UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH F. SURRIDGE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PRESSED STEEL WHEEL AND METHOD OF PRODUCING THE SAME.
Application filed November 30, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that J OSEPH F. Summon, citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, has invented new and useful Imrovements in Pressed Steel Wheels and l ethod of Producing the Same, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a pressed steel wheel suitable for automobiles and similar vehicles under conditions in suring strength, efficiency and durability of the product with the minimum cost of production; and with this object in view the invention consists in a procedure of which a typical embodiment is indicated in the ac companying drawing, wherein;
Figure 1 is a side View,
Figure 2 is an edge View, and
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken diametrically of a wheel constructed in accordance with the improved method.
Figure 4 is a sectional view of blank for use in forming the web and rim of the proposed wheel.
Figures 5 and 6 are respectively side and sectional views of die members disposed in opposed relations preparatory to the operation of forming the hub, and showing the web blank and hub billet in operative relation.
Figure 7 is a sectional view similar to Figure 6 showing the die members and plungers in the position which they assume at the completion of the formation of the hub.
Figure 8 is a sectional view of die mem bers for forming the web, arranged in spaced relation with the blank and formed hub, the product of the preceding step in the method being arranged in operative relation there with.
Figure 9 is sectional view similar to Figure 8 with the die members in operative relation to produce the desired contour of Web and rim.
WVhereas modification in the shape of the web and rim may be produced by the method herein contemplated, the preferred contour is shown in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive which illustrate a wheel having a bowed web 10 and a rim 11 formed as a continuation or extension of the web and provided at its free edge with an outwardly directed flange 12 (the production of which, however, is optional and will depend upon the character and designed purpose of the wheel) and the Specification. of Letterslatent.

Serial No. 518,880.
hub 13 which is molded to engage and anchor the inner edge of the web and in the finished article forms therewith an integral construction.
In the production of this article it is pro posed to prepare a web blank 1 1 from a hat plate oi. suitable material (such as steel), with a central opening 15, the inner edge oi the blank bounding said opening being flanged or deflected as shown at 16, and in this connection to employ a billet 17 of suitable metal which arranged as indicated in Figures 5 and 6 in operative relation with the male and female die members 18 and 19 are heated to a welding temperature, the billet being disposed in the central opening of the web blank and of a volume suited to the size of the hub to be produced and which is defined by the mating cavities 20 and 21 in said die members. In connection with the die members there are employed the complemental cooperating plungers 22 and 23, so that when the die members are brought together as shown in Figure 7 and the plungers are moved by any suitable means to the positions indicated in said figure the metal forming the billet is forced into the form defined by the complemental rests 20 and 21 to embrace and incorporate the de flected. flange portions 16 of the web blank, it being understood that said flange portions are also heated to a welding temperature to combine with the materialo'f the billet.
Having proceeded so far the blank with the attached hub is in condition to be arranged in operative relation with the forming die shown in Figures 8 and 9 consisting of the male and female members 24 and 25 which when brought into cooperative relation by suitable hydraulic or other means produce the web and rim construction defined by the complemental faces thereo'l'.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is a 1. The method of producing an integral metallic wheel hub which consists in forming a circular blank with a central opening, placing a billet of metal in the said opening, the billet and the edge oi the blan surrounding the opening therein being heated to a welding temperature and then spreading and molding the billet to incorporate the edge of the blank bounding said opening.
2. The method of producing an integral metallic wheel hub which consists in forming a circular blank with a central opening, placing a billet of metal in the said opening the billet and the edge 01 the blank surrounding the opening therein being heated to a Welding temperature and then spreading and molding the billet to incorporate the edge of the blank bounding said opening and finally pressing the surrounding portion of the plate to form the Wheel Web and rim.
3. The method of producing an integral metallic Wheel hub which consists in forming a circular blank With a central opening deflecting the marginal edge of the opening from the plane of the blank, placing a billet of metal in the said opening, the billet and the edge of the blank surrounding the opening' therein being heated. to a Welding temperature and then spreading and molding the billet to incorporate the edge or the blank bounding said opening,
at. The method of producing an integral me- 20 tallic Wheel hub which consists in forming a circular blank With a central opening, deflecting the marginal edge of the opening from the plane of the blank, placing a billet of metal in said opening, and then finally spreading the billet in the presence of a Welding heat to incorporate the edge of? the blank bounding said opening.
5. A pressed metal Wheel consisting of a disk :tormed With a central opening having 30 the surrounding edge laterally deflected from the plane thereof, and a. hub of transversely expanded material in which the said deflected edge is: embedded and Welded.
In testimony whereof he affixes his sig- 35 nature.
