PIE-PLATE ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JULIA BAKKEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Northwood, in the county of Grand Forks and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pie- Plate Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for the plates in which pies are baked; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side View of a pie plate provided with an attachment according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view of a portion of the attachment showing the corrugated flange.
The pie plate 4 is of any approved form, and it has a flange or rim 5 on which the outer portion 6 of the crust of the pie rests, and which also supports the corresponding portion 7 of the upper crust, when the pie has an upper crust. In order to prevent juice from escaping out of the pie while be ing baked, and also to support and protect the pie after being baked, an attachment 8 is provided. This attachment is in the form of a ring having a flange 9 at its lower part, similar to the flange 5 of the pie plate. The ring-shaped attachment projects upwardly from its flange 9, and it has a series of lugs 10 at its top. Four lugs areshown, but three lugs, or more than four lugs can be provided.
The flange 9 is preferably corrugated in an ornamental manner to stiffen it, and also to ornament the pie in the usual manner, but it may be plain if desired.
Clamps 12 are pivoted to the flange 9, and project below the flange of the pie plate. These clamps may be of different widths, and the smaller clamps are used when the pie has no upper crust, and when there is less thickness of crust between the flanges.
The flange 9 has a downwardly project- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J ne 20 1922 Application filed December 16, 1921.

ing cutting edge 14 at its periphery which engages wlth the rim of the pie plate.
The pie is formed in the pie plate in the usual manner, and the attachment is then clamped over it, as shown in Fig. 1. The corrugated flange of the attachment ornaments the pie crust when pressed upon it. The pie is then baked, and the attachment prevents juice from leaking out around the edge of the pie. When the pie is baked, it is taken off and turned over, and the lugs of the attachment form legs to support it on a shelf while it is cooling.
The attachment also permits a number of pics to be packed together one above an other, as it holds the pies apart, and protects them from injury. The top of the attachment is preferably open, and when no upper crust is used, the filling of the pie can be placed in it after the attachment has been clamped to the pie plate.
Thelower edge of the attachment cuts the pie crust that extends outside the pie plate without the use of a knife.
What I claim is:
1. An attachment for a pie plate, com prising an annular member provided with a peripheral flange having a downwardly projecting cutting edge, said member having also upwardly projecting lugs adapted to support it when inverted, and having also means for attaching it to a pie plate.
2. The combination, with a pie plate provided with a flange, of an annular attachment provided with a similar flange and having upwardly projecting lugs adapted to support the pie plate when inverted, and means for securing the two flanges together.
3. An attachment for a pie plate, comprising an annular member provided with a pe ripheral flange and upwardly projecting lugs adapted to support it when inverted, said attachment having also means for attaching it to a pie plate.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JULIA BAKKEN.
