T 0 all w from it may concern Be it known that I, JosnPi-i OLIN BEN- NETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Shreveport, in the parish of Caddo and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Posts for ell-Drilling Rotaries, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in posts, and has for its object to provide a post of the type designated back-up posts for rotary drilling rigs for drllling wells, wherein the post is so arranged that it IS not necessary to remove the same when taking off the tongs, the post consisting of hinged sections, one of which is adapted to swing on the other, releasable means being provided for holding the movable section in alinement with the body of the post.

In the present embodiment of the invention the improved post comprises a lower section 1, which is adapted to be seated in a hole or otherwise supported, and a section 2 which is hinged to the section 1. The section 1 has a pair of laterally spaced lugs 3 at its upper end, between which is re ceived a lug 4 on the lower end of the section 2, and a bolt 5 is passed through registering openings in the lugs to pivotally connect the parts, the belt being engaged by a nut- 6.
Referring to Figure 1, it will be seen that the section 1 has a head 7 at its upper end from which the lugs 3 extend, and a handle, indicated at 8, i pivotally connected with the lower section of the post at this point. This handle has connected with one end thereof a yoke comprising a body 9 and arms 10, the yoke body being connected to the handle, while the arms 10 extend on opposite sides of the head 7, and the said arms are pivotally connected to the head by a bolt and nut 11. At the end of each arm remote from the handle there is pro vided a lateral extension or lug 12 and these lugs or extensions are adapted to engage on opposite sides of the lugs 3 and i, when said lugs are in alinement, as clearly shown in Figure 1, to hold the section 2 of the post in verticalposition and in alinement with the section 1. When the handle is swung downwardly, as shown in full lines in Figure 1, these lugs 12 will lie across the three lugs 3 and t, while when the handle is swung up into the dotted line position of Figure 1 the extensions 12 release the lug 4r so that the post 2 may swing down into the posi ion shown in Figures 2 and 3.
In operation, to set up the post, it is only necessary to swing up the section 2 and to permit the'handle 8 to drop. The engagement of the body of the yoke with the section 1 of the post limits the downward move ment of the handle to the position of Figure 1, wherein the lugs 12 are in operative position. When it is desired'to release the movable section, the handle is lifted, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1. The lug 4; is now released, and may swing into the position of Figures 2 and 3. These posts are used for holding chain tongs when breaking joints in pipe, and with the improved post the post may be tripped and the tongs taken out without taking the postout of the hole or other holder for the same.
Figure 1 illustrates the sectional post in its operative position and it also illustrates 'a wrench 18 in its operative position in engagement with the upper section 2 and in engagement with the joint 19 of a string of pipe 20. .Vhen the wrench is in this position, the Contact of the wrench handle with the section 2 will prevent the rotation or swinging of the wrench handle beyond the section 2.- When the joint has been broken the operator may grasp the lever or handle 8 and elevate the same so that the upper section assumes the full line position illustrated in Figure 2. hen the upper section 2 is thus positioned the wrench may be rotated slightly and easily released from the joint 19.
lVith reference to the foregoing description, it will be seen that the upper section 2 may be readily swung to its lower position by simply elevating the handle 8, whereupon the wrench may be readily swung around and released. By the use of this form of post, much labor will be saved and the breakage usually occurring when the wrench and the breakout pin are poundedfor releasing the wrench, is ellmlnated.
Figure 1 illustrates the lower section 1 of the post as being rotatably carried by the platform 22 of the rotary.
I claim:
1. A post of the'character specified com prising a lower section and an upper section, said sections having interengaging lugs and a pivotal connection between the lugs, releasable means, normally operative, conneoted with the lower section for engaging the lugs to hold the sections in alinement, said means comprising a lever pivoted to the lower section, and having extensions adapted to extend across the lugs when the posts are in alinernent, to prevent the breaking of the joint.
. 2. A post of the character specified comprising a lower section and an upper sec tion, said sections. having interengaging lugs and avpivotal connection between the lugs, and releasable means normally operative, connected with the lower section for engaging the lugs to hold the sections in alinei ment.
3. A device of the character specified. comprising post sections, one of the sections having a pair of longitudinally extending lugs at one end and the other having a single lug fitting between the first named lugs, a pivotal connection between the lugs, and a handle having connected therewith a yoke, the arms of the yoke engaging opposite sides of the first named section adjacent to the lugs and being pivoted to the said section, each arm of the yoke having a lateral extension adapted to extend across the lugs when the sections are in alinement, the body of the yoke being'adapted to engage the lower section when the handle swings downwardly to hold said extensions in position to sections.
