To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JOSHUA BEASLEY and JOSHUA BEASLEY, Jr., of Lynn, county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Burnishing the Edges of Boot and Shoe Soles, of which the following is a specifica tion:

The invention relates to machines for burnishing the sole-edges of boots and shoes; and consists of certain improvements in the jack] or support for holding the boot or shoe during the operation of burnishing or setting the edges, as will be hereafter explained.

The operation will now be easily understood to be that, when the boot or shoe is placed upon the jack, as represented at Fig. 1, the operator grasps any convenient portion of the jack with his left hand and slides it with the base toward and underneath the burnishing-tool A, and with the right upon the handle, as at B, Fig. 1, he guides the tool upon the edge of the sole in any and every position desired, said handle or arm B beingformed of the two parts, a socket or sleeve and mandrel or axis, as at Z, by which it may rotate on its axis, as the work requires, and while the tool itself is rapidly reciprocating, being drivenby power applied by the belts or some similar mechanical equivalent, leaving the operator free to control the tool and produce the required pressure.

We therefore claim- The combination, in a jack or holder for a boot or shoe edging machine, of the stud U, bindingslide V, and pawl W, mounted on a pivoted rest, all constructed and capable of being operated as described, and for the purposes set forth.
