Description
A. J. WALLACE.
RECE PTACLE C 0VER. APPLICAHON FILED DEC. I6, 1920.
Patented June 6,1922.
Qwpenloz 'ALBERTJOSEIH WALLACE, or ALGONAG, Mrcrnem.
BECEPTACLE co'vna. I
T all whom it may concern Be it known that ALBERT .J. NaLLACE, a; citizen of "the United" States, residing at Algonac, in the county of Saint Clair and State of Michigan, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacle Covers, of which the following is a specification, reference being 'hadtherein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a receptacle cover, and more particularly to a detachable cover for a receptacle, such for instance, as a live fish bait pail, or a pail of any description.
The object of the invention is the production of a detachable cover that is simple in operation and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Another object of the invention is the construction of a simple and efficient sectional cover that can be quickly applied to a receptacle, having a rolled'or beaded 'upperedge.
With these and other objects in view, my invention comprises certain other novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, as will: be hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my cover showing the same on a receptacle, while Figure 2 is a bottom view of the cover. Figure 3 is a fragmentary'sectional view taken on line 3-3, Fig. 1, and looking in the direction of thearrows.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of one of the inner lugs of the device.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the primaryv section and 2' the auxiliary section, these sections being hingedly connected together at 3.
The auxiliary section 2 is of an open frame-like structure partly closed by, the
wire-mesh 4. If the cover is used upon a live fish bait pail, plenty of air is allowed to enter the receptacle or pail'5, yet the fish,
by reason of the wire mesh 4, cannot jump out furthermore, 1f the pail 1s submerged in water, like when hung over the side of a boat, fresh water can pass into the pail through the wire mesh.
The auxiliary section 2 includes the ribs Specification of Letters I Application filed December 1c, 1920. Serial a... 421,132.
6, andlstru'clr-up from ribs 16, as well aslthe top of-pz-rimary section .1, are eyes 7.
ui ege, 1922.
Gnithe-inner face of each sectionl and 2,
are preferably a pair of fixed lugs '8; these; 7 mner'lugrs 8 are arranged'shghtly within the marginal edge of the sectlons', so tliatthese lugs engage theii nner wall'of the pail .5, Fig. 3; the upper edge of the pailis rolled, as at: 9. to form ahead to better enable the adjustable clamping devices, hereinafter described,
to retain the cover in place upon the recep tacle.
A pair of fixed'clamps'lO are secured to;
the .top of the auxiliary. section 2, near. its
partly around the rolled edge 9 of the recepi tacle 5 to further assist holding the cover upon the receptacle.
In the present embodiment ofm yinvenj tion, I have preferably shown one of the adjustable clamping devices 11 on the primary} v if section; however, it willv only be necessary,"
section, while I employ two on the auxiliary to specifically describe one of the adjustable stantial V-shaped body, having a lower hook clamping devices, asall are duplicates. '.The f I adjustable clamping device comprises sub- 12 thatipasses around the rolled or beaded edge 9 of the receptacle (Fig. 3) whereas,-th e I upper hook 13 constitutes agrip for the operi ator to grasp to release the 'clamping devic'e from the engaging position upon the rolled edge of the receptacle. A coil spring 14 is and the inner end 16 of the spring 14 is threaded'under the strucksup eye 7 for holdemployed. the outer end 15 beingpassed,
through the inner'end of the. V-shaped body ing the springin anassembled positionupon the section.
Each of the inner lugs 8 is formed from a single piece of metal and comprises a hollow substantially V- shaped body- (Fig. 3;) that terminates in reduced tongues-17 that are threaded throughsmall apertures inthe sec tions. i
It will be seen that to attach the cover t o a rolled'or beaded-ed e receptacle, the auxiliary section is placed .100 V. r first upon the tacle so that the fixed cl 1 can belxshd upon the rolled edge, -as s own in Fig. '1
then the operator canquickly'placethe lower p 3 hooks '12 of the V-shaped bodiesofthei ad;
justable clamping devices in position upon the rolled edge (Fig. 3), then the primary leasethe adjustable clamping device, carried by the primary section 1, swing the hinged section up and then reach into thereceptacle, as desired.
While I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention'and have illustrated the same in the accompanying drawing, certain minor changes or alterations may appear to one skilled in the art to which this invention relates, during the extensive manufacture of my invention, and I, there- 20 fore,.rese rve the right to make such-altera'tions or changes as shall fairly fall WltlllIL combination of a cover, aniadjustable clamping device mounted upon said cover, sald clamping device being formed. from a strip of material and compris ng a V-shaped body, the side arms of the V-shaped body being ex tended and curved apartto form enlarged oppositely extending upper and lower hooks, the lower hook beingsadapted to engage areceptacle, the upper hook constituting a grip, and retracting means connected to the base of the V-shaped body' and to said cover, as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I'hereunto affix my signature.
ALBERT JOSE? H WA LACE.
