IMPROVEMENTIN MOLDS OR BOXES FOR BRICK-PRESSES.
Specification forming part/of Letters Patent No. lfll, dated August 19, 1873; application filed i July 26, 1873.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MGKENNA, of Cambria, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Box for Brick-Press, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a top view of my improved box. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal .section of the same taken through the line w Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved brickpress box, which shall be so constructed that the steel facing, when worn, may be trued up, and the box adjusted toits original size. rIhe invention consists in an improved press-box formed of the separate side pieces, having transverse grooves formed upon the inner sides of their ends, the end pieces having tenons formed upon their ends, the olampingbolts, and the thin metallic packingstrips, as hereinafter fully described.
The -press-boxes for making iire-brick have heretofore been cast solid and lined with steel. The steel facing soon wears away, so that the bricks aretoo large and untrue. The steel has then to be taken out and replaced with new, which can only be done at considerable expense.
In my improved boxes the sides A and ends B are made ia separate pieces, and the parts are held together by bolts G. In the inner sides of the ends of the sides A are formed transverse grooves a', and upon the ends of the ends B are formed tenons b', which tenons b are made considerablynarrower than the grooves a', the space' being takenup by thin packing-strips D, of metal, placed in the grooves a. at the sides of the tenons b. The
inner shoulders ofthe ends B rest against the inner surface of the sides A; but a space is left between the outer shoulders of the ends and the inner surface of the ends of the sides, as shown in Fig. l. In the outer sides of the ends B are formed longitudinal grooves, to receive the bolts C, which pass through holes in the sides A, and have nuts screwed upon their ends, to clamp the various parts of the box together.
As the steel lining wears and becomes untrue the box is taken apart, and the steel lining dressed or trued up. The box is then put together, and one or more of the'strips D at each corner are removed from the inner side of the tenons b and placed upon the outer side of said tenons, to bring the box to the exact length, its width being regulated by the inner shoulders of the ends and sides, as hereinbefore described.
By this construction the steel lining can be worn very thin before replacing it with new.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent- An improved press-box, formed of the separate side pieces A, having transverse grooves formed upon the inner sides of their ends, the end pieces B, having tenons formed upon their ends, the clamping-bolts G, and the. thin metallic packing-strips D, substantially as herein shown and described.
