EDWARD BERNARD HESS 'AND LEWIS CARY MYERS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNORS T ROYAL TYPEWRITER COMPANY, INC., OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SCALE FOR TYPEWRITING MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 30, 1922.
Original application filed January 13, 1921, Serial No. 436,924. Divided and this application ii'led May 27, 1921. Serial No. 473,173.
I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD BERNARD HEss and LEWIS CARY MYERS, both citizens of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scales for Typewritmg Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This application is a division of our app ilication for patent filed Jan. 13, 1921, 0. 436,924.
This lIlVBIltlOll relates to devices for holding cards, envelopes, etc., in printing position on the platen, and which are provided with indicating scales.
According tothis invention means is provided for. securely holding the card, envelope or the like in place and for readily attaching it to a suitable part of the machine. v
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a typewriting machine with our improvements applied.
Figure 2 shows a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. j
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the scale detached. I
The carriage platen is indicated at A, the type-bar segment at B, and the type guide at C. A ribbon guide or vibrator is shown at D, and a part of the carriage frame at E.
The shift rail F is supported. by a frame Gr to which the vibrator is connected, as 1ndicated at g. H indicates a card scale. I
The scale, shown detached in Fig. 3, comprises an upper, horizontal, graduated plate h, formed with outwardly turned curved ends h, and it has a central opening it. It is also formed at its outer end with projections it which are adapted to bear against the card, envelope or paper being printed. Similar proje'ctionsc' are formed on the plate on opposite sides of, and near, thecentral opening 12. and there are also projections j interposed between the projections h" and The scale is graduated, as shown, the scale marks extending along the upper edge of the plate and also into the pro ections.
In this way the card or envelope printed upon is very securely held in place, and the scale is especially useful when the bottom portion 0 the envelope is being printed.
These devtices also cooperate very nicely with the paper rolls K located above them and which are adjustable towards and from each other on the rod K.
The scale plate It is attached by means of screws Z to the upper parts of the side members of the bracket which are connected by a cross-piece L. The upper portions of these side members are extended downwardly, rearwardly and then downwardly again, as indicated in Fig. 2, and are attachcd as at g, to the front portion of the frame G below the shift rail. The side members L are prolonged to a considerable extent above the upper edge of the scale plate, providing fingers Z which bear firmly on the card or article being held.
The cross-piece L is provided with a gointer Z cooperating with a carriage scale I of the usual kind.
The scale H contains novel features and the construction is such as to enable the scale to be properly associated with the type guide C and the ribbon vibrator D.
-The members L, connected by the crosspiece L, constitute a bracket for supporting the scale plate and for connecting it to the subframe of the carriage.
' We claim as our invention:
1. A scale for typewriting machines having a central opening and carrying on each side of the opening a plurality of projections adapted to bear on the card, envelope or paper with which it engages, and a bracket to which the scale is secured and which is rigidly attached to the shift frame.
2. A scale for typewriting machines having a central opening and at its upper edge a plurality of projections extending across the line of print, and a bracket to which the scale is secured, having portions attached to a vertically movable part of the machine and having a central. portion provided with a pointer.
3. A scale for typewriting machines having projections on its upper edge adapted to bear against the card, envelope or paper with which it engages, a bracket to which on each side of the central opening, and a bracket to which the scale is secured comprising two members having projections above the scale and parts below the scale adapted to be secured to a part of thecarriage frame and provided with a pointer arranged centrally of the machine.
5. A scale for typewriting machines having a central opening and at its upper edge a plurality of projections extending across the line of print, a bracket to which the scale is secured having portions attached to a part of the machine and having a central portion provided With a pointer, all of these
