To all whom t may concern e it known' that l, Anornn CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at ,Chica-go, in the county Illinois, have invented a certain new and u seful Improvement in Car-Door-Lockmg .echanisms of which the Yiollowing is a full.,y clear, concise, and. exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This inventionrelates to improvements 1n car door locking mechanisms.

A specific object of the invention 1s to providel a locking mechanlsm for doors of a dump car known as twin door type.
In the drawing forming a part of this A Specification, Figure l is a side elevational view of a portion of a tw1n door type ot my improvements 1n c0nnection therewith, the twin doors being in closed locked position. Figure 2 is averti- 19 cal, sectional view taken transversely of the car and corresponding substantially to the line 2-2 of Figure l. And Figure 3'is 'a view similar to Figure l but illustratingr the condition of the locking mechanism when one of the doors is in open or partly open position, in order to better illustrate certain details of the construction.
In said drawing, I have only illustrated suicient of a dump car'of the twin door type necessary to an understanding of my invention, it being evident that the improved locking mechanism will be duplicated for each set of twin doors and also that the locking mechanism may be applied to dump cars of different type.

Each bracket is formed onthe top thereof with two flange sections 19-19 integrally formedand sloping oppositcly upwardly from the center to correspond to the slope of the lower edges of the vertical sheets l2, said flange sections eing riveted to the sheet 12, as shown in Figures l and 2. Below the iange sec-tions 19, the bracket A is formed with three dependent heavy arms B, C and D. The arm B is centrally located opposite the meeting line ot the free edges ot' the doors and the other twoarms C and disposed with the central arm .B but on opposite sides thereof. The arms C and D extend in a general direction perpendicular to the main plane of the corresponding door when the latter is in closed position. VEach of the arms B, and D is outwardly ofi'- set from the fiange sections 1.9 as indicated best at 20 in Figure 2 so as to provide the necessary clearance for the side edges of the door and allow' the main portions of the latter to abut snugly against the lower edges of the 1'einforced sheets 12, from an inspection of Figure 2. Each ot the arms C and D, clear at its bottom end, is formed with an outwardly extended shelf or ledge 2l, the upper face of which extends parallel to tion.

The levers 23I are pivotally connected to the bracket A by suitable means such as the bolts 24. liVith this construction, it will bc observed that the lock levers 23 are adapted to swing in planes parallel to the planes ot the respective doors when the latter arek in closed position and to have the 'tree ends ot said levers swung intoposition over and rest upon the corresponding shelves or ledges Ql--2l- The lock levers are adapted to be held in their operative or closed position by latches Q5 pivotally supported from the corresponding arms (,r and D, the tree ends ot' the latches 25 swinging outside oft' and against the rcspective lock levers 23. The tree end oieach latch may be laterally enlarged as indicated at 25l1 in Figure 2 tor the twofold purpose of increasing the weight oi the tree end -and to provide a suitable section to be hit with a bar in releasing the mechanism.
On each door, at each side .thereof and within the channel brace, is secured a bracket casting designated generally by the reference E. Each bracket casting lll is tormcd with a top flange 26 riveted to the web ot' the channel brace and with a flange 2T riveted to the flange ot' the brace remote from the free edge of the door. llach bracket casting E is further provided with a vertically extending flange as indi Iated at 2H immediately inside the side flange 1T ot' the door and from the lower portions ot' the flanges 27 and Q8 and below the door flange 17, is extended outwardly horizontally an integral arm or bar QS The arms or bars 29 are so positioned that, when the door swings to closed position, the arms pass up into the recesses indicated at B() which are deiined between the pairs ot' depending arms ol the. brackets iV hen the arms` or bars 29 are in their uppermost position. that is, with the doors closed, the lock levers 23 are swung beneath them, thus securely locking the doors in closed position, as will be evident.
lt. will be seen that the arrangement shown and described can be manufactured, sold and applied at comparatively small cost; 'the mechanism may be operated with ease and without the use of any special tools: there are, no delicate or weak parts likely to tail or get out ot ord r; andthe mechanism insures the doors being` maintained in fully closed position even under full load.
l have herein shown and described what l -now consider the preferred manner ot carrying out the invention, but the same is merely illustrative and l contemplate all changes and modifications that come within the scope ot' the claims appended hereto.

2. ln a dump car having a pivoted door` the combination with a bracketsecm'ed to a fixed part of the car adjacent an edge ot' the door when the latter is in closed position; ot' a bar rigid with the door and projecting from said edge in line with said bracket: and a locking lever pivotally` supported on said bracket to swing against said bar on the under side ot the latter, said bracket having a supporting ledgeon which the free cnd ot said lever rests when` in locked position.
3. ln a dump car having a pivoted door. the combination with a bracket secured to a tived part ot the car and having separated aims projecting substantially perpendicular to the plane ot' the door past one edge ot the latter; of a bar rigid on said door projecting trom said edge and movable to a position between said arms; `and a locking member arranged to extend trom one arm to the other and be supported thereby and lock said bar between said member and bracket.

5. ln a dmnp car having a pivoted door, the combination with a bracket secured to a fixed part ot' the car and having separated arms projecting substantially perpendicular to the plane ot the door past one edge of the latter; ot a bar rigid on said door jn'ojecting 'from said edge and movable to a position between said arms; and a lever pivoted to one ot said arms and swingable in a plane vsubstantiallly parallel to the-plane ot' the door to engage said bar and hold the door in closed position.` the other ol said arms having a supporting ledge Jfor the tree end ot' said lever when the. latter is in operative position.

7. In a dump car, having a pivoted= door with the free edge thereof adapted to swing downwardly when opening, the combination with a bracket secured to a fixedwpart of the car and having a portion extending across the side edge of the door W'lienwfthe latter is in closed position; of a projection rigid with the V'door and extending from said side thereof; a lock lever pivoted to said portion of the bracket adapted to swing to a position on the underside of said projection7 said bracket having a supporting ledge for the free end of the lever; and a latch pivotally supported on said bracket adapted to swing against the outer side of said lock lever to thereby retain it 1n operative position.

9. In a dump car, the combination. with.
a pair of pivoted doors adapted to swing oppositely and having their free edges meet-V ing when in closed position; of a bracket secured to a fixed part of the car opposite the line of meeting of said free edges of the doors; a projection rigid with each door; and a pair of independently operable locking elements supported from .said bracket and cooperable With the respective door projections to lock the doors in closed position.

In a dump car, the combination with a pair of oppositely swinging doors having their free edges meeting'vvhen in closed po s ition, each door having arms rigid' therewith projecting beyond-the side edges there of and adjacent the free edge of the door; ott' a pair of brackets secured to fixed portions of the car opposite the ends of the line of meeting of the free edges of the door, each of said brackets having a central and two side arms projecting across. the side edges of the doors; a pair of lock levers pivotally mounted on said central arm of each bracket and adapted to swing under the respective projecting arms. fromv the doors; supporting` shelves on each of the side arms of eacli bracket upon which the free ends of the respective lock levers are adapted to rest wheninoperative position; and means i''or,v
