VALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1922.
valve may be readily opened and closed and to also provide a sealing member and seat with which it coacts in order that the longitudinal opening through the valve stem casing may be closed from the inside, while the valve remains open thereby permitting the' valvestem to be packed without having to close the valve and at the Sametime preventing any fluid entering the valve stein opening during the time the valve is openwhich overcomes the necessity of immediate attention to an imperfect packing.
Another object of the invention is to provide the valve stem with a yoke or housing for the head of the valve member and means t connecting said valve memberto the housing permitting` a limited movement of the valve member relative to said housing and the stem.
A further object of the invention is to so construct the parts of the valve that different forms oi interchangeable valve members may be used to meet the different conditions or the desires ol thensers, only one form bein shown.
LVith these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which Fig. 1, is a vertical sectional view of a valve made in accordance with my improvenient, portions of which aie shown in elevation and illustrating a metal cone or valve member in use therewith.
Fig. 2, is a section at the. line 2-2 ot Fig., 1.
4Fig. 3, is a section at the line 3-3 oi Fig. l
Fig. f1, is a bottom plan view of the rein the housing. l In carrying out my invention here embodied, 2 represents the valve body having the pipe connection openings 3 and i separated by a: partition having a valve seat 6 formed therewith, said valve seat having a flat surface 7 and anV inner beveled snriace 8 for coaction with the va lve member as will be more 'fully hereinafter described. v Above or in alignment with the valve seat is formed the opening 9 by means of the hub l0, the .latter being externally threaded ior the reception of the internally threaded en d oi' the valve stem casing 11. In the inner end of said casing" is formed a chamber 12 with which communicates the longitudinal stem opening 13 leading to the upper or outer ace'oi the casing and in this stem opening are formed the threads 14. Within thc casing 11 between the chamber l2 and the valve stem opening 13 is formed a seat 15 with which coacts the sealing member 1G formed with the threaded valve stem 17 and carrying the integral annular housing 18 open at its lower end and provided with internal threads 19 whereby the retaining ring 20, Fig. 4t, may be screwed into the open end ol" the housing for loosely retaining the valve member 21 in connection with said housing and through the latter witn the valve stem.
The valve member 21 comprises a metal cone 22 for coaction with the beveled portion 8 of the valve seat 6, a' body 2B formed of ribs producing a Maltese cross in cross section and a circular head 24, the latter being slightly smaller than the housing 18 so as to fit therein the same being held in place by the retaining ring 2O as hereinbeliore mentioned, which ring is provided with a numberof lugs 25 whereby it may be readily revolved for screwing it in or out of the housing. The head 24C has a threaded hole 24, so that the valve member may be conveniently tempotaining ring for holding the valve member rarily attached to the chuck of a lathe for finishing.
The upper or outer end of the valve stem casing 1l is externally threaded for the reception of the internally threaded cap 26 which with the outer end of the casing 11 forms a packing space 27 for the reception of any suitable packing substance for preventing leakage about the valve stem.
In the use of a valve of this character when the same is to be closed the valve stem is revolved by means of the hand wheel 28 Vor its equivalent attached to the outer end of the valve stem 17 which will move the valve cone 22 into engagement with its seat 8 and because of the shapes of these two cooperating parts any foreign substance that may happen to rest upon the valve seat will be forced therefrom during the closing action of the valve. After the valve cone 22 has engaged its seat the further rotation of the valve stem will bring the upper wall of the housing 18 into engagement with the upper face of the head 24 so that the necessary pressure may be exerted upon the valve member to cause it to snugly engage its seat without the valve member itself revolving or moving relative to the seat which will thus increase the life of the valve member seat. y
When the valve is open the valve stem may be moved outward a suiiicient distance to bring' the sealing member 16 into contact with the seat l5 which will etfectually close the communication between the body of the valve and the valve stem opening, thereby preventing any of the fluid passing through the Valve from entering the valve stem opening so that no leakage can occur at this point, and if it is desired to repack the valve stem the same may be done without interfering withl the fluid supply passing through the valve as will be obvious.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new' and useful is l. A valve comprising a valve body, a partition within said body, a valve seat formed wit-h said partition having a flat surface and a beveled inner surface, a valvestem casing detachably connected with said body, said casing having a chamber at its inner end and a longitudinal threaded valve stem opening therethrough communicating with said chamber, a seat formed in said casing between said chamber and the valve stem opening, a threaded valve stem mounted in the valve stem opening, a hand wheel on the outer end thereof, a sealing member formed with the inner end of said stem for coaction with said seat, an integral housing formed withsaid sealing member, a valve member comprising a valve cone, a body formed of radiating ribs and ahead, said head registering with the aforementioned housing, a retaining ring mounted in said housing for loosely maintaining the head of the valve member in said housing, and a cap on the outer end of the valve stem housing.
2. A valve including a valve seat and a seat for a sealing member in combination with a valve stem, a sealing member formed therewith for` coaction with the second named seat, a housing formed with said sealing member open at one end, a valvermemberl HARRY IVILHELMS.
