To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN'X/VALDIHEIM', a citizen of the United States, residing in Elizabeth, in the county ofUnion and State of New Jersey, have invented'certain new and useful Improvements in Combined" Typewriting and Computing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is illustrated as applied to a combined typewriting and computing machine which may be like-that shown in the application of Henry L; Pitman, No. 198,375, filed October 25, 1917 (now Patent No.1,- 350,387, dated August 24, 1920), in which a sub-carriage or cross-computer carriage is adapted to travel intermittently"with the typewriter carriage during the letter-feeding movements of the latter. In other words, the computer-carriage is picked up every time the carriage passes into a computing zone, and becomes released from the typewriter carriage as it passes out of the computing zone.
The typewriter carriageis sometimes re.
positioned in computing zone, for example when making corrections. When this is done under ordinary conditions, it is necessary to move the carriage back beyond the computing zone, in order to pick up the cross-computer carriage, andthen move the typewriter carriage forwardly to the de nominational positionin the computing zone.
In the Pitman; application above referred to, means is provided by which the crosscomputer'carriage may-be connected with the typewriter carriage by'means of a key in the beyboard after the typewriter carriage has beenmovedback into the computing zone.
. An object oi this invention is to provide means to'reconnect the cross-computer carriage or sub-carriage with the typewriter carriage by means actuated directly by the typewriter carriagewhen the latter is moved back intothe computing zone.

Numeral keys (not shown) swing typebars 10 upwardly and rearwardly to cause types 11 to strike against the front side of a platen 12 (Figure 6) rotatively supported on a carriage 13. The carriage is urged in a letter-feeding direction by a spring-drum 14: (Figure 1) connected to said carriage by a strap 15. The lettertfeeding movements of the carriage may be controlled by escape ment devices (not shown), which may be like those used in the Underwood machine.
The carriage may be rapidly positioned denominationally in any one of a plurality of columns by key-actuated denominational stops 16 (Figures l and 6), which are adapted to release the carriage and engage with column-stops 17 to arrest the carriage in the proper position.
The numeral keys are adapted to actuate a master wheel 18 through various distances, the extent of rotation being proportional to the values of the numeral keys. Column-totalizers 20 are adjustably supported on a bar 21 mounted to travel on a fixed rail or guide bar 22 and with the carriage, so that, as the carriage passes through a computing zone, computing wheels 23 are brought seriatim into effective relation with the master wheel. 18. The column-totalizers 20 may be adjusted in positions corresponding with the positions of the column-stops 17, so that any one of them may be rapidly positioned relatively to the master wheel by the denominational stops 16.
A cross-totalizer 2 1- is provided so that computation may be had crosswise of the various columns. The cross-totalizer is adapted to travel intermittently with the carriage (in a manner which. will be pres ently described) to bring computing wheels 25 seriatim into effective relation with a master wheel 26. The master wheel 26, for the cross-totalizer 24:, may be connected with the master wheel 18 for the column-totalizers, so as to rotate in unison therewith. For this purpose,the master wheel 18 is connected with a horizontal shaft 27, which drives a vertical shaft 28 through a pair of bevel gears 30 and 31. The vertical shaft 28 in turn drives a horizontal shaft 32 through bevel gears 83 and 34, the horizontal. shaft being connected with the master wheel 20. The cross-totalizer is supported on a traveling bar or cross-computer carriage 35 guided on a fixed rail or guide bar 36.
To cause the cross-totalizer 24 to travel intermittently with the typewriter carriage 13, there is set at each column-stop 17 a pickup element u. As the carriage enters the computing zone, the nearest pick-up element engages with a hook 38 on a piclcup bar 39 pivotally connected at 10 to a rack 11, to move the latter rightwardly (Figure 1). The rack actuates a double sector member 412 to rotate the pinion 4:3 secured to a shaft tt extending from the back: to the front of the machine (Figure 6), where it is provided with another pinion d5 engaging with a rack 4L6 on the cross-computer carriage to move the latter step by step relatively to the master wheel 26 as the numbers are typed while the carriage 18 is in the computing zone. As the carriage passes out of the computing zone, the pick-up bar becomes released from the pick-up element by a pin 4:? on the pick up bar 39, which enga es a cam L8, on a fixed plate 50. The picleup bar is swung about its pivot 4-0, thus freeing the hook 238 of the pick-up element and permitting the pick-up bar 35) to be restored to its normal position (Figure 2) by a return spring 51 coiled about the shaft t l, which connects the double sector member 42 with the rack 46 on the cross computer carriage. Thus, the spring 51 also returns the cross-totalizer 24k to its normal position at the right of the master wheel 26. The hook 38 on the pickup bar may he held in the path of the pickup elements 3? by a spring-controlled lever, 52, l'iavingz a stud 53 thereon bearing againstthe under side of the pick-up bar 39.
The columnstops 1.7 and the pickup ele ments 3?, of which there may be one of each for each letter-space position, may be sel.ec tively set by a key in the keyboard, as in the Pitman application above referred to, and may he held in their ineffective and effective positions by detcnts 5 1 and 55.
To reposition the eross-totalizer relatively to the master wheel and reconnect it with the typewriter carriage when the latter is moved back into the computing zone, the piclcup elements 37 are adapted to engage a cam 56 (Figure 2) on a cam member 57,

