One of the objects of the invention is to provide a connectionv between the converter and hood which will have the least possible clearance and which will maintain a f substantially gas tight connection between the converter and hood under all working conditions.
Another object of the invention is to provide a connection which will in no way interfere with the normal operation ofthe converter and which will automatically clear itself of any accretions which may vform during the blowingor other operations incidental to the use of the device. .n v

The weight ot the hood is supported mainly from cleats 26 (see Fig. l.) on opposite sides of the hood which rests loosely upon supporting-bars 27carried by the main sup ,porting 'trame 28. t is preferable however, to. consider that a material portion ot the weight ot the Ahood is 'supported directly on the rotatable converter shell and part-icularly upon the hood carrying rings'22. As the rings 22 are ot some material depth it is apparent that this term of mounting will tend to maintain the lower portion ot the hood in spaced relation to the vconverter shell` so that distortion ot f the shell, Vdue to the heat and other conditions present, will have little, it any, effect upon .the position ot the hood. vin this way the hood will vbe?v maintained substantially in fixed position under all working' condi-y tions. is the converter adjusts itself on its roller cradle support, the hood supporting` rollers 29 will likewise adjust vthemselves so that a smooth running converter' is provided under ,all conditions o'tvservice and at the same time the connection with the hood is maintained.

When it is desired to dump the chargel from the converter, it is rotated through the actuation of the `power member 14 as is usual with such devices. During this rotation it will be apparent that the lower end of the hood willr ride on the converter without in any way effecting its normali operation.
By means of a device of this character, it is possible to provide a converter hood with minimum clearance and which willv in no w ay interfere with converter operations. All gases produced by the converter willbe taken up? by the -flue and stack system represented by the conduit'l2 with the least possible strain on the capacity thereof and further there will be an elimination of surface gases about the converter plant, which elimination acts 'to increase flue and stack capacity. Further any distortion which may take place due to the heating of the converter shell will 'have no effect upon the positioning of the hood', so that racking action ofthis large member is practically eliminated.
While I have shown `and described, and have pointed out in the annexed claims, certain novel. features of my invention, it will be understood thatvarious omissions, substitutions and changes in the 'form anddetails yof the device-illustrated andin its operation may be made by those. skilled in theart without departing fromthe spirit ofthe invention. A. Having thus described my invention, I claim:

combination ofl a cylindrical converter shell l mounted to revolve about its axisandhaving CIK -said opening, means discharge opening in the side thereof, a hood mounted to receive the discharge from Jior providing a closed connection between the opening and hood, said means being spaced 'from the converter shell thereby to insulatethe same Afrom dis torting strains on the converter shell, and
means for supporting the hood in position engagingsaid closed connection means.

In aA device of the class described, the combination of a cylindrical converter shell mounted to revolve about its axis and having a discharge opening in the side thereof, a hood mounted in iixedposition to receive the discharge from said opening, means carried by the converter' shell 'for closing the space between thev converter shell and theadjaccnt end of the hood, and means 'for supporting said adjacent end of the hood from said converter shell whereby the converter and said means are permitted a revolving `movement independent of' the hood.

plate carried by the shell and curved about said axis as a center, a hood positioned above the shell and adapted to receive the discharges from said converter shell and a curtain plate hung from the adjacent end of the hood and engaging' said curved plate to close the space between the hood and plate, said curtain plate being movable in the direction'of rotation of the converter shell whereby accretions on the curved plate within the hood may be removed therefrom automatically by rotating the converter shell.
