Be it known that 1, EMMA D. Banen, a citizen of the United States, residing 'at Nashville, in the county ot Davidson and State ott Tennessee, have invented newand useful Improvements in `Hair Curlers, of which the followingis a specification.

This invention. relates to hair curlers, and the primary object ot the same is to provide a device of this kind with a main member' having' a covering' of such character as to effectively grip the ends oi stubbly bobbed hair and hold the latter `lirmly when the remaiiiine` parts of the curler are pressed and secured against the hair thus retained. A further object of the invention is to provide a device ot the class set l'orth in the forni oit a clasp that can be held in the palm ofthe hand while rolling` the hair, with material advantages in expeditiously applying the hair to the curler in a. proper manner.

llTith these and other objects and advanin view, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

The numeral 5 designates the intermediate or `middle member having a covering' G of suitable soft material adapted to operateto eti'ectively hold the ends of the hair applied lthereto and the hair as wound thereon. This intermedia-te or middle member 5 is ilat `and straight and is continued at one end into a curved bend 7 'forming a. hollow terminal S that provides a spring action i'or a closing tongue 9 also continuous therewith and projectingr along one side of the intermediate or middle member 5 when the curler is properly shaped from the blanks shown by Figs. 6 and 7. The curved continuation or bend 7 between the intermedia-te or middle member 5 and the closing tongue 9 is formed with a vertical slot 10 opening outwardly through the upper edge thereof and extending; a distance inwardly tliereover suliicieiit to etl'ect aseeurement otthe :tree end of a clamping member 11, which is positioned on the side of the intermediate or middle member op posite that alone; which the tongue 9 entends. The curved wall 12 so shaped, or stands out beyond one side et the intermediate or middle ineinlier 5 such a distance as to properly space the member 11 'from the `member 5 for holding -the hair between the said members in a positive and reliable manner after the hair has `been wound upon or disposedaboiit the said intermediate or middle member and the tongue 9,aiid as a specific preferred arrange nient` the intermediate web 15 betweenthe slotsl and 1i is formed into an eye, and tl adjacent end ot' the clamping;l member 11 is slightly bent inwardly, as at 19, and is fiformed with upper and lower eyes and terior projection to catch upon the hair and which might interfere with the expeditious manipulation of the hair curler during the application and removal thereof. The free extremity of the clamping member ll has a vertical slot Q4 opening through the lower edge thereof and adapted to engage the slot l() in the hollow keeper bend or extremity 8, so as to lock the said clamping member closed, the operation being very simple and consisting in pulling upwardly on the member 11 a sn'l'licient distance to register the slot 24 with the slot l() and then releasing the clamping member 11, which locks itself in resuming its normal position. In releasing the member l1 the saine operation is pursued, that is, the said member is pulled upwardly to release it from the hollow keeper bend 8.

The improved hair curler is made from two blank parts shown by Figs. 6 and 7, and these parts may be quickly bent or assembled in shape to give the parts of the device the form and operative association hereinbefore described and as clearly shown by Fig. l. ln the operation of the improved hair curler, the closing tongue 9 and clamping member l1 are released and standoutwardly from the intermediate or middle member 5. rlhe ends of the hair are disposed or inserted between the intermediate member 5 and the tongue 9 and the latter is then closed and locked, to tightly clamp the hair ends and especially short ends. After the ends of the hair have thus been secured, the curler is rolled in the palm of the hand until the quantity of hair desired to be curled is applied around the intermediate member 5 and the tongue 9, and after the curler has been properly iilled, the clamping member ll will be closed and tightly secured against the hair thus wound about the intermediate member 5 and the tongue 9. After a certain period, the member l1. will be released from the hair and the curler will be unwound and the hair liberated there from by finally releasing the tongue 9, and it will be found that t-he hair so treated will be given a curled or wave-like form in accordance with the desires of the user.

It is proposed to make the improved hair curler of any suitable material h aving a neeessai-y amount of resiliency. rl`he several parts of the curler may be easily operated, and in the drawings the device is shown on a somewhat enlarged scale to clearly illustrate the several structural. features. It will be understood, however, that the curler will be of less dimensions than shown in praetice. It is also obvious that the several parts of the curler may be varied.

What is claimed as new is:

l. In a hair curler, a main intermediate member having' a ysuitable covering, and a closing tongue and clamping member respectively disposed on opposite sides of the intermediate member and respectively continued from one extremity of the latter. and hinged to the opposite extremity through the medium of terminal bends in the form of loops and hinged connecting devices.

2. A hair curler comprising an intermediate straight member having ay suitable covering with a looped bend continuing from one extremity thereof and terminating in a closing tongue, the opposite extremity of the intermediate member having a looped bend and a terminal keeper returned partially thereover for engagement by the end of the tongue, and a clamping member hinged to one of the terminal looped bends and having separable elasping engagement with the other bend.

ln a hair curler, an intermediate straight member having a suitable covering and forming the main support for the hair, said intermediate member being provided at opposite extremities with looped bends, one of the bends continuing into a tongue at one side of the intermediate member and the other bend having an extremity returned partially over the intermediate member to form a securing means for the tongue, and a clamping member hinged at one end to the looped bendA which is in part returned over the intermedia-te member and adapted to be closed parallel with the latter member, the free extremity of the clamping member and the looped extremity opposite that to which the clamping member is hinged being formed with interacting slots to serve as separable catch means for the clamping member.

A hair curler comprising an intermediate straight member having a suitable covering, the intermediate member having on one side a tongue formed continuous therewith through t-he medium of an end loop, the opposite extremity of the intermediate member also having a loop which is formed in part as a catch for the said tongue, and a clamping member having one end and a portion of the end looped member having the catch for the tongue provided with a hinge knuckle held intact by a pintle, the free extremity of the clamping member and the opposite loop having an interacting catch struct-ure for separably retaining the clamping member closed 'in relation to the intermediate member. i
