Be it known that I, Fnnnnruorr KOHNLE, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Dayton, in the county of li Iontgomery and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Price Tags, of which the following specification is a full disclosure.

My invention relates to labels, tickets or tags, and more particularly to that class which are used for marking goods wit-h prices for sale or with other data. necessary for their indentification, classification or other purpose.

An object of the invention relates to a price tag consisting of'two or more thicknesses of paper to form a unit duplex tag for manifolding the marking data, with the sections separablefrom one another.

Another object of the invention is to provide a duplex tag either in gang strip or individual form.

Another object of the invention is to provide a tag consisting of two or more thicknesses of paper secured together at one end, constituting a tag section provided with fastening means for securing the same to merchandise, and a ticket section detachable or separable from the tag section.

Another object of the invention is to in crease the utility of commercial types of tags composed of two or more thicknesses of paper without increasing the cost of manufacture.

Various other features of the invention will be more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, and'to methods and details of construction forming a part of this specification, in the drawings of which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, of which:

The tags preferably are manufactured in gang strip form as shown to possess all the characteristics of the gang tag strip disclosed in a prior patent issued to me August Specification of Letters Patent.

The tag disclosed is of that class which consists of two or more thicknesses of paper secured together by adhesive material and enclosing between them a cord or equivalent which projects from one end of 'the tag, in the form of a loop, as a fastener for securing the tag to the merchandise to be ticketed, for with my present improvement, the utility of such class of tag is materially enlarged without any increase to the cost of manufacture,

The tags are made in gang form as a strip of double ply and comprises a tape of paper, card or other equivalent or suitable material provided preferably over its whole surface, on one side with an adhesive coating and folded about a central transverse line upon itself to form two symmetrical hyers or plies 9.-3. The layers or plies 23 are adhesively secured together at the fold and free ends leaving the intermediate portion free. The tags comprised in the strip are individually identified and partially severed from one another by parallel slits or notches a cut into the strip laterally from the folded edge 1. The slits aside from partially sever ing the tags provide determinately' spaced shoulders at one edge, or along one margin of the strip adapted to cooperate with and be engaged by feeding devices of a marking machine for advancing the tag in step motions, a distance equal to the width of the tag between the notches, moving each tag to a position to print thereon the marking data. and a succeeding tag in relation to a cutter for severing it from the strip along a line continuous with the notch 4t separating it from its next succeeding tag. A cord 5 has its ends interposed and secured between the material. in the fold thereof with an intermediate loop of the cord drawn through an aperture along said folding line at the center of a tag width, forming a notch 6 in the folded edge of the tag.

The cord ends lie within the edge fold joining the two layers or plies and respectively at opposite sides of the notch 6, and, as the two layers are adhesively secured together at the cord holding end to a distance approximately corresponding to the depth of the notches in a finished strip, the ends of the cord are firmly bound within and permanently secured to the tag. One

layer 2 is scored or perforated. along a line 7 across its width and at the end of the adhesive union of the plies. The free portion of the layer, designated as a ticket section can be torn along the perforated line, from the other part, designated as a tag section. The ticket section as contemplated bearing the same marking data as the tag section for a manifold record thereof.

The lower or free edges of the section 2-3 as shown in Fig. 3 are united or ad h sively secured together for more efficiently holding the sections together as a unit in a flat condition, preventing the sect-ion from separating or spreading apart from one another, which may obstruct or interfere with the advance or feed of the strip through the marking machine, or section of a unit tag becoming accidentally torn from one another. 7

Several methods for marking the duplex or manifold tags may be practiced, one method being to pass the gang strip through the marking machine twice, printing on one face, then reversing and printing on the opposite face so that both the tag and ticket sections bear the same data. A second method is to provide the off or rear side on one section with a carbon coating so that when printing on its face side a manifold impression will be made on the other section. With the rear face of the ticket section covered with an adhesive coating, it may be secured. to a. record sales slip, after it has been torn from the tag section at the time the ticketed article is sold. The record ticket n'ovides a definite means with which the dealer can check up his sales and stock. Thus one section may remain 011 the goods when sold and the other section retained by the dealers as means for detecting errors or fraud.

While the tage is shown with a string fastenelg it is obvious that other types of fasteners may be employed to meet, the commercial requirement.

Thetag being formed of a plurality of layers can be made from a lightweight or thin paper stock and by adhesively uniting the layers at the head end of the tag a stiffened margin adaptable for rigidly an.- choring a fastener is provided.

Having described my invention, I claim:

1. An article of manufacture comprising a tape of paper having an adhesive coating on one side thereof, the tape longitudinally folded upon itself forming a plural layer strip, the strip at its fold edge provided with parallel transverse notches dividing the strip into a plurality of tags, the notches adapted for cooperation with feeding de vices, and the layers adhesively secured to gether along the longitudinal edges of the strip, the layers at the fold edge of the strip secured together a distance inwardly approximately corresponding to the depth or the notches, whereby each tag consists of a tag section having a plural-ply head portion and a one side gum coated ticket section severable from the tag section along a line at the end of the plural-ply head portion.

2. An article of manufacture comprising a tape of paper having an adhesive coating on one side thereof, the tape longitudinally folded upon itself forming a plural layer strip, the strip at its fold edge provided with parallel transverse notches dividing the strip into a plurality of tags, the notches adapted for cooperation with feeding devices, and the layers adhesively secured together along the longitudinal edges of the strip, thelayers at the fold edge of the strip secured together a distance inwardly approximately corresponding to the depth of the notches, whereby each tag consists of a tag section having a plural-ply head portion and a one side gum coated ticket section severable from the tag section along a line at the end of the pluralply head portion, and fastener means for each tag section secured in the head portion thereof.
