CHURN. 7

p i on filed e embe 10, -192o. -seri 1 lip-s wn.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, TIMOTHY FLonv a citizen of the United States, residing at Dunkirk, in the county of Hardin and State of Ohio. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Churn, of which the following .is a specification.

This invention relates to churnattachments for milk cans and more particularly to the closures thereof.

The object of the invention is a milk can lid or closure equipped with this improved attachment which closure is interchangeable with the lid ordinarily used so that the can may be used either as a shipping or storage can or as a churn simply by removing one lid and substituting another.

Another object is to provide an attachment of this character so constructed that it may be adjusted for use in connection with cans of varying sizes, the mouths of which are of uniform size.

l/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and specifically pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawing:

Figure 1 represents a central vertical section of a milk can equipped with a closure embodying this invention.

Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the closure detached; and,

Fig. is a side elevation of the closure with the dasher rod shown broken off for convenience in illustration.

In the embodiment illustrated, a milk shipping or storage can C of usual construction is shown having the ordinary neck N and flared mouth M. This can is usually equipped with a hollow closure such as that shown at 1 which fits in the neck and mouth of the can and includes top and bottom walls 2 and 3 respectively. The attachment constituting this invention is mounted on and carried by such a closure, the top and bottom walls 2 and 3 of which have registering apertures for the passage therethrough of a churn dasher rod 4. This rod is rotatable in said apertures and carries at its lower portion dasher blades 4 which may be of any desired construction four being here shown arranged at different angles.

The dasher rod 4 may be of any suitable or desired length and is designed to be adjustable on the closure to adapt it for use to provide withmilk cans of different sizes the mouths and necks of which are ordinarily of uni-' form size. As shown the rod 4 is slidably mounted in a rotatable block or hearing 5 which turns in a block 6 fixedly secured to brackets 7 which rise from the outer face of the top 2 of closure 1 and converge toward the center thereof. The converging ends of these brackets are here shown riveted to block-6 although obviously they may be attached thereto in any other desired manner.

A small bevel gear 8 is mounted on the dasher rod 4 above the top 2 of the closure and as shown has an integral collar 9 for spacing thegear from the closure and which is fixedly mounted on the rod in any desired manner. As shown the collar 9 and gear 8 have an angular bore extending therethrough conforming in shape to the cross sectional contour of rod 4 which permits the rod to slide through theseimembers and to turn therewith. To provide for the adjustment of the rod for use in different sized cans a set screw 9 may be used extending through collar 9 and grippingly engaging the rod 4. v

A large bevel gear 10 meshes with gear 8 and is carried by a horizontally disposed shaft 11 mounted at one end in block 6 and supported intermediate its ends by a bearing 12 carried by a standard 13 rising from top 2 of closure 1. This shaft 11 is equipped at its outer end with a crank handle 14 for actuating the dasher it being obvious that when the standard is turned the intermeshing gears 10 and. 8 will be correspondingly turned and thereby rotate the dasher rod 4.

From the above description it will beobvious that a closure 1 equipped with this improved churn attachment'may be readily substituted for the closure ordinarily used or spaced top and bottom members centrally apertured to form bearings, a dasher having a rod extending through said apertures, a block slidably mounted on said rod but having driving engagement therewith, brackets carried by said closure, a bearing supported by said brackets in alinement with the apertures in said closure and in which said rod carried block is mounted to rotate, said block and bearing having interlocking elements to prevent the longitudinal movement of the block in the bearing, a gear on said rod outside said closure having a spacing collar between it and the closure, a shaft supported by said brackets and a gear. on said shaft meshing with the rod carried gear.

In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature hereto.

TIMOTHY FLOR Y.