In a combined typewriting and computing n achii a, the combination of a letter-- ileediusr carriage, a computer carriage, adjustable devices on the letter-feeding carriage, means engagcable by said devices to cause the computer carriage to travel intern'zittently with the letter-feeding carriage through a computing; zone, means engageable by said devices when the letter-feeding "-arriage is backed into the computing; zone to reconnect said computer carriage with said. lettericedinp' carriage, and. a controlling; device cnogageable by said adjustable devices to render the second-mentioned means inei'lective when the letterdeeding carriage is backed beyond the computing zone.

In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination. of a letterieedinp; carriage, a plurality of totalizers to travel with said carriage through a comput lug zone, a cross-totalizer adapted to be connected to travel. intermittently with said carriage through the computing zone, means to release said. last-named totalizer when the carriage passes out of the computing zone, means to reconnect said totalizer with the carriage when the latter is moved back into the computing zone, and means to render said reconnecting means ineffective when the carriage is backed beyond said computing zone.
9. In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination of a letterfeedinp; carriage, pick-up devices to travel with said carriage, a computer carriage adapted to be picked up by said devices, so
as to cause the computer carriaye to travel intermittently with said letterdieeding carriage through a computing zone, means to release the computer carriage when the lettor-feeding carriage passes out oi the com puting zone, means to reconnect said computer ca1.i.'iagc with the carriage when the latter is moved back into the on'1putix'i; g zone, and a shifter to render the reconnect inn, means ineffective when the cmriage is moved. beyond the computing zone.

In. combined typewriting and com puting; machine, the combination oi? a letter feeding carriage, pick-up devices to travel with said carriage, a computer carriage adapted to be picked up by said device-1, so as to cause the computer carriage to travel intermittently with said letterateedinn; carriage through a computing zone, means to release the computer carriage when the letter-feeding carria e passes out of the computing zone, means to reconnect said com puter carriage with the carriage when the latter is moved back into the computing; zone, and a shifter to render the reconnecting means inefi ectivo when the carriage is moved back beyond the computing zone, so that the devices may pass the reconnecting means without actuating the same, the nearest device being effective to actuate the shifter when the letter-feeding carriage is again moved in a letter 'leed direction, so as to render the reconnecting means effective.

In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination of a letterfeeding carriage, pick-up devices to travel with said carriage through a computing zone, a computer carriage adapted to be picked up by said devices, so as to cause the computer carriage to travel intermittently with said letter-feeding carriage through the computing zone, means to release the computer carriage when the letter-feeding carriage passes out of the computing zone, a pivoted lever, means connecting said pivoted lever with said computer carriage, a member on said lever to be engaged by any one of said devices to reconnect the computer carriage with the letter-feeding carriage when the latter is bae red into the computing zone.

