaching means and having the end projecting into said 10d p1ovided with a single p10j ection 01 1ib extending 2L1011g one side thereof, said rib having a V-shaped formation.
9. A battery ce11 element consisting 0f a 10d 0f nonmetallic substance having a bore in its outer end portion, a binding post adapoed t0 be force. thereinto and having a projecting end prqvided with conductor attaching means and having the end projecting int0 said .rod provided with a sing1e projection or rib extending along one side thereof, said r'1b having a Vshaped formati0n and extending throughout the length of filmt art of the ost which projects into said 10d.
Signed at Cleveland county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, this 80th day 015 Ju1y, 1919.
