To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SALVATORE Izzo, a subject of the King of Italy, anda resident of Rome, Kingdom of Italy, have invented a certain new and useful I do hereby declare that the following is a description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
This invention relates to permutation locks and is especially intended to guarantee the safety of railroad freight cars and the like; The lock is distinguished by the fact that the same cannot be opened without the proper key, said key being the only one for which the mechanism of the lock has been adjusted to receive, said mechanism comprising a plurality of elements such that a plurality of individual permutations can be constructed in the same look as desired.
A further feature of the invention consists in inclosing the permutation mechanism within a hinged cover or housing, the same being secured in closed position and locked therein only when the lock or latch is also looked.

\Vhen it is desired to maintain the lockin the closed position, as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 41 and yet not lock the door or portion to which the lever latch a is pivotally supported, an auxiliary locking tooth B, having the hole 106 shown clearly in Fig. 7, is provided by which said lock is maintained in the closed position. This is accomplished by having the tooth B seatable in the registering opening 2223 and having the tooth 7 register with the hole 106. i
The means for actuating the plate 10 carrying the actuating pin 9 is as follows. The actuating plate 10, as shown clearly in Fig. 6, is provided with a plurality of parallel and longitudinally extending slots 25. In spaced relation with said slots and communicating therewith and in spaced relation with each other, are a plurality of semi-circular notches 25. The plate 10 is also provided with a finger piece 11 which is adapted to project outwardly from said look, as shown in Fig. 1, and by which said plate is actuated to reciprocate the locking bolt 7, as shown. The stationary plate 21 is provided with a plurality of perforations 21 see Fig. 3 which normally register with the longitudinal slots 25 and the semi-circular .notches 25 Inv the slots 21 are secured locking pins 16, said pins being slidable transversely of the actuating plate 10 and the stationary plate 21. 7 Each of the pins is cut away as shown at 21' to form a stem portion surrounding which is positioned the tension spring 18 which normally forces said locking pin towards the plate 10. The upper end of the spring 18 is held in position by means of the stop pin 19. Said stop pins 19 extend transversely through the locking pins 16 and have their ends engageable in suitable slots formed upon projecting and enclosing bosses 21 in which each of said locking pins is slidable and turnable. As shown in the drawings, the locking pins 16 are provided with conically formed ends 15, such that the v pins may be cammed by suitable means so as to reciprocate longitudinally of the registering notches 25 and the openings 21. Upon the exposed portion of the locking pin 16 is a button 20, the same carrying suitable l indicating means such as numbers, letters and the like. Each pin 16 is provided with a plurality'of transversely extending notches,
17, see Fig. 3, said notches preferably lying in parallel planes rather than in the same plane. Herein the locking devices are shown provided with but two notches and these are positioned diametrically opposite upon the locking'pin and in parallel relation, as-
shown in Fig. 3. It will be understood that any locking pin 16 may be turned in the present construction 180 degrees, whereby the transverse notch, which is positioned adjacent the semi-circular slots 25 in the plate 10, is the effective notch governing the control of the plate by said pin. It will be understood that in this manner with'a series of pins, such as disclosed, and with five in one row, there is provided a slot 25 in the plate 10 with five semi-circular slots seating said pins. foregoing that with these five pins in one row, since each pin is provided with two diametrically positioned transverse slots, that when any one or a plurality of said pins are turned to select one or either of said transverse slots, a number of combinations can be obtained with this rowof five pins, the number thereof being determined from the usual permutation formula. I In the drawing, however, there is illustrated a lock in whichnot only five pins are positioned in a row, but there are ten rows of such locking pins instead of one row of five pins each. In this manner innumerable combinations, which can be calculated from the before mentioned formula, are possible. While there are but two diametrically positioned notches 17 shown in each locking pin, it will be evident that more than two notches may be secured to each locking pin, and a convenient method of indicating the position of each pin can be determined by diametrical slots formed in the boss 21 to receive the stop pin 19.
The means. for actuating each of the re spective pins comprises a key plate 12, shown clearly in Fig. 5, the same being insertable in a slot formed in the casing 2. Said key is shown provided with a beveled edge 12, which beveled edge engages the conical ends 15 of the locking pins 16. The key 12 is also shown provided with a plurality of fiutings or grooves 13, similar in number to the longitudinal slots 25 and parallel thereto. Registering'with each of the semi-circular slots 25 and the holes 21 of the plate 21 are a plurality of conical depressions 1 1 formed in said key plate. 7 While the invention has been described in great detail in the foregoing specification it will be understood that the broader features thereof are not to be limited thereby, since many modifications will suggest. themselves to those skilled in the art, a few of which have been suggested in the foregoing specification.
The invention claimed is:
l. A look having in combination a latch, including a recessed to0th, a hinged casing having an opening in one end of each hinged portion, said openings registering when said hinged casing portions are in closed position to receive said recessed tooth, a bolt slidable into engagement with said recessed tooth to retain the same in the lock and the lock casing in closed position.
2. A lock having in combination a slidable bolt, a plate for sliding said bolt, said plate having a slot therein and a semi-circular opening communicating with said slot, a locking pin slidably positioned in said plate and provided with a transverse notch adapted to register and receive said plate, spring means normally holding .said locking pin in the plate looking posltion, and a ey for moving said pin from said position to register said notch with said plate to permit the latter to be moved to actuate said bolt.

including a recessed tooth thereon, a hinged casing havlng an opening in one end of each hinged portion, sald openings registering when said hinged casing portions are in closed position to receive said recessed tooth, a bolt-slidable into engagement with said recessed tooth to retain the same and the lock casing in closed position, a plate for sliding said bolt, said plate having a slot therein and a semi-circular opening communicating with said'slot, a locking pin slidably positioned in said plate and provided with a transverse notch adapted to register and receive said plate, spring means normally holding said locking pin in the plate locking position, said pin from said position to register said notch with said plate to permit the latter to be moved to actuate said bolt.

7. A look having in combination a latch, a hinge casing having an opening in one end of each hinged portion thereof, said openings registering when said hinge casing portions are in closed position to receive said latch, and a bolt within said casing for engagement with said latch to retain the same in the lock and the casing portions in the closed position.