In a combined. typewriting and computing machine, the combination of a letter feeding carriage, pick-up devices to travel with said carriage, a computer carriage adapted to be picked up by said devices, so as to cause the computer carriage to travel. intermittently with said letter-feeding carriage through a computing zone, means to release the computer carriage when the letter-feeding carriage passes out of the computing zone, a pivoted lever, a member on said lever, means connecting said pivoted lever with said computer carriage, and a shifter on said lever, said shifter being connected With the member on said lever, said shifter being adapted to be engaged by said devices to render said member ineii'ective when the letterdeeding carriage is backed beyond the zone.

In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination of a letterfeeding carriage, a totalizer, devices on said carriage to cause said totalizer to travel intermittently with said carriage, means comprising an element in the path of said de vices to be engaged by said devices to reconnect the totalizer with the carriage when the,
i'iage adapted to move in a letter-teed direction, a plurality of totalizers to travel with said carriage through a computing zone, a cross-totalizer adapted to be connected to travel with said carriage at various intervals through the computing zone, means to release said cross-totalizer when the carriage passes out of the computing zone, means to reconnect said cross-totalizer with the carriage when the latter is moved back into the computing zone, means to rendersaid reconnecting means ineffective when the carriage is backed beyond said computing zone, and means to render said reconnccting means etl'ective when the carriage is again moved. in a letter-feed direction into the computing zone.

In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination of a can riage, a totalizer, devices on said carriage to cause said totalizer to travel intermittently with said carriage, and means comprising an element in the path of said devices to be engaged by said devices to reconnect the totalizer with the carriage when the carriage is moved back into a computing zone, said element being so constructed that said devices may move idly past said element when the carriage is movedv in letter-teed direction.

In a combined. typewriting and computing machine, the combination of a carriage. a totalizer, devices on said carriage to cause said totalizer to travel intermittently with said carriage, means comprising" an element in the path of said devices to be en gaged by said devices to reconnect the totalizer with the carriage when the carriage is moved back into a computing zone, and a cam on said element with which said devices may engage to swing said element, so that said devices may move idly past said element when the carriage is moved in a letterfeed direction.
17. The combination of a main carriage to travel forwardly in a letter-teed direction, a sub-carriage to travel with said main carriage, means to release said sub-carriage at predetermined positions in the travel of said main carriage, and means actuable by said main carriag to move said sub-carriage and reconnect it with the main carriage when the latter is moved in a reverse letter-teed direction.

The combination with a main carriage which may carry a Work-sheet, means to determine zones on the work-sheet, and typing devices to type in such zones on the worksheet, ot' a sub-carriage to be connected to travel with said main carriage while any one of the zones is traveling past the printingpoint, means to release said sub-carriage when the main carriage is ted sufiiciently to carry a zone on the work-sheet past the printing point of the typing devices, and means actuable by said main carriage to reconnect said sub-carriage with the maiir ning of a new line.

In a combined typewriting and computing machine, in combination, a letterieeding carriage, a computing carriage adapted to be connected to said letter-teeding carriage to travel therewith through a computing zone, means to release said computing carriage when the letter-feeding carriage passes out of the computing zone, and means, actuable by the letter-feeding carriage, whereby, upon movement of the latter back into the computing zone, said computer carriage will be reconnected with the letter-feeding carriage.

In a combined typewriting and computing machine, in combination, a letterifeeding carriage, a cross-computer unit having an element to be connected to travel with said carriage through a computing zone and a co-operative element, means to release the traveling cr0ss-computing element when the carria e passes out of the computing zone, and means actuable by the letter-feeding carriage whereby movement of the latter back into the computing zone will cause the traveling cross-computing element to be reconnected with the carriage.
