Description

NITED PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CENTRIFUGAL CLOTHES-WRINGERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,045., dated August 19,1873; application filed June 14, 1 "3.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY RosAMYER, J r., of Rochester, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gentrifugal Olothes-Wringer; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the let- .clothes-wringer. Fig. 2 is a vertical and transverse section of the same at line as of Fig. 1.
A represents the tub, which is of ordinary construction, with the exception that it is provided with feet B.' To the bottom of the tub A at c are attached metal strips O, on the lower ends of which are cups D,in to which are placed the lower ends of the feet B, as shown in Fig. 2. By this arrangement of the strips 0 and cups D with relation to the feet B of the tub A it is not liable to move and shift over the floor, and scrape or otherwise injure it. In the center of the bottom of the tub is secured a step, f, for the lower end of the shaft g of the basket A, which consists of the bottom B, ring 0, cross-piece 0, vertical rods D, and bracingwiresj". The constructionof the basket A will be readily understood by reference to the drawings and from the foregoing description. The upper bearing for the shaft g of the basket A is in the cross-piece to, which is secured upon the tub A by means of rods 10, as shown in Fig. 1. On the upper end of the shaft 9 is secured a bevel-wheel, h, the periphery of which is covered with an elastic band of India rubber, or other suitable flexible material. On the.cross piece a are three uprights, m, m, and It, the uprights m serving as bearings for the shaft 1, on which is secured a bevel tractive driving-wheel, k. On the outer end of the shaft 1 is a crank, it. To the upright It is secured, through the medium of a set-screw, t, a flexible metal strip, P, the upper end of which presses against the inner end 'of the shaft Z. In the upright It is provided a set-screw, s, the point of which presses against the flexible metal strip P, forcing it against the inner end of the shaft 1, and thereby forcing the driving-wheel 70 against the wheel h,
causing the desired friction between the wheels k and h. On the sides of the tub A are handles 3 which are used for the purpose of moving it from place to place, or for otherwise handling it.
The operation of my improved centrifugal wringer is ,as follows: The wet clothes are placed in the basket A, when the operator revolves the shaft 1, through the medium of the crank n. The revolving of the shaft l will revolve the wheel k, which will revolve the wheel h, and thereby revolve the basket A with great speed, causing the water to be thrown off from the clothes by centrifugal force, thereby perfectly wringing them. The water is removed from the tub by any suitable means. The revolving speed of the basket A is increased or diminished by means of the set-screw s and flexible strip P. If the force of the strip P against the end of the shaft l is great the revolving speed of the basket will be great; but if the pressure of the strip P against the end of the shaft 1 is light the revolving speed of the basket will be slow.
Having thus described the nature and operation of my improvement, what I claim as of my invention is- The combination of the tub A, provided with feet B, strips 0, and cups D, with the basket A, driving friction-wheels h and k, shaft l, flexible strip P, and set-screw s, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
