1/ r) all ii /2.0m it may concern Be it known that l l nnninucn ilil rronmn. a citizen o'l the United States, and resident of the boroingh of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in l"heutriral Lamps, of which the following a specification.
This invention relates to lamps of the class known as theatrical. lamps, and my improvements are directed to a lampstructure of such churacter as to be capable of service either :forspot light purposes, or as an open light.

The means whereby l have been enabled to achieve the dual light eflect referred to COlllPilSG a lamp ra sing; containing a light organism, such {18 opposed carliions with their feed mechanism, and reflector; said casing having' a lens portion with focusing menus, for the spot light effect, and flared portion for open light effect.
The lipid organism is morz bly mounted in the casing, so that it may be caused to co-act either with the lens portion of the lamp, or with the flared portion thereof, and the lamp structure generally is adapted for practical operation both as a spot light and an open light.
Other features and advantages of my invention will hereinafier appear.

In carrying; out my invention I provide a rectangular casing 1, having an upper extension 2 and a lower extension 8. At one end of said casing 1 there is fitted a lens 4,

Said light organism, in the exanwle herein illustrated, consists oi the opposed carbons 12, carried by sockets l3, 13, that themselves are udjustzvbly extended out it'rom insulated. joints 14.- forming part of a frame 15, which is connected to and carried by arm 11.
At 16 I have shown the vertical adjustment'member for carbon feed, said member l. a rod having knurled head 17, and havat different portions of its length, ope threads in engagement with similarly opposed threads in collar portions 18, 18, which collar portions respectively have apertured extensions 19, 19, whereby they may slid-ably engage with a guide rod 20.

The arm 11, carrying the light organism aforesaid, is capable oi swinging upwardly in either direction through 180 degrees, between rhe horizontal position of its operativeness as an open light, indicated in full lines in Fig. l, and the horizontal position shown in the same figure in dotted lines, in which latter position it becomes operative, by means of oo-action with lens 4, as a spot light, thus combining in the one lamp structure the two functions of an open light and a spot light.
The swivel joint 10 is so devised, as by means of a stop 21, that the arm 11 is brought to rest when at its horizontal position, in either direction, and thus is capable only of swinging upwardly from the horizontal plane. By these means, however, the light organism is reversible so that it may be caused to co-act, at will, with either the spot light or open light directing means, this being the main purpose of my invention.

Also, by means of the hand holes 23, 24: respectively in the lower and upper extensions of the casing, at one end thereof, the operator is enabled to swing'the light organism from one to the other of its operative positions; to adjust the focus; and to actuate the feed of the carbons.
The lamp is supported upon the base 25 by a telescoping shaft 26, working in tubular portion 27, controlled by set screw 28; also being revoluble under the control of a set screw29; while the angular adjustment of the lamp is controlled by a suitable joint 30; these features being of usual character. The usual rheostat, for reducing the voltage supplied to the lamp, is shown at 31, and the current controlling switch is indicated at 32.
lVhen the lamp is being utilized for spot light purposes the flared. end portion thereof is to'be covered, to prevent escape of light rays through the opposite, flared end portion of the lamp. For this purpose I provide a cover 33, here shown as hinged at 3st to said portion 5, and capable of clos ing over the exposure at that end. But
when the light organism directs the light out through the open, flared end 5,. then the lens portion should be covered, and, as an example of suitable covering means, I have shown a cap which is capable of being fitted over the lens portion of the lamp, to obscure the light at that end.
I Slide ways 36, provided respectively at the flared and lens containing portions of thejlamp, serve the usual purpose of receivhended by the foregoing disclosure.
I claim: 1. A lamp comprising a casing having light concentrating means at one end and light spreading means at its opposite end,
and a longitudinally adjustable light organism, reversibly mounted in said casing, to co-act respectively with said light concentrating'means and light spreading means. 7

A lamp comprising a casing provided at opposite ends,'respectively, with light concentrating means and light spreading means, a light organism, a mount therefor, and a support upon which the mount is longitudinally adjustable, the light organism engaging the mount reversibly, whereby it may co-act either with the light concentrating means or the light spreading means. A lamp comprising a casing provided at opposite ends, respectively, with light concentrating means and light spreading means, the casing provided with upper and lower enlargements, each having a handhole, a light organism, a mount therefor, and a support upon which the mount is longitudinally adjustable, the light organism engaging the mount reversibly, a part thereof being adapted to swing through the enlargements, whereby the light organism may co-act with the light concentrating means or the light spreading means.
